The active voice follows this formula:Subject + Verb (+ Object). In the active voice, the position of the subject, verb, and object does not change, but the object is optional to use.Marcelo painted (the room).Fatemeh speaks (with Yue every day).Jose is going to eat (his lunch). However, if we want to draw attention to the object of the sentence, rather than the subject, we have the option of using the passive voice. The passive voice follows this formula:Object + Be + Participle Verb (+ By Subject/Agent)In the passive voice, the order of the object and subject is reversed, but the idea of the sentence doesn’t change. The subject is optional to use.The criminal was caught (by the police).Pedestrians are injured (by drivers) in car accidents a lot in this city. The president will be elected (by his people). There is no rule that forces you to use the passive or active voice over the other. It is a choice made by the speaker or the writer. We usually use the passive voice when we don’t know the subject or the object is more important. It’s recommended to use the active voice more, but the passive voice is more “diplomatic” since it doesn’t need the subject. Compare:You made a mistake. = direct, accusing (active)A mistake was made. = diplomatic/indirect, not accusing (passive)Asking questions in the passive voiceIf we want to ask questions using the passive voice, we have two ways to do it: yes/no questions, and information questions. The formula for asking yes/no questions looks like this:Be + Object + Participle Verb (+ By Subject/Agent)?The formula for asking information questions looks like this:Wh-word + Be + Object + Participle Verb (+ By Subject/Agent)?A computer was bought by Oula. When you are finished, join a partner and explain, using prepositions of place, areas around your house. Then, write a paragraph describing your map.“This is a map of my neighborhood. I live at 6708 Monk Boulevard, almost next to Monk metro. The street has a number of shops like a nail salon, a pharmacy, and a bank branch. My apartment is across the street from a supermarket. Angrignon Park is not too far from my apartment, and I’m only a couple of blocks away from the aqueduct canal and a bike path. I don’t live close to the school or my gym, but the commute isn’t that long.”Thursday, December 17, 2020Activity 1: Speaking – Pair Vocabulary PracticeSit with a partner to practice vocabulary. Answer these questions:Did you have to do a background check to enter Canada?Have you ever watched a sunrise or sunset? What is the official year of your country’s independence or founding?Have you ever needed to be placed in quarantine? Are you a religious person? If you are, do you consult with a priest about religious questions?Do you live close to a laundromat, dry cleaner, nail salon, or liquor store?Student answersAlla had to do a background check to enter Canada. It took about three months.Haya has watched a sunrise and sunset when she had enough time to do that.Eva’s country’s independence was November 15, 1988. She is from Palestine.Oula has never needed to be put in quarantine. Everything was okay with her; she washed her hands and wore a mask.Anas is not a religious person. He has never consulted with a priest. So Hyung lives about ten minutes by car from a laundromat. There is a shopping mall about five minutes away with a dry cleaner, liquor store, and nail salon.Yes, Hamad had to do a background check. It took three months, like Alla.Yes, Aicha has a chalet that she goes during the week outside of Montreal. When she wakes up, she sees the sunrise, and in the evening, she sees the sunset very well, with many colors.Sharmini’s country’s independence is February 4, 1948. She is from Sri Lanka.Yes, Kay had to quarantine in her home, because her granddaughter’s classmate had COVID-19.Yes, Faten has a laundromat and dry cleaner in her building. There is a nail salon three minutes away from her home on foot.Shobin never had to be placed in quarantine.Rama lived in an island and he always watched the sunrise and sunset.Activity 2: Grammar Review & Practice – PossessivesStudy information about possessives. Practice by answering questions on the handout.Possessive adjectives and pronounsPossessive adjectives (e.g. my _____) and possessive pronouns (e.g. mine) are used to indicate nouns belonging to someone or something. My _____Our _____Your _____Your _____His/Her/Its _____Their _____MineOursYoursYoursHis/HersTheirsPossessive adjectives need to indicate the proper noun after being used.I’m worried about my father. Our doctor said his heart is weak.Possessive pronouns do not indicate the proper noun; the proper noun can come before. The listener and speaker both need to know what the proper noun is before using possessive pronouns. That book is mine. Yours is over there.Your glasses are ugly. Mine are pretty. The apostrophe + S possessiveAnother