Updated: 12/31/2020 by Computer Hope AutoHotkey is a fantastic free and open source Microsoft Windows tool that allows you to create macros, scripts, and automate tasks frequently performed on your computer. Below are the steps of where to install AutoHotkey on your computer. Download AutoHotkey on download. When the download is complete, run the installer. The UAC prompt asks for permission to install it. Choose Yes. The installer gives you the option of Custom Installation or Express Installation. If you want to see all the installation options, you can choose Custom Installation. Otherwise, it's ok to choose Express Installation. When the installation is complete, you will be presented with another menu. Choose Run AutoHotkey. Once the AutoHotkey help file opens, you can read or close it now. To open it later, you can find it in your Start menu under AutoHotkey AutoHotkey Help. Then the installer will ask you if you want to edit a new AutoHotkey script. Choose Yes. The installer now exits, and a new text file opens in Notepad, which will be our script. (A script is a plain text file that contains a series of commands that will run another program, in this case, AutoHotkey.) As an example, you can enter the following code in notepad. In the example, the code writes Hello World! every time the Windows +Q key is pressed on the keyboard. ; Example shortcut key#q::Send, Hello World!return Once the above code is added to your script or other code is added to your script. This script, AutoHotkey.ahk, is in the Documents folder. Open a new File Explorer window (keyboard: Windows+E key) and go to Documents. Run the script by doubleclicking the file. If you want to make changes to a script that is not yet open, you can use the Edit this script option to edit the running script. Click the DOWNLOAD NOW button there to save the setup wizard, and then open that to add WinHotKey to windows. The WinHotKey window in the previous shot includes a list of windows 10 default hotkeys. Create a desktop shortcut as before by selecting New > From Shortcut desktop context menu. Press Browse and select the nirCmd executable path from there, but don't click next yet. Turn the NirCmd shortcut on a muted Hotkey by right-clicking it, selecting Properties and entering a key in the Shortcut Key text box. You can configure a variety of NirCmd hotkeys in the same way.
