AS A COMMUNITY WE CELEBRATE OUR CLASS OF 2017

Year 12 Graduation

> Principal's Address

Firstly thank you to all of the parents and families of our Graduates. Year 12 in particular can be a difficult and stressful time and often this can affect families in unexpected ways. The fact that your son or daughter is here this evening celebrating the milestone of graduating from Secondary school is testament to your love, care and support of them. Thank you also for your support of Gleeson College in our endeavours to provide rich faith and learning opportunities for your children, it is a valued and essential part of our College. I know that for some families, tonight signals the conclusion of, what has been in some cases, a very long and significant connection to the College.

Thank you for the privilege of having journeyed together and every best wish to you and your families for the future.

Secondly, an exceptional group of people that have worked tirelessly to ensure that our Year 12 students have every opportunity to succeed are the staff of Gleeson College. I witness daily these incredibly committed and talented educators and support staff provide care, guidance and advocacy for the students in their care. A Graduation is not only about acknowledging Year 12 teachers who have worked with our Graduates this year, but all teaching and ESO staff who have in some way had a positive and lasting impact on our Year 12 class over the past five years.

A significant aspect that characterises this group of Year 12's perhaps a

little differently than others that have graduated previously is the significant number of students who joined Gleeson College from other schools along the secondary school journey. They have had a great and positive impact on our school. This is testament to these people, but is also a tribute to the way that this group of students care for and embrace others. You have been an exceptionally close Year level who have developed friendships that I suspect will in some cases - last a lifetime.

So finally to the Class of 2017. My hope for each of you is that you cultivate all the skills and dreams that you have and do all the other things, the ambitious things that life offers but as you do these wondrous things, to the extent that you

YEAR 12 GRADUATION > 2017 College Executive Valedictory Speech

Our 2017 College Executive addressed their peers, families and staff at our Year 12 Graduation Dinner on Tuesday evening - and what a marvellous job they did! Following are some excerpts

from their Valedictory Speech:

Class of 2017 College President > Lachlan Agius

We would like to recognise and thank our families and friends who have been

a source of support and love through the various emotional breakdowns and countless rants we have made over the years. You all have been paramount to helping us to succeed and without you we could not have reached the fullness

of our potential.

To future Year 12 students, I'd like to remind you to appreciate all that your families and loved ones do for you. It

may be tough sometimes, but they genuinely do have your best interests

at heart and care deeply for your education.

Class of 2017 College President > Britney Shorter

We have made it to this moment. Now we have some of the most exciting years of our lives ahead of us and there is nothing we can't achieve. Our futures hold whatever we want them to with whoever we want them

to. Some of us know where we will be

in six months, two years, or even 10 years' time. But for some, it's a mystery

and that may be daunting at first, but it means there are so many options. Our hope is that we all find happiness in our lives and with the lessons and friendships we made and will take away from Gleeson College, I know we will. I am truly grateful to have had the privilege to spend the rest of our high school journey with so many amazing, intelligent young people and made

amazing friends along the way.

Thanks to everyone in our cohort we have created this group of bright individuals we stand with and are today.

Class of 2017 College Vice President > Tim Camilleri

It may be hard to believe but after five years of schooling at Gleeson, the

equivalent of 186 weeks, we are finally ready to graduate. Many of us could never have imagined in our wildest dreams, what would have unfolded

over our five years. From our first day of school starting out as timid Year 8 students, to where we are today, as the

Graduating Class of 2017!

During our schooling life at Gleeson, we all have had many road bumps along the way, whether it be not completing our schoolwork on time, difficulty understanding a maths

concept or issues in our social circle,

but through all these issues we were able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If we hadn't, we wouldn't be where we are today! Nevertheless, our journey couldn't be possible without

some amazing people in our lives. Firstly, to all the staff at Gleeson, whether we were fortunate enough to be inspired by you as a Year 8 student, or as you motivated us through our final year of study. To all the other teachers and support staff between, we thank you too from the bottom of our hearts for the untiring dedication and support that has helped us to strive for our very

best.

Class of 2017 College Vice President > Georgia Craggs

Now, here we stand. Our time at the top is over and it's time for others to fill our shoes. We learned to measure our days by lessons, counting down the minutes

to 3.20pm, but we measure our five years not in lessons or semesters, but in the memories we are fortunate to share.

To all the other year levels, let us remind you that Year 12 is like no other year at Gleeson. From our Year 8 Camp, to our Retreats and Formals, we have

shared so many memories. These year level events have helped to build cohesion amongst our cohort, while also being the starting point of many

lifelong friendships.

YEAR 12 GRADUATION 2017 > THANK YOU!

We sincerely thank the following people for their support and valued contribution to our Year 12 Graduation celebration in 2017. Thank you to Dr Neil McGoran, Director of Catholic Education South Australia, and Mr Peter Kuss, Principal of Golden Grove High School, Mr Peter Stewart, Chair of the College Board, Ms Elizabeth Thompson and Mrs

Kelly Martin, Co-Chairs of the P&F Committee, for your welcomed attendance. Thank you to the House Leadership Team and Leadership Team members for your assistance with presentations and to the teaching and support staff

whom have journeyed with the Class of 2017 throughout their secondary education.

