Direct to Reported Speech.

We can report what somebody says without needing to use speech marks. For example,

“I want to be a hero!” announced Ruskin.

becomes

Ruskin announced that he wanted to be a hero.

Notice these things:

1. You have to write reported speech in the past tense.

2. The word that is important.

“I like your tie!” commented Hamza.

Hamza commented that he liked my tie.

Now change these;

1. “This work is easy!” exclaimed Zia.

2. “I want to go home,” pleaded Mr Staiger.

3. “It’s playtime,” announced Ms Foley.

4. “I know the answered,” Samantha whispered to Alisha.

5. “I want children to work hard,” demanded the strict teacher.

6. “I’m too tired to carry on,” complained Arsalan.

Now create some of your own

Last week, we changed direct speech.

This week, our objective is to change reported speech to direct speech.

For example,

Zia said that the work was fun.

becomes

“This work is fun,” said Zia

1. Minael whispered that the work was easy.

2. Ishaaq complained that he wanted to go home.

3. Alisha said that Aman was a good cricketer.

4. Samantha whispered to Shardell that she loved the work.

5. Mr Swollam announced that he was retiring.

6. The news reader announced that the River Trent had flooded.

7. The drowning girl screamed for help.

8. Rimshah pleaded with the referee not to send her off.

9. The anxious new child asked where her teacher was.

10. Ms Yelof told her class to enjoy their work.

Mr Regiats quietly asked the class to get on with their work.

Notice that the last example uses an adverb. Can you write a reported speech sentence similar to the one above (using an adverb).
