Dear College Community,

The Rostrevor grounds looked magnificent on Saturday morning and many thanks need to go to the groundsmen who have done a fantastic job preparing and maintaining all of the various playing areas. It was also fantastic to see so many excited and enthusiastic participants at the College for the 2016 Inter-Collegiate competition against Sacred Heart College. I would like to thank the parents, family members and students who witnessed the 1st XI soccer team claim victory on Friday afternoon, as well as those who were there on Saturday to support the various teams. The day was made special by the crowd who provided a great atmosphere which our boys truly appreciated.

Well done to all participants on the day, and especially to those boys who were awarded Intercol medals.

Game Summary: Our Round 10 Intercol clash vs Sacred Heart was our biggest game and biggest test for the season. A win for the team would result in us being winners of the Messenger Shield and Finalist for the Knockout Cup. The importance of the game wasn't lost on the playing group as throughout the week preparation was based around readiness for a Grand Final. Sacred Heart outplayed us in our first encounter earlier in the season and the playing group were determined to showcase themselves better this time around.

The game was hot right from the start with both teams playing with the high intensity expected of an Intercol match. In the first quarter, Sacred Heart were cleaner with their hands and ball work resulting in them creating a number of shots on goal. Fortunately, due to our good pressure and the opposition not taking their opportunities, we were kept in the game and that was all we needed.

In the second quarter with Sacred Heart leaving the door slightly open, we started our charge as we began to settle more and raise our pressure around the ball. Our ball movement was better as we started to run in numbers and we began to play more direct with the football. This resulted in us having a strong quarter and going into the half time break with a slight 5 point lead and with pressure back on the opposition.

After half time, Sacred Heart took their intensity to another level, kicking 2 quick goals after the break, impacting the previous belief in the playing group prior to going into the break. The First XVIII players went into survival mode trying to hold off the surge. Sacred Heart dominated the quarter as we failed to control possession and the speed of the game, resulting in Sacred Heart going into ? time with a strong 28 point lead.

In the last quarter the playing group were keen to fight the game out. This they did and despite trying to take the game on and be more attacking, their inability to use the ball effectively going forward resulted in a number of turn overs and we were unable to make significant impact on the scoreboard. In the end, Sacred Heart were too strong and held up well scoring on our turn overs and finishing with a 42 point win.

Mihail Lochowiak continued his fine season and the State U16 representative with his consistent dashing and positive runs of play was rewarded with being awarded the Intercol Medal. Fellow U16 State representatives Luke Valente and Jacob Kennerley also played fine games showing they were not overawed by the big game and played with great composure and assurance. Toby Pink again showed his athleticism and strong marking prowess in the ruck. Guy Hutchinson and Josh Richards had solid games in the midfield. Down back, Lewis McCormack continued his strong development as a defender with good support from Liam Durdin and Dylan Smith. We again struggled up forward but Darcy Fogarty had strong moments during the game and finished with 4 goals.

1ST XI SOCCER ROSTREVOR DEF SACRED HEART 3-2

Another Friday night, another victory. The first XI roll on into August carrying form, unexpected at the beginning of the campaign, but very welcome. Calm conditions and a reasonable pitch meant that our brand of pass-and-move football was able to be employed. With the team at almost full strength, difficult decisions had to be made but a confident Red'n'Black outfit ran out onto the Main Oval to contest the Intercollegiate Trophy. At the start, the pace of Matthew Mezzini on the wing, and close control of Julian Spadavecchia in the midfield, caused problems for a fast and physical Hearts side. An early setback was the injury to Louis Conterno, which caused a change around in the middle and the entry of Mark Ulaj to the fray. After several attacks, the first Rossie goal was scored after a corner from the left was bundled over by Patrick Caraccia to the delight of the assembled Rostrevor Supporter Group on the hill. Lucas Fazzini, repaying the faith the manager had placed in him, stormed to the edge of the box to meet a fast break on the right; Isaac Varano, playing through Mezzini to Fazzini. The shot rocketed in at the near post from 20 yards to stun the Sacred Heart support and management. At 2-0 the defence came under an assault with Sam Belyovski and skipper, Nathan Monda holding firm; marshalled well by the talented young keeper, Jamie Signorello. A poor decision in midfield led to a free kick 40 yards out which was drifted over into the rushing attackers, leaving the defence with an impossible situation and 2-1. The Red'n'Black needed to regroup and were looking to the clock when another break down the right with a pinpoint cross was waiting to be tapped in at the far post when the outstretched leg, and booted foot, of a Sacred Heart defender made unfortunate contact to put us 3-1 up at half time.

A sobering discussion in the rooms was needed to put a lid on the lads expectations. We had to go out and play as though it was nil nil! The Rossi boys didn't quite get into gear until a second yellow card for our midfield general Caraccia spurred the boys into some desperate defending. The Sacred Heart keeper had kept them in the game and a second goal, caused by some loose turf and a slip let them in with a sniff. As the seconds ticked down, the game became spiteful and with Rossi down to 10 men, it was a struggle to hold back the boys in blue. Several long clearances later brought the final whistle and with it another victory in the Intercol, much to the delight of RC supporters and players.

? With 2 rounds of competition to go, there are only a couple of teams hanging onto an undefeated record from their 10 matches played this season. The 1st XI soccer team, the 10A soccer team and the 8A soccer team will be keen to finish off their seasons strongly and we wish them well in their endeavors.
