ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ASSESSMENT POLICIES

In compliance with the Bay District Schools new APP policies (Assessment Principles and Practices), Mosley’s English Department has set forth the following departmental policies for all students:

Grading Policy

Grades will be calculated using a total points system. Each assignment will be assessed a point value based on its complexity level. The more complex the assignment, the greater point value it will have. For example, a vocabulary quiz may be worth twenty points, whereas an essay or unit test could be as much as two hundred points. It is a simple calculation of total points divided by total points earned. By moving the decimal two places to the right, you will be able to see the score as a percentage. While formative grades will not be used to calculate the student’s overall grade in the class, a record of completed assignments will be documented in order to determine the student’s level of engagement with the coursework and preparedness for summative evaluations.

REASSESSMENT

Students will be given the opportunity for re-assessment if the level of mastery for the standard being measured has not been met. However, before a student is allowed to complete a reassessment, he or she must complete required remediation to be determined by the teacher in order “to show evidence of additional learning” and by turning in and/or revising all formative assignments within the unit. It should also be noted that the reassessment will be an alternate assessment. Any and all remediation and reassessment needs to be completed within five school days of receiving feedback on the initial grade.

3)      Teachers provide students with multiple and various opportunities to demonstrate level of mastery of each standard.

b)      The intent of a reassessment is not for students to continually reassess to get an “A”.

The intent of a reassessment is to provide students an additional opportunity to show increased standards’ proficiency/mastery.

Prior to reassessments, an appropriate remediation/re-teaching opportunity will be provided.  The student is required to show evidence of additional learning to the teacher (i.e. peer tutoring, teacher tutoring, revising their work, practicing the skill in a given way

EXTRA CREDIT

Extra credit will not be given at any time.

Source from APP 2.1.5 - Extra Credit will not be given at any time.

GROUP WORK

Group work will be graded individually and it will be up to the student to provide evidence of the skills and mastery accomplished.

Source from APP 2.1.1- Grading is based on individual achievements of standards; group work will not be used for individualized grading.

LATE WORK

Late work will be labeled “Missing” in Focus and must be turned in within 5 days of the work missed to receive a deduction of, at most, 10% from the final grade. Consistently* late work will receive additional action as determined by the teacher. All late work must be turned in before two weeks from a final grading period.

Source from APP 2.1.3.b - Late work will be coded with a ** until the work has been submitted to the teacher and then graded according to the original stated standards. Multi-work projects, essays, etc. that are submitted late may receive deductions of no more than 10% of the total assignment. (2.3.3) Additional appropriate action, as determined by the teacher and/or site administration, may be taken for consistently late work.

CHEATING/PLAGAIRISM

Students who plagiarize and/or cheat will be punished with: a written referral, appropriate disciplinary actions, and a zero for failing to master the state standard LAFS.7.3.8. A reassessment will be allowed after disciplinary action requirements have been met. A maximum of a 10% reduction in the grade will be assessed.

Source from APP 2.1.3.c - Disciplinary actions in response to cheating/plagiarism will be in accordance with the Bay District Schools Disciplinary Matrix.

Source from LAFS.7.W.3.8- Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation
