Exploring Paris – Francais Today, you will be visiting Paris! With the help of the Internet, you will plan a trip to Paris. After your “visit”, you will create a story about your trip to Paris and of the monument you visited on your first day in Paris. To do this, you will need to use the internet to research your monument online and find specific information. We will be in the library for the next three days to work on this project, if you are not finished you will have to complete the assignment on your own time it is due November 6, 2017. Bon voyage! BackgroundParis is the capital of France, and a cultural and economic center that has a rich history. For hundreds of years, a monarchy of kings and queens ruled France. During the French Revolution in 1789, the monarchy was overthrown, and France became a republic, or democratic government. Well-known landmarks in Paris include the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Paris, today, is a beautiful, historic city that is a top touristic destination not only because of its monuments, but also for its fine food, parks, luxurious boutiques, and museums. The Project You will choose a monument from the list below. Everyone signs up for just one monument (some of you will have to double up). Your task will be to imagine you are visiting your famous landmark so you can create a story from it. You are going to become an expert on your monument and present your information to the class. These are the possibilities:Louvre (museum/old palace of the kings) Eiffel TowerCathedral of Notre DameArc de TriompheH?tel des Invalides (Napoleon’s tomb)Sacré-Coeur (church)Panthéon (church and crypts)Gare d'Orsay (old train station and great museum)Pompidou Centre (museum)Catacombs (creepy underground burial place!)La Conciergerie (prison during Revolution)Sainte Chapelle (church)Tuillerie Gardens (Jardins des Tuilleries) + Arc du CarouselLa Cimetière du Père Lachaise (cemetery)Le Quartier Latin La Sorbonne (university neighborhood)Champs Elysees (famous avenue)La Madeleine (Sainte Genevieve)The Pyramid in front of the Louvre (by Pei)La Défense and Arche de la Defense (neighborhood)Garnier Opera House Ch?teau de Versailles (not in Paris, but a major destination!)Travel details: Find a round trip flight from Vancouver to Paris.Answer the following questions:What airline will you fly?How long is the flight? Can you fly non-stop?How much does your ticket cost?To find a hotel, go to and choose a hotel that you like. You can see pictures of the hotel’s exterior and interior to help you make a choice. Don’t spend too much time on hotels because you have to carry on with your other research.Answer the following questions here:What is the name of your hotel? How much is it for a room in your hotel for your 1 week stay? What is your hotel near? Now you are ready to research your Paris landmark. As you research information, you should also collect images. Try to print out or sketch images that show different views rather than choosing just one. You may even see your landmark beautifully lit up at night. You should answer following information as you read:What is it?When was it built? What is it made of? Who built it?What problem did it solve or what purpose did it serve? Are there famous people associated with it?What do you think it would be like to visit? What might be the most interesting or impressive details? Now you have your research done and you are ready to create your story! We will be using Storybird to write stories or poetry using beautiful artwork as inspiration. Here’s how to access Storybird. (If you already have a username and password, skip to step 5)1. Go to . Click ‘Sign up’.3. Choose STUDENT.4. Choose a username and password.5. Navigate to ‘CLASS’ and enter class code: HHMBB. (All the classes will be able to read your book)6. Record your username and password here:Username: Password:There are a few key elements that I want to see in your story besides the monument, flight details and hotel. I want you to add some sort of medical emergency element. What went wrong and how did you fix it? EX) Did someone fall and break their leg? Did they go to the doctor to get a cast? Or did you get lost and need to ask for directions? How did you do that? Also, I would like you to tell me what you would do differently on your next trip to Paris. Would you stay somewhere different or use a different airline? How would you change your trip? How you will be graded:-As this is a written project I will use the Writing Rubric. I have included it in your package. You can also find it on Edmodo in the Libraries section.Achievement Level DescriptorIThe student does not reach a standard described by any of the descriptors given belowC-Student experiences difficulty conveying a message using past/present/future tenses. The student uses a limited range of safe vocabulary and grammatical structures and there are frequent errors that interfere with meaning.