way of showing possession is to add an apostrophe and an “S” (in the case of a singular noun). Do not confuse the apostrophe and “S” for the contraction of the verb “to be” in “is.” If the word after the ’s is an object or noun, it is the possessive. If the word after the ’s is an adjective or a progressive verb, it is the “be” verb. For singular nouns, we write noun + ’s to show possession. This is also the rule for plural nouns that are irregular.Sandra’s birthday is in June. [The birthday of Sandra]The teacher’s lesson is very difficult. [The lesson of the teacher]Where is Luis’s book? [the book of Luis]Where are the children’s toys? [the toys of the children]Anas’s computer uses Windows.Aicha’s pets are a cat and a dog.Alla’s sofa is brown. For regular plural nouns, we write noun + ’ to show possession. My parents’ house is for sale. The students’ answers were very good. What does the advisers’ report recommend?Asking possessive questionsTo ask a question about possession, we use whose.“Whose pencil is this?” “It’s mine.”“Whose birthday is in June?” “Her birthday is.”“Whose wallet is that?” “It’s Edwin’s wallet.”“Haya, whose cooking is the best?” “Mine.”“Eva, whose cooking is the best?” “My mother’s cooking is professional.”“Kay, whose English is the best one for you to practice with?” “My granddaughter’s English is the best one for me to practice with.”Writing a question with the verb “belong” is different from using “whose.” If you use the verb “belong,” use the auxiliary “do” with object questions. Don’t put “belong” in the same question as “whose.”Whose book is this? = Who does this book belong to?Whose phone is that? = Who does that phone belong to?Do not confuse whose with who’s. “Who’s” means “who is” or “who has.” The pronunciation of the two words is the same, but one of them asks about possession, and the other asks about a person being something.Activity 3: Speaking – PossessivesWith your group, describe a possession you have or own. Give details about it.Friday, December 18, 2020Activity 1: Grammar Practice – PossessivesContinue practicing possessives by answering questions on the handout.Activity 2: Writing & Speaking – PossessivesWrite a paragraph describing something that you own.“I have a painting in my living room. The painting was done by a local Montreal artist, and it shows a beautiful beach house and an island. Its color is vivid and strong. I bought the painting at a street fair last year. I will show you a picture of my painting, and you will agree with me that it is really nice!”Share your writing with a partner. What did you write about?Activity 3: Speaking – Pair Vocabulary PracticeSit with a partner to practice vocabulary. Answer these questions:How often do you buy disposable plates, cups, and cutlery? When do you use them?Do you own a face shield, or just a mask?Do you want to do a language exchange with people over the holiday break?Do you like to burn incense to make your room or home smell nice? Do you own a censer?Student answersAlla buys plastic utensils every week in the summer. She goes to the park and does a barbecue.Haya doesn’t use a face shield, she just wears a mask. But if the face shield becomes obligatory/mandatory (required), she thinks she will use it.If Eva sees people who speak a different language than her, she tries to learn that language. In Abu Dhabi, Oula used a censer every day. Now, she doesn’t burn incense often because her home has a fire alarm. So Hyung doesn’t like using disposable items. When she goes to a picnic, she sometimes uses them.Mohammed just uses a mask, but one time he used a face shield in an airplane. He didn’t like the feeling because sometimes his face shield hit things when looking up and down.Hamad doesn’t burn incense in his home.Kay doesn’t have a chance to practice a language exchange with people outside of her house because of COVID-19. She will practice with her granddaughter. When Shobin goes to a party, he buys disposable utensils from the store.Rama has a censer, and in the morning, he burns incense during prayer time.HomeworkDuring the break, try to read, watch, or listen to English a little bit every day. For each of the two weeks, write a paragraph describing what you read, watched, or listened to. For example:“This week I read two newspaper articles and watched a few episodes of an American television series. The newspaper articles talked about the American election and the coronavirus. The television series was on Netflix. It is called “The Queen’s Gambit,” and it is about a young woman who grew up in an orphanage and learned to play chess. She wants to become a master of the game, but she has many problems with drug addiction and socializing.”Monday, January 4, 2021Activity 1: Speaking – Holiday VacationJoin a group of classmates and discuss what you did during your break! Did you enjoy your time off school? What did you do over