Albert Namatjira was born in Hermannsburgin Christian Mission near Alice Springs, on 28th July 1902. He was a full-blooded aborigine. He went to primary school at the mission but when he was 13 years old he was initiated into the Aranta tribe.

He started making souvenirs to sell to make money for the mission. These souvenirs were made of wood with aboriginal designs burnt into them. He was very good at his work and this was the first sign of his artistic talents.

He became an artist and his paintings show the country of his birth, the country of his people, the Dreamtime land of the legends and creation stories. He was a very popular artist and his painting still sell for a lot of money.

In 1957 he became the first aborigine to become an Australian citizen.

He died on the 8th of August, 1959, and was buried in the Alice Springs cemetery. He was 57 years old and had been painting for 44 years and everyone was sad to hear of his death.
