THESIS STATEMENT: Your essay must have a purpose beyond simply summarizing the story. You must apply/discuss at least one literary term and use that term to expose or reveal an important element or revelation in the story. ***Please include the story title and author in your thesis statement.
Example: In Doris Lessing’s rite of passage story “Through the Tunnel,” the two beaches symbolize different stages in an individual’s life, while the tunnel between represents the fears and challenges presented by the journey from one phase of life to another. These symbols function to expose one theme of the story; that growth, while rewarding, often requires risk and pain, and doesn’t always yield the promised ideal.

EVIDENCE: Briefly summarize examples from the story(ies) that you plan to use to support your thesis statement. Even better, include direct passages/quotes from the story(ies) that you plan to analyze in your argument.
1. The first beach represents childhood. It is safe, familiar, and his mother is present. There is also repeated reference to the color white, which is often associated with innocence. Like Jerry, children often become bored with childhood and the rules and safety measures it presents. So many people spend most of their youth desperately pining for the day they become adults.
2. The other beach represents adulthood. Jerry longs to join the older boys on this beach as he watches from afar, but once he gets there, the enchantment immediately wears off. He’s tired and wants nothing more than to “get back home and lie down” (383). This is much like a young adult’s reaction to finally “getting to” face the responsibilities of being independent. Such independence looks so idyllic from afar, but a closer look reveals such freedom’s unexpected burdens and resulting disillusionment.
3. The underwater tunnel that Jerry must navigate from the first beach to the beach of “adulthood” is treacherous, and the journey through the tunnel is traumatic for Jerry. Generally, the tunnel represents any journey that one must take to pass from one stage of life to another; more specifically, it symbolizes adolescence. At times in the tunnel, Jerry feels suffocated, as if he’s going to die. He’s battered against rocks and is filled with panic. At others, he feels victorious and invincible. Adolescence is full of similar ups and downs; why else would it be compared so frequently to a roller coaster ride?
