Additional information and updates will be distributed on a regular basis.I have a student who says he/she is unable to continue the course in an online format. What should I do?Advise students of the following options: Request an Incomplete grade for the course. This will not affect a student’s GPA. The student does not have to retake the course if he/she requests an Incomplete. Instead, the student should be given an extended amount of time to complete the course (6 months).Request an administrative withdrawal. The student must complete the online course withdrawal form. There will be no penalty for withdrawing from the course. The administrative withdrawal will not count toward the five W’s a student can earn throughout his/her academic career. Any student will have until April 23rd to request an administrative withdrawal.Request a Pass/Fail grade. Faculty will enter regular grades at the end of the spring 2020 term. Students will have up to 60 days after the end of the term to request a P/F grade. In general, a faculty member will assign a “P” grade if the student has earned a “C” or better in the course. If a student can earn a “D” in a course and still pass (which is common in core courses), the “D” can be considered a “P” grade. P/F grades will not be factored into the GPA. The P/F grade is available to all spring 2020 students. Will early college students return to my class?Yes, early college students will resume classes on March 23rd. Conceivably, many of the students have not taken an online class, so it will be important for you to work with them. Instructions on how to use the software applications commonly used in the classroom are included in the Student FAQ that is posted on the coronavirus webpage which can be accessed through the FSU homepage.I have a student who does not have a computer and/or Internet access. What should I do?Academic Affairs has distributed a survey to students. Thus far, of the 620 responses, 25 percent of students do not have a laptop and 15 percent do not have an Internet Provider because they live in a rural area. It is important that faculty consider this fact as they proceed through the semester. We have a significant number of students who do not have a webcam, will be unable to download proctoring packages such as Respondus, and may even have difficulty accessing Canvas. Most do have a cell phone, so sending emails and allowing them to submit assignments through email will be very helpful. The computer lab on campus is open, but many students do not live in Fayetteville and will not be able to take advantage of this resource. The university has a limited number of computers to distribute. FSU also has a limited number of hotspot subscriptions for those who live in rural areas and do not have an Internet Provider. If you need a laptop or hotspot subscription, please submit a help ticket (not an email) via our ticketing system at:? .?? Submitting a ticket will ensure the student’s request is routed to the appropriate staff member in a timely manner.Students can also contact ITTS at (910) 672-14367.Each college can develop alternative course options if students have limited means to access online courses and materials. This could include an arrangement for the faculty and student to communicate via telephone or email/U.S. mail. To the extent possible, Academic Affairs will identify and meet the needs of those requiring special accommodations. The guidance from Belle Wheelan, President of SACSCOC is copied below. As you can see from the highlighted section, she is asking that we move toward making sure students fulfill the learning outcomes, and we may need to think of creative ways to do that. From:?Belle S. Wheelan?<bwheelan@>Date: Tue, Mar 17, 2020 at 2:41 PMSubject: SACSCOC General Guidance for Institutions Which Must Suspend Operations Due to COVID-19 PandemicTo: CEOs of SACSCOC Institutions <CEOs@>CC: Institutional Accreditation Liaisons <IALO@>?We at SACSCOC are aware that our member institutions are making decisions with the health and welfare of students, faculty, and staff – and their families – uppermost in mind.? We also know that decisions made by the federal, state, and local governments will have a profound effect on institutional options.? In some cases, institutions may choose (or be forced to) suspend all operations for a time in order to preserve public health.? Given our best information about this pandemic, such a suspension could well extend beyond the scheduled end of the current term.?At this point, most institutions appear to be using various technologies to support the continuity of instruction, asynchronously and at a distance.? Many are raising questions about the integrity of educational courses and programs, however, should institutions be forced to suspend operations to the point where they can no longer support the continuity of instruction.? Some institutions are already planning to accelerate course delivery in order to ensure that the stated learning outcomes and competencies of the courses are met.? Another option might involve offering students alternative ways to demonstrate the competencies required by the course(s) within the current academic term dates, including a partial “independent study” or “tutorial” format.? For courses where that is not an option, institutions may wish to consider conferring temporary grades of “incomplete.”? Other options might include allowing students to re-enroll in a subsequent term without paying tuition, or conferring “pass/fail” grades and considering providing a reasonable exception to institutional policies regarding completing work for an “incomplete.”? In the case of complete suspension, however, the coursework would be completed, graded, and recorded at some point after the institution has resumed the appropriate level of operation to perform such administrative functions.? In addition, the suspension of operations would likely mean that events like commencement would be postponed or cancelled.?Some institutions may be considering altering their academic calendar and truncating the current academic term.??If an institution cannot, with integrity, demonstrate that courses have been “completed” (i.e., course outcomes/competencies have been demonstrated), the institution would probably either consider students to have been withdrawn for this term or find some formula to determine whether students could be awarded partial credit for the work completed.? In all likelihood, the decision to shorten the academic calendar/term would have significant financial aid implications that would need to be considered (including, among others, the possibility of returning Title IV funds and calculating satisfactory academic progress).?Unlike the temporary “relocation” of course delivery to an online modality, suspending operations would not constitute a substantive change for a member institution.? In order to maintain good information, however, an institution that suspends all operations should send a letter of notification to me as President of SACSCOC.? That letter should provide the date on which operations will be suspended and information about institutional decisions regarding the remaining portion of the current academic term.? Once the institution has resumed operations, a follow-up letter of notification should be sent to my office.? Likewise, institutions that have chosen to shorten their academic calendar should also send that information in a letter to me.? If you need any additional guidance, please feel free to contact me.?STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!!!?Belle S. Wheelan, Ph.D., PresidentSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on CollegesBest PracticesTwo discussion forums have been created on Canvas to allow faculty to exchange ideas and to interact on issues that are outside of the classroom experience.
