WG Nordic Events 2004-2005 * Respect The Snow Gods

Fall Weekend Trail Help ** count on every November sat/sun-Bridge building, glade cleaning, ditch digging, downfall and overall tuning of the trails. Efforts are usually generously compensated and simply email us about your plans; this has become quite the warm rewarding tradition.

December 4-5 23rd Annual Jack Frost Celebration Count on a big turn out of winter lovers as we open up the season in honor of one our favorite snowy characters. Trail work, the celebration, and Sunday brunch with adventure tours round out the weekend. Bring a dish to share Saturday eve and we will provide the refreshments. The last two years has seen successful results on the snowfall amounts as a direct result of this gathering.

Dec 18 West Va Special Olympics Coaches Training We host this crew that get kids out skiing that normally would never have a chance.

Dec 26 Gateway To The Refuge: Canaan Valley-An Eastern Climate Anomaly 10 am Join us on a series of free snowshoe tours that highlight the ecological diversity of our nation’s 500th refuge. Canaan Valley can have frost every month of the year and averages 44 degrees mean annual temperature along with a 75” rain/snow year in 2003.

Jan 2 2005 Care Free Snowshoe Tour 1 pm We will roam along Freeland Run and other nearby parts of the Refuge. These events are free and include snowshoes.

Jan 8 Annual XC Ski Fest Day Free lessons and half priced rentals to all first time interested skiers that want to try the dang stuff. We just may give it all away on this day.

Jan 8 BB Biathlon 3 pm line up sprint stop aim fire keep goin’ in whole yearlong series.

Jan 9 Gateway To The Refuge: Winter Wildlife Projects - A walk/ski to the endangered northern flying squirrel habitat on the Refuge, introduction to the squirrel tracking research and radio telemetry that we are doing to study the habitat use and home range of the squirrel in winter.

Jan 16 Carefree Snowshoe Tour 1pm Your chance to appreciate the simple beauty of snowshoeing. Natural history and local lore are featured.

Jan 17 Refuge Birdwalk with Casey Rucker: start at the refuge office at 8am and delight yourself to the diversity and his wonderful company.

Jan 22 Kids Clinic 11am-3 pm Let our crew take them away, lunch, instruction, tours, games and mostly good ol’ski fun.

Jan 22 BB Biathlon 3 pm Our shovels are already set up to ping along this wooded course. All ages are welcome. Young children should be assisted by an adult.

Jan 22-23 NATO Telemark Workshop 8amVermont’s Dick Hall and staff come to WG with down to earth telemark instruction. This course will likely leave you with a new bright direction in your winter xc skiing.

Jan 23 Gateway To The Refuge: Why the Balsam, Snowshoe Hare, and Northern Flying Squirrel 10 am Discover the special nature of our high, windy, wet, and cold mountain climate. Join a team of naturalists in search of the clues. These 10am Sunday walks are free of charge and offered each year to expand our appreciation of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge.

Jan 26-28 West Virginia Special Olympics Winter Games Gathered are racers from three states, parents, coaches, volunteers, and helpers. This event will give back tenfold what is put in. We plan to support this event year after year.

Jan 29 Women’s Winter Ski Day 8 am Even with or without fresh snow there is crisp mountain air and lots to learn. Ease into it with a total beginner course or face the challenge of a more advanced day that covers skating and telemarking.

Jan 30 5 Km Snowshoe Walk/Run 1 pm Well known Helvetia,WV distance runner Dan Lehman will charge this one up. Features an easy rolling course with some hills and many prizes and classes. We hope to attract longing-for-spring runners on this event.

Feb 2 Ground Hog's Day Ski 9am Our annual trek in search for clues to the rest of winter never seems to end. Full day backcountry journeys usually have no route in mind and end up a little lost.

Feb 4 Dream XC Clinic with Randy French 8 am Our own private ski party with the flat track guru of groove who’s track record here is ace 1000%. If you are leaning toward being even close to an intermediate this is your chance to shine. $50/day

Feb 5-6 National Ski Patrol Nordic Skier Enhancement Seminar: The annual On Snow Refresher to sharpen skills in compass reading, toboggan handling, and XC skiing.

Feb 5-6 PSIA Learn To Classic/Freestyle Clinic 8 am Randy will again lead skiers along a smooth course toward skiing perfection. $90 2 days or $60 for one. This counts as a level one course for skiers needing upgrades or PSIA membership. Well worth it.

Feb 12-14 NATO Telemark Adventure Tour 8 am Join in guided instructional tours into the Dolly Sods with Vermont’s well known Dick Hall. Plenty of technique secrets from the guy who has been on the job ski teaching for well over 2 decades.

Feb 13 25K Mountain State Marathon 1 pm This rolling course never gives you all the way up or settle for an even shortened version. Kid’s classes, and great prizes. $15 entry fee. Fully groomed for classic or skate, race in the white grass style.

Feb 13 BB Biathlon 3 pm get your sites tuned in for these shootout ski treks

Feb 13 CareFree Snowshoe Tour 1pm Fascinating, filled with natural history and local lore.

Feb 19 Women’s Winter Ski Day 8am Ease into it with a total beginner course or face the challenge of a more advanced day that covers skating and telemarking.

Feb 26 Kids Clinic 11 am-3pm We’ve had a huge success getting all these aspiring young skiers united in the last few years.

Feb 26 BB Biathlon 3 pm 3 targets in 3 shots as fast and accurate as you can go

Feb 20 Gateway To The Refuge: Winter Tracking 10 am Now you have an excuse for staring at the ground, we have the snowshoes, guides, and the critters are trained on some trips.

Full Moon Skiing Trips will focus around each month’s lunar glare Dec 26, Jan25, Feb 24, Mar 25. We usually head out around 7:30 pm and all skiers should have one of these trips under their Nordic belts, there is a special magic to skiing at night.

Canaan Valley Hash House Harriers: Dates and locations to be announced for this winter’s series. A ski hash is a game based on the English game of hares and hounds. Hares set the course using hash marks and hounds attempt to follow. Huge success in 2004.