In an offer of our collective gratitude, I would particularly like to recognise the creative work and attention to detail of Kerri-Anne Freeth. Without her expertise we wouldn't have had smoothly managed administration and visual

presentations. Kerri-Anne also does a fantastic job ensuring students and the House Leadership Team had ever thing they needed for tonight to be a success. Thank you Kerri-Anne. A final thank you to the amazing band, Orange Whip, for entertaining us on the night and to the staff of the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Event Photography and Staging

Connections for AV expertise.

To the Graduating Class of 2017 ? seeds of potential were planted, you discovered potential pathways, we watched your potential blossom and we looked on in pride as you embraced your excellence. May your journey through life always be With One Heart.

can, always be guided in the direction of care for the other. Make sure that your impact on the world leads you to do those things that incline you toward the big questions, and avoid the things that would reduce you and make you trivial. The most valuable things in life are not visible to the eye: faith, love, friendship, hope, integrity, trust, compassion. These bring substance, fulfilment, and lasting joy to our lives.

Year 12 Graduation Parent Reflection

> Elizabeth Thompson

I remember dropping my daughter off on the first day of Year 8. I do not know who was more nervous. I remember driving home on that day, thinking, "Will she make friends, will she enjoy the school, will she be able to do the work and how will she cope with all the homework she will be getting, did we make the right choice?"

During that first year of school, I assume like everyone else, we had our ups and downs while she tried to work out where she belonged in the school and making that transition from primary school to high school. Over the years, we as parents have watched our children throughout their high school years, sometimes with fear and sadness, but mainly with amazement and joy, as our children discovered who they are and what they can achieve.

I am thankful for what Gleeson College has provided for our children. Every week when I read The Globe I discover the many opportunities our children have to participate in, from Saturday Morning Sport to Immersion Trips, many camps and Retreats, plus the College Musicals, which were so very entertaining. I'm so thankful for the support Gleeson has provided for our children to reach their full potential.

FAITH IN ACTION > Students Create Handmade Christmas Gifts

On Wednesday this week, Middle School Care Groups from

across all Houses gathered together during their final Personal Development Program (PDP) lessons to partake in a range of activities organised and run by both the Senior and Middle School

Care Group Staff.

The students worked together in small groups to create handmade candles, bath bombs, cards and

bon-bons, while enjoying each other's company. Everyone

participated well while listening to the festive carols - the enthusiasm

from all was infectious!

These handmade gifts will be packaged up and placed into Christmas Hampers which will be forwarded to St Vincent de Paul Society for the purpose of distribution to families in our local community. The workshops were a great opportunity to have some fun, try new things and to put our faith in action thinking about those families less fortunate than us this

Christmas season.

THAT'S A WRAP > Saturday Morning Sport 2017

2017 has shown both growth and development across the sporting opportunities that we offer, and we have seen numbers and teams growing in both Soccer and Netball, as well as participation numbers growing in Badminton and Softball. Our Open Girls Volleyball and Basketball, and Boys Basketball Teams also remained strong and consistent.

The Gleeson Sports Program again saw GC Old Scholars wanting to continue their call to service within their community, which further strengthens our relationship with the vision of Archbishop Gleeson.

This year we saw the inclusion of Girls 9-a-Side AFL Football played on Wednesday afternoons, which allowed our students the opportunity to represent the College for the first time or the first time in a different sport. As a Coordinator, it was a true privilege to immerse myself within the teams that represented us, and further develop a strong relationship with our students by supporting and encouraging them to try new things. Each sport's success can be attributed to the pride and leadership of our students who continue to encourage their friends to come and play. One of our greatest strengths is having friends play alongside each other, and the moments shared between friends both on and off the pitch or court, and will stay with them as fond memories of their time at the College.

The versatility and willingness of students to try new sports or put themselves out there has been our greatest challenge this year, but at the same time our greatest reward. We where privileged to have students represent us in the following sports over the 2017 sporting calendar: Basketball (Boys), Badminton (Boys and Girls), 9-a-Side AFL Football (Girls), Netball (Girls), Soccer (Boys and Girls), Softball (Girls), Tennis (Boys) and Volleyball (Girls).

Each team had its own challenges, but this provided a foundation for another successful year in School Sport. To our Coaches, we thank you for your valued contribution, and giving of your time and experience, to all our students in

2017. Thank you Erica Greet, Maggie Fitzharris, Mr Luke Manuel, Mr Clint Vause, Ms Josephine Imbrogno, Amy Uglesic, Maddie Glover, Jordan Glover, Brooke Coleman-Oakes, Chelsea Turner, Jessica Saul, Sarah Pope, Mr Dion Kirk, Jayden Kirk, Johnny Librino, Carlo Librino, Jack Ward, Daniel Luciano, Jai D'Antonio, Matthew Chalmers, Kimberley Elliott, Cameron Wood, Emily Boyle, Ms Alesia Sala and Joseph McGuire.

Lastly, thank you to all the students who represented Gleeson College with dignity, pride and respect - your continued commitment and willingness

to put your hand up to try a new sport, to fill in on the odd occasion or to muster your friends to come and play alongside of you is appreciated. To the parents and caregivers who gave of their time each Saturday morning, please know this is so greatly appreciated, as you have helped allow the students to share in moments and create memories that will stay with them, even after their years at the College have ended.

Ms Rachel Staffin, Sports Development Coordinator
