| |Go to a neighborhood park—sort of an expansion of the school walk, notice the route you take, or |

| |students could make a map of the park (will need to take clipboards, paper etc. for this), |

| |Find a historic building with a map made of it (say a governor’s mansion perhaps) that students |

| |could follow, so they could see how they use the map to find their way around, and see what was |

| |important to the mapmaker to put on the map compared to another map. Sutter’s fort would be good. |

| |The zoo, get a map beforehand, study it with the class, plan a route maybe, and go do the trip. (If|

| |there’s someplace that would be good for this and they don’t have a map, you could always just make|

| |up a simple one.) |
