Exercise: Distinguishing Facts, False Statements of Fact, and Opinions

A statement of fact expresses only what actually happened or what could be proven true by objective data.

Example:

On Sunday, February 6, 2010, the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl.

A false statement of fact expresses an untrue account of what happened or what could be proven untrue by objective data.

Example:

On Sunday, February 6, 2010, the Pittsburg Steelers won the Super Bowl.

A statement of opinion expresses an attitude toward something – it makes a judgment, provides a view, or suggests a conclusion. (Although an opinion cannot be proven true or false, it can be supported with evidence.)

Example:

The Green Bay Packers are a better football team than the Pittsburg Steelers.
