And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.ReaderThe Word of the Lord. PeopleThanks be to God. Closing VoluntaryCarillon Sortie Henri MuletAbout Christ Church Eureka95256540500In November 1868, Anglican lumberman Thomas Walsh wrote to the Humboldt Times, saying that he proposed erecting “an Episcopal Church in Eureka called Christ Church” since he understood Christ to be the “Door to Heaven.” The next year, after William Carson deeded a lot to the vestry, the church was built in downtown Eureka on 4th and E Street. When the vestry asked Bishop William Ingraham Kip for a rector, he responded, “I would be happy to comply with your request if you would but tell me where Eureka is located.” Happily, the Rev. John Gierlow found his way to Eureka and became the parish’s first rector, holding the first service on May 22, 1870. Bishop Kip then consecrated the new church on February 5, 1871. In 1938, because of an encroaching marsh and noisy trolley traffic, the church broke ground for a new building at its present location on 15th and H Streets. Over the years, the church has grown, thanks to the generosity of donors such as William Carson and William Smullin and the leadership of many beloved rectors such as the Rev.’s J. Thomas Lewis, John L. Thompson, and W. Douglas Thompson. This year, the church celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the dedication of the custom-designed Kegg organ and, of course, the arrival of our new rector, Father Daniel London. As we approach our 150th anniversary, we look forward to the many ways that we will continue to fulfill the 150-year-old vision for Christ Church to be an ever more welcoming and open “Door to Heaven.”About St. Anselm of Canterbury95254508500Anselm lived in an age when ignorance and raw power often went hand in hand. His life was spent in opposing these enslaving forces, especially in England. He was born of noble Christian parents in Burgundy and educated at the monasteries at St. Leger and Bec in Normandy. He joined the latter community and, after an impressive career as teacher and author, became its abbot. He first visited England at the invitation of William the Conqueror, by whom he was well-loved. His consecration as Archbishop of Canterbury met with overwhelming approval from the English people, who knew him as a wise and compassionate person. He spent years in this high office attempting to gain a lasting peace in a time of constant feuding. He championed the church’s independence from royal authority and was twice exiled by angry kings whose bidding he refused to do. Anslem was a theologian of the first order. He lectured in Rome, carried on intellectual correspondence with the most brilliant leaders of his day, and wrote a number of books that are still highly regarded among theologians. His most famous book,?Cur Deus Homo,?was the foremost work on the doctrine of the atonement to come out of the Middle Ages. 952527368500About the Rev. Daniel London, PhDDaniel earned his Bachelor of Arts in English and Religious Studies from Westmont College in Santa Barbara in 2005 and his Master of Arts in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2008, while working as a manager at a Borders bookstore and a Youth Minister at Church of Our Saviour in San Gabriel, CA. After receiving his Certificate of Anglican Studies from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, he was ordained to the transitional diaconate by the Right Rev. J. Jon Bruno on June 8, 2013 and then to the priesthood by the Right Rev. Mary Glasspool on January 11, 2014 at St. John’s Cathedral in Los Angeles. He earned his PhD in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, where he has taught courses on Ethics, Church History, Mysticism, and the Gospel of John. He has previously served as the Director of the Marin Episcopal Youth Group, Curate at Christ Episcopal Church in Sausalito, Assisting Priest at St. Mark’s in Crockett and Priest-in-Charge at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in San Rafael. On May 20, 2016, Daniel married Dr. Ashley Bacchi at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. ................
