This is one of the lesser festivals in the church year which interrupts the ordinal Sundays. The ordinal Sundays then continue until the Sunday proceeding the first Sunday in Advent.Except for Christmas, perhaps no church observance has been as secularized and robbed of its Christian meaning as this event. The end of October is celebrated as Halloween outside the church. Ironically, the secular holiday appropriates church terminology without even realizing it. Halloween gets its name from All Hallows eve. It was a terrifying night for pagans and some Christians. This was the night when the angry spirits of the dead were allowed to roam the earth. People wore masks to disguise themselves from vengeful spirits. This is where the custom of dressing in costumes originated.I have observed an evolution of Halloween in my lifetime. When I was a kid, it was a fun holiday with parties and trick or treating. We got to binge on candy and dump the unwanted stuff on our parents or siblings. Then by the time I had kids, safety was an issue. Parents had to screen the candy for razor blades and other sharp objects. Next, the Christian right told us Halloween was offensive. Christians were encouraged to build “halleluiah houses” instead of ghost houses and spend the night in religious devotions. Now I must tell you that I truly enjoyed Halloween. I survived it and did not grow up to be a devil worshipper or serial killer, nor did my friends. Now All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day have no religious connotation outside the church. It marks the beginning of the holiday shopping season which culminates in Black Friday following Thanksgiving Day.On the Christian calendar All Saints Sunday is a day to remember the departed who now await the return of Christ. This is especially significant in the Sacrament of Communion. On All Saints Sunday we are reminded that all the saints, both those on earth and in heaven, are sharing the Lord’s Table. For us it is a foretaste of the feast to come. For those in the promised life, it is an eternal celebration in the presence of the One seated at the right hand of the Father. We will probably never reclaim this festival from the secular world, but we can celebrate it as the church intended. At present we have only four or five volunteers for making deliveries. Three more would really make it easier on everyone. Your commitment would be to go down to Interfaith Headquarters on (NW 2nd St near the Courthouse); there you will have loaded into your auto the food that will be delivered to Sunrise Elementary School located on Marion Oaks Blvd. Here, you will go to the office and let them know who you are and the nature of your business. They will then get someone to come out to your auto and unload the food for the children. All total it should not require more than 2 to 2.5 hours of you time. Whatever you can do to assist with this program will be greatly appreciated. As in the past I expect that we will be asked to provide food baskets for 100 to 120 needy families in Marion County. With the pandemic problems, I am unable to guess at the cost per basket, at this time. All efforts will be made to keep them in the $35 to 37 (dollar range) per basket. Once again we are asking for your support both financially a well as physically to make these deliveries. Delivery date is projected to be on Wednesday, November 18th. We will start here at the church at 8AM, with any kind of luck; we should be completed before noontime. Please consider supporting this ministry.
