Film Analysis: Swing Kids

Questions to help “read” a film

1. What are the layers of context/setting in this film? (What is important to note about the era as well as each of the boys’ backgrounds and homes specifically with regard to how they make decisions?)

2. How does the filmmaker convey darkness or evil? Is it through the plot, imagery, characters, setting? What expressions of darkness had the most impact on you and why?

3. Specific focus on character as representation of darkness: Who or what is evil in this film? From whose perspective or in what context? (Think about what Arvid thinks is wrong; how do Thomas’s views differ from Peter’s by the end of the movie? Who or what is viewed as evil by each of these three characters?)

4. What factors contribute to the characters’ actions? What patterns in society or contexts help and/or hinder and/or change their behaviour?

5. What are the roots of this person’s choices/evil behaviour? What are the choices he/she makes, and how could they have been made differently? (What could Thomas have done differently? What other options did Arvid have? Why did Thomas and Peter make such different choices?) How do the characters symbolize the darkness/light in all of us? In humanity?
