Biography of Diego Rivera

1886-1957

Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato, Mexico on December 8th 1886. During his in elementary school, Diego began to enjoy the art of drawing. His parents decided to move to Mexico City when little Diego was only ten-years-old. In this city Diego began to attend the school of Bellas Artes, most commonly known as the Fine Arts School.

Diego Rivera was a very important person because he was the first muralist in Mexico. His art describes a lot of the Mexican culture as well as the Aztecs and Mayan background. He has a variety of works of art. For example pencil drawings, murals, book illustrations, and political writings. Diego used bright colors to describe Mexican people and their culture as well as their way of life. Through his murals, Diego contributed a lot to Mexican art and history.

Diego Rivera’s first exposition was such a success that the Mexican government decided to give him money to help him continue his studies in Europe. He learned about other kinds of art such as cubism. In 1910 he exhibited forty works in Mexico. The main goal of Diego was to describe the Mexican Revolution in his woks of art. The murals that he exhibited in Mexico made him tremendously famous that he became a leader of a pictoric movement and also a political leader. In 1930 Diego was showing works in New York. Diego loved to work using the fresco technique.

He married four times. He had one son with his first wife, two daughters with his second wife and a daughter with his forth wife. His third wife was one of the most important and famous Mexican painters, Frida Kahlo. They were married for ten years. They did not have any children. Diego Rivera died on November 24, 1957 in Mexico City.
