2014 Summer Session Financial Aid

You Should Read This: Because summer is considered the final semester of the 2013-2014 award year, summer financial aid is very limited. A student’s eligibility for summer aid is generally the amount of annual eligibility remaining or not used during the fall & spring semesters. Please feel free to ask if you are eligible for financial aid for Summer Session before completing this application.

A. Summer Session Registration

Summer applications will not be processed until you have registered for summer courses. If you are attending the early session, you must complete the registration process no later than April 18, 2014 in order to ensure that your summer aid is ready by the first day of the session (although you may still register for summer courses and apply for summer financial aid after this date). When you submit this application, we will begin processing and will base your eligibility on the courses you are registered for at that time. Attendance during the first summer school session requires payment of fees by May 19th. Because your financial aid may not be available by that date, you may need to contact Student Accounts/Cashier’s in the SUB or at 885-7447 regarding fee payment options.

B. Required Forms

All students must submit the following forms to be considered for aid during the 2014 summer session:

1. 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

2. The online Summer Application on VandalWeb OR the paper Summer 2014 Financial Aid Application (This form!)

C. Summer Session Financial Aid Eligibility

Federal Pell Grant: Students who are eligible for Pell Grant and did not attend full-time for both fall ’13 and spring ’14

semesters may be eligible to receive Pell Grant in the summer. Eligibility for Pell Grant will be evaluated before loan eligibility.

Federal Direct Stafford Loans: Students who have not borrowed their full annual limits during the fall ’13 and spring ’14 semesters may have remaining Direct Stafford Loan eligibility for summer. Annual limits are based on year in school as measured by cumulative credits. For an explanation of annual loan limits for Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Stafford Loans, visit .

Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan: Because there is no annual limit for Graduate PLUS loans, Graduate and Law students may receive this loan to help with summer expenses. Creditworthiness is required. For more information visit the federal web site: .

Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan: Parents may apply for a Direct PLUS loan for their dependent undergraduate student. Information is available on our web site at and the application can be completed at .

Alternative (bank) Loans: Students who need additional funding options may apply for an alternative loan through a lender of their choice. Information about some lenders is available on our web site at or you may inquire in our office.

D. Summer Session Enrollment Hours

The number of credits a student will need to be enrolled for in order to be considered for aid during the summer session is the same as during the fall and spring semesters:

Undergraduate Students: full-time = 12 credits; half-time = 6 credits. Students must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for loans. Some students may be eligible for Pell Grants at less than half-time.

Graduate & Law Students: full-time = 9 credits (Grad) 10 credits (Law); half-time = 5 credits. Students must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for loans. No financial aid is available for graduate & law students enrolled less than half-time.

E. Summer School Cost of Attendance

Your Cost of Attendance for the summer session must be calculated in order to determine your financial aid eligibility.

Your summer budget will be determined by combining the actual costs of tuition and fees with the cost of all other budget components which are: room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses. Your summer budget will depend on the number of weeks you are attending classes during the summer term and the number of credits for which you are registered at the time we process this application. Cost of attendance can not be calculated until you have registered for classes.