the holiday season? Did you have to work?Activity 2: Grammar Practice – Possessives, Who’s / WhoseReview possessives from before the plete the “Who’s vs. Whose” handout. What questions use “who’s,” and what questions use “whose?”Remember, “who’s” can be short for “who is” and “who has.” Check the word after “who’s/whose” to see if it’s an adjective, a progressive verb, or a person (which means it’s “who is”) or if it is a perfect tense verb (which means it’s “who has”). “Whose” is used with nouns to show owned objects.ExamplesWho’s that? = Who is that? That is my teacher, Marcelo.Who’s talking on the phone? = Who is talking on the phone?Who’s thirsty? = Who is thirsty?Who’s been to Brazil? = Who has been to Brazil?Whose teacup is this? = Who is the owner of this teacup?Activity 3: StartUp Book – Unit 6, Lesson 1Complete p. 65-67, ex. 1-3 in the StartUp plete exercises A, B and C on page 140.Examples of too and enoughThis tea doesn’t have enough sugar. You can go to bed.HomeworkPractice a second exercise of who’s vs. whose on a second handout.Tuesday, January 5, 2021Activity 1: Homework CorrectionCorrect the who’s vs. whose second handout as a class.Activity 2: StartUp Book – Unit 6, Lesson 1Complete p. 67, ex. 4-5 in the StartUp book.Example conversationsMy wife made me a grilled cheese sandwich, but she left it in the oven and it cooked for too long. It burned!Aicha said that she doesn’t like to eat in restaurants that are too expensive.Oula never eats out because she doesn’t think restaurants are clean enough.Rama said that his children love to eat pizzas and hamburgers a lot. He thinks they eat junk food too much.Activity 3: Writing & Speaking – Foods and Drinks You LikeWrite a paragraph describing foods and drinks you like to eat and drink. Try using adjectives and the expressions “too” and “enough” to describe them.“I love to eat Asian foods like sushi and ramen, even though I don’t eat them often enough! Sushi is always fresh and cold, and I like the sweet taste of the rice with the salty taste of the fish. Ramen is usually hot and salty too, and the different flavors mixed inside give it a lot of variety. I don’t usually drink much: I don’t like the bitter taste of coffee or tea, and they’re usually too strong for me. I am kind of boring and usually prefer to drink water.”Activity 4: StartUp Book – Unit 6, Lesson 2Complete p. 68, ex. 1, in the StartUp book.Student answersAlla thinks roses would be good for her husband and family.Oula thinks chocolates would be good for someone’s birthday or if they’re coming from the hospital. They’re good for anyone!Anas thinks a necklace would a good gift for his wife.Mohamad would give his son a scarf and gloves.Hamad would give a gift card to his teacher, his friends, his wife… It’s a good gift for anyone.Sharmini would give a card to her sons and for herself on her birthday.Aicha would give tickets to her daughter-in-law to take her kids to the Biodome or other city attractions.Kay got a gift of perfume from her husband for her birthday. She bought small traveling perfume bottles for her family.Shobin’s wife and parents got him cologne. When Rama was 16 years old, his brother-in-law got him a watch.Waheeda’s husband brought her roses for her birthday, her wedding anniversary, and when she gave birth to her baby.Wednesday, January 6, 2021Activity 1: Speaking – Grammar Practice, Too/EnoughWork with a group to practice grammar using “too” and “enough.” Answer these questions:What do you do with food that is too cold? What about food that is too hot?Do you feel like you have enough time in the day to do your chores and work? How much money is enough to have a good life? Is it possible to have too much money?Do you think there are too many people in the English class? What is the perfect number of students for a language class? When do you think you will learn enough English to be satisfied with your skills?Student answersIf the food is too cold, Haya heats it up in the microwave or the oven, depending on the food. If the food is too hot, Haya waits five or ten minutes, then she eats it.Eva feels she doesn’t have enough time in the day to do chores. Sometimes she has appointments or doesn’t feel good. For Alla, money is not important. She doesn’t know exactly how much is enough. Now, she leads a good life and has enough for seven or eight years. She does think it is possible to have too much money because everything changes.Oula thinks we have too many people because of the coronavirus. Ten people is a better number.Anas is not satisfied with his level because he is not studying enough. He doesn’t have enough time because he is busy with his children. He thought one year was enough, but now he needs more time.So Hyung uses the microwave or air fryer to warm up her food. She waits for the food to cool down enough to eat if it’s too cold.Mohamad thinks that now he has enough time