COVID-19 FAQ – Emergency Fund Phase 2, Seniors Funding About the New Horizons for Seniors Program Funding Overview: On March 29, the Prime Minister announced $9 million in funding to United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC) to support vulnerable seniors at risk due to the COVID-19 crisis. United Way Halton & Hamilton (UWHH) is pleased to support this important investment by the Federal Government and is working to quickly deploy funds in response to the urgent needs of seniors.Canada’s seniors are at greatest risk of poor health outcomes due to the COVID-19 crisis, with social isolation and poverty placing seniors in even more precarious circumstances. We know seniors are worried about being isolated from their community, getting their hot meals delivered, filling their prescriptions, doing their shopping or seeing their doctors. They are also concerned about being alone and even more isolated in their homes during this pandemic. This fund will provide urgent funds to help ensure they have the supports they need.Funds from the New Horizons Senior Program will be used to quickly address vulnerable seniors’ most urgent needs and boost the capacity of our front-line agencies. UWHH is working alongside key stakeholders – municipalities, local public health, community agencies and foundations – to ensure funds go where they are needed most.COVID-19 Emergency Fund Phase 2, Seniors Funding FAQHow much did UWHH receive in Federal funding? We received $218,794 to invest in Halton & Hamilton communities. When can agencies apply for funding and when will UWHH distribute funds?Applications for Phase 2 funding will open on Tuesday April 21, 2020, and are due by submission to communityinvestment@uwhh.ca on or before 11:59 PM, Monday April 27, 2020. UWHH will invest the funds in communities by May 15, 2020, or earlier.Please visit the Agency Emergency Relief web page for more details and the most up-to-date information: Who can apply for this funding?Phase 2 funding is an open call to all local non-profit agencies focusing on supporting seniors. UWCC has a redistribution agreement with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). ESDC criteria defines persons aged 55+ as a senior. For the purposes of this funding, the majority (roughly 60% or more) of a program’s recipients should be over the age of 55. Basic Eligibility RequirementsTo be eligible to receive funding from United Way Halton & Hamilton, agencies must meet the following eligibility requirements:a. Be incorporated as a registered charitable agency/organization with the Canada Revenue Agency and operating for a minimum of two years.b. Have a clearly stated purpose and function within the voluntary human and social service sector operating and service the Halton and/or Hamilton communities.c. Be governed by an active volunteer Board of Directors whose members reflects the community it serves.d. Adhere to the Ontario Human Rights Code and not exclude anyone from service, accommodation or employment by reason of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, or disability. e. Be seeking support for services/initiatives that align with one or more of the four support themes for the COVID-19 Emergency Fund.How will UWHH manage these funds?UWHH will distribute funds to community programs supporting the immediate needs of seniors, as impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are working closely with municipalities, local public health authorities, Labour Community and foundations to coordinate investments where they are needed most. UWHH will use its expertise, relationships, and local knowledge to identify and prioritize which gap(s) or need(s) to respond to immediately. This will ensure rapid and flexible response in communities and leverage our existing ability to manage funds accountably for community benefit.Will these funds meet all urgent needs, for all vulnerable seniors? It is not possible to meet all needs with this round of funding. The purpose of these funds is to provide some immediate support in response to a gap or need for seniors.
