WADE HAMPTON GOLF CLUB, CASHIERS, NC GENERAL MANAGER/COO

The Wade Hampton Golf Club (WHGC) is a national golf club with a close knit, socially compatible membership who are avid golfers with a deep love of the game and whose centerpiece is one of the best, most enjoyable golf courses in the world. WHGC was designed and is maintained for those who appreciate exceptional quality golf. The course, at an elevation of 3,650 ft., is named for General Wade Hampton III, a popular and respected gentleman who distinguished himself during the War Between the States and was eventually named Governor of South Carolina. Members refer to the Wade Hampton Golf Course as “Tom Fazio’s Masterpiece”. It was recognized as the “Best New Private Course for 1987” by Golf Digest magazine, and is one of only three courses built in the last fifty years to be currently ranked in their top 20 courses in the United States. Golfweek magazine has also recognized the course as the “America’s Best Residential Golf Course”. The club provides an unparalleled golf experience and an environment and offerings for superior social camaraderie. The club’s mission is to provide camaraderous and congenial membership with exceptional golf and social experiences centered around a superb golf course, comfortable clubhouse facilities and a top notch, membership focused staff.

The GM/COO will inherit an outstanding staff, many of which are long tenured, who deliver an outstanding level of service to the membership, and the Club is recognized as performing at a very high level. The current GM/COO has been with the Club for ten years and has announced his desire to move to a new opportunity. The Board’s desire is for a confident, visionary leader with a naturally sincere and visibly engaged style who is able to lead the Club through a planned transition to a more casual, but superior service-focused environment, while maintaining and enhancing its significant reputation, both in the Southeast, and as one of the great club communities of the U.S. The Club is seeking a consummate professional with proven superior team leadership/development, consensus-building and execution skills. Candidates with 5-7 years of verifiable general management experience in a progressively upward career tracking in similar ‘golf-centric’ environments with consistent, unblemished tenures will be considered, as will experienced current AGMs with strong support from a recognized and capable GM ‘mentor’. Proven ability to effectively communicate, both in written and verbal forms, with all constituencies is critical, as is a desire for someone with a ‘service heart’ and strong ‘gentility’ roots and style. Financial acumen and strong organizational/delegatory skills are hugely important, as is an exceptionally respectful manner and natural style. WHGC is a highly seasonal operation where strong staff recruitment and training skills are necessary, as is the ability to provide annual innovations and creative member activities. Strong food and beverage skills and a ‘get it done’ attitude are critical to continuing the traditions of this position. The ideal candidate will have an understanding and appreciation for the traditions of the game of golf. A college degree and CCM designation are preferred. The Club recently added a new position of Membership Relations Director who, in conjunction and with direction from the GM/COO, will help the Club to more actively develop prospective member opportunities while the Club maintains its ‘by invitation only’ nature. Effectively managing member expectations and ‘change’ over the next few years will be a top priority of the new GM/COO.

Embracing of the western Carolina mountain lifestyle and living in a small town environment is critically important to the long term success and satisfaction of the chosen candidate.

Salary: Open and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Club, along with the typical CMAA benefits, offers an excellent bonus and benefit package.
