Essay 1: Literacy NarrativeTimetable:Assignment:Worth:Due Date:Proposal1%Peer Editing Workshop3%Final Draft, 4+ page10%Topic:English 1A is a course designed to equip you with the resources needed to use written communication across a variety of academic contexts to successfully express your ideas and make convincing arguments. Thus, we will be learning about academic English this semester, but what exactly is “academic English”? How does this differ from the ways you write, speak, and text with friends and family? For this assignment, you will choose two different codes that you use in your life and write about how you employ them in different contexts for a variety of purposes. Structure:This essay will be structured in four sections:1) In your first paragraph, introduce two different “codes” you use in writing and speaking. End this paragraph with an argumentative statement (your thesis statement) about how these codes operate in your life.2) In your next two paragraphs (or more), describe each of these codes (devote at least a paragraph to each code). Be specific in your description of each one, and explain why that “code” is appropriate for a particular occasion or audience. Provide actual examples of each “code” and use vivid detail to help capture the importance of the example.3) For the rest of your paper (expect your conclusion), consider what would happen if you used one of your “codes” in a setting more appropriate to another—what would the consequences be? How do your different audiences respond to your “codes”? Include specific examples including dialogue. Why do you use these “codes”?4) For your final paragraph, summarize your thesis and your main points, but do not cut and paste your own writing. Leave your reader with a final thought. Research Requirements:You may not use outside sources. This essay is asking you to consider how you tailor your own language to suit particular audiences and contexts; thus, the examples should come from your own life, and you should reflect on how and why you communicate the ways you do.Tips for writing a successful Literacy Narrative:Skip a broad introduction; instead, start with the two codes you will focus on for the rest of your paper. End your first paragraph with a clearly stated thesis statement; this thesis statement will explain the importance of each code and what each accomplishes. For example:While I use ______________ in situations such as _____________ because this code allows me to ________________, _________________, and _____________________, when I am in situations such as ________________________, I use ____________________________ as __________________________.You may write about yourself right now or a younger self, but write in first person—this is meant to be a reflexive paper that asks you to think critically about the different codes you use.Remember though, this is an academic paper, so you need to use formal diction and syntax—you need to use an academic “code.”Your paper must be formatted using proper MLA formatting rules.
