Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Whitehall-Coplay School District is committed to providing a safe learning environment for our students and we are closely monitoring the outbreak of respiratory illness from a new strain of coronavirus named “2019-nCoV”.  You may have read of this in the news recently.

Please note that as of today, there are no reports of any confirmed cases of 2019-nCoV involving a Whitehall-Coplay School District student or employee.

We are monitoring several sources of information regarding the virus. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is providing updates on the virus at this link:  .   In addition, we receive guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Health and other state and local agencies. A one page (Fact Sheet) has been created by the CDC.

The guidance provided from CDC is that students who are sick should stay home, and families should consult their pediatrician or health care provider.

The symptoms of 2019-nCoV can be very similar to the flu and include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough and shortness of breath. The suspected incubation period is believed to be from two to 14 days.

The CDC reports that there is currently no vaccine to prevent infection, but you can take precautions to help prevent the spread of viruses:

• wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;

• avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands;

• avoid close contact with people who are sick;

• stay home when sick;

• cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash;

• clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces.

Our District custodial staff is working diligently to ensure that our facilities are properly cleaned on a daily basis. Please consider discussing the CDC preventative care recommendations with your family to help prevent the spread of any virus. Our district nurses are carefully monitoring our students for symptoms. Should you have any questions regarding student illness in school, please contact the nurse’s office at your child’s school.

Respectfully,

Dr. Lorie Hackett