because of the coronavirus. He doesn’t have to go outside, he just has to study at the adult center and read.Hamad thinks one million is enough, but three thousand dollars a month is also okay. It’s not easy to have a lot of money.Aicha doesn’t think there are too many people in the class, we have enough. She thinks that, after COVID, fifteen students is a good number.Salim thinks that in two years, he will learn enough English to be satisfied with his skills. If her food is too cold, Kay will put it in the microwave or stove. If her food is too hot, she will put it for a little bit in a bowl of cold water or in the refrigerator and wait for it to cool down.Faten doesn’t have enough time to do her work because she doesn’t have enough energy.Shobin thinks right now there aren’t too many people in the class. After COVID, eighteen to twenty students is the right number.Rama is still not satisfied, so he is still learning. When he speaks properly and people listening to him say he is speaking well, he will be satisfied. When Waheeda sees the food is too cold, she puts it in the microwave or oven and heats it up. When the food is too hot, she leaves it for a few minutes, and then she eats it.Marcelo thinks that having $500,000 (half a million) is a good amount of money for him to have to live his life comfortably. His life expenses aren’t that high. If he invested his money and earned enough interest every year, one million dollars would make enough interest ever year to pay for his expenses. For example, if he spent $40,000 every year, $1,000,000 invested in the stock market would probably be enough money to earn $40,000 in interest.Activity 2: StartUp Book – Unit 6, Lesson 2Complete p. 68, ex. 2, in the StartUp plete exercises B and C on page 141.Thursday, January 7, 2021Activity 1: Speaking – Grammar Practice, Direct and Indirect ObjectsWork with a group to practice grammar using direct and indirect objects. Answer these questions:What do you think of the plan to reopen schools and allow kids back into classrooms? Should the government keep students studying at home, even though Francois Legault said keeping children at home could lead to “disadvantages?”The English Montreal School Board wants to install air purifiers to improve ventilation at the schools, but some scientists think it won’t help much. Should the fans be installed anyway?Do you have school-aged children? If you do, as a parent, would you prefer the schools be reopened, or to keep your children studying at home until cases go down?Student answersAlla thinks it’s better to keep the schools closed because every store and restaurant is closed, and if her child gets COVID-19 at school, they will give it to their parents.Haya thinks students should be kept at home and learning online because the schools are not safe. All students at school communicate in groups, so she thinks it’s not a good idea to reopen the schools.Eva thinks the air purifiers are not enough for the students, because until now the season is winter. We can’t open the windows for a long time.Oula thinks her children should study at home, because other areas are not the same as schools. Even if other places were open they would not be as dangerous as schools, because people don’t go to the shopping malls, restaurants, etc. every day, but children go to schools every day.So Hyung agrees with opening schools and going to them, but she thinks we should improve our school environment. For instance, to require an equipment system and an alternating attendance schedule (one day in school, one day at home).Yes, Mohamad thinks they should install the air purifiers in schools because they would help the air for twenty or thirty people. A-C in the StartUp plete p. 115, ex. 5 in the StartUp plete p. 117, ex. 3-5 in the StartUp book.Grammar notes – Present perfect vs. simple presentThe present perfect can be used in two ways. The first is to describe an action that started in the past and continues until now:I have lived in Canada for 15 years. She has spoken English since she was a child. The second is to say an action finished in the past in a non-specific time:Shobin has been to Niagara Falls. We have watched this movie when we were kids. The present perfect tense, used in the second way, is like the simple past. The difference is that the simple past is used with specific times. Compare:I ate dinner at 8 PM. (simple past)I have eaten dinner. (present perfect)I drank a glass of water. (simple past)I have drunk a glass of water. (present perfect)Do not use specific times with the present perfect! My car has broken down yesterday. XOur teacher has given us a test two days ago. XDo not confuse the present perfect with the present perfect continuous when you don’t talk about an action that is finished:I have watched this movie. [I watched all of the episodes of this TV show.]I have been watching this show.
