Doblò at a glance 42

INTRODUCTION

The new Doblò MPV goes on sale here throughout Fiat Auto’s UK dealer network, on Saturday 23 June, and joins the Multipla and the Ulysse as an extension to Fiat’s offering in the ever-expanding MPV market. Available as either petrol or diesel, and with two levels of trim, SX and ELX, Doblò is targeted primarily at families, offering an affordable alternative to cramped saloons and hatchbacks, while providing all the practicality and versatility of a true multi-purpose vehicle with class leading luggage space.

Keenly priced, it is expected to be most popular among households with medium to low incomes, and with tradespeople who can use it for both business and social use.

Class-leading space

The Doblò’s watchword is versatility. Within its compact dimensions (4.16m long, 1.71m wide and 1.80m high) it can seat five people in complete comfort, while also offering plenty of luggage space: 750 litres to parcel shelf level (the best in its class). The back seat can then be folded down to create a massive 3000 litres of load space, which means that the vehicle can carry bulky sports or leisure equipment when used for fun, or huge amounts of gear or merchandise when used on business.

Easy access

One of the Doblò’s key strong points is its accessibility. Two large, sliding side doors, along with seats that are just the right height off the ground, make it easy for people to get in and out – especially those with mobility problems. These are also a boon for

parents when they strap young children in the rear and sort out their needs before setting off. A large glazed area makes the inside of the Doblò light and airy, while its overall interior is characterised by practicality and user-friendliness.

Extra safe

The Doblò has been designed to create a new benchmark within its market segment in terms of preventative, active and passive safety. Good handling and roadholding mean that the driver can prevent dangerous situations from occurring. In the event of an accident, it’s reassuring to know that the Doblò has performed exceptionally well in numerous crash tests carried out in the Fiat Safety Centre at Orbassano. These tests are even harsher than those undertaken by European NCAP and the American STD 208.

In terms of passive safety, the Doblò MPV offers up to four airbags: two front airbags that are standard, and two optional side airbags on the ELX version. Broad bumpers, side rubbing strips and headlamp inserts also safeguard the Doblò against minor knocks and scrapes.

Build quality

It’s immediately apparent that here is a robust quality vehicle that can be relied on. However, this is not just the result of styling – its strength is underpinned by the use of quality materials, strict manufacturing standards and numerous checking processes.

Innovation

The new Doblò can be specified to contain innovative features like satellite navigation, a reverse parking sensor, ABS with EBD, a GSM phone, climate control

and, in the near future, a wide range of infotelematic services embraced by CONNECT.

THE DOBLÒ RANGE

There are two engine options in the Doblò range, a 1.2 litre 8-valve FIRE petrol engine, and a 1.9 litre normally aspirated diesel. The 1.2 litre petrol version comes in SX trim, while the 1.9 diesel is available in either SX or ELX specification.

THE MARKET

In western Europe, the ‘P’ segment, in which the Doblò competes, accounted for 220,000 sales last year, and it is predicted to rise to 256,000 in 2002. This is a rapidly expanding segment, since in 1996 it accounted for just 59,500 sales.

In the UK, ‘P’ segment has grown from around 700 units in 1998 to 6500 in 2000. The forecast for 2001 is 7800 units, an increase of 20%.

This segment is currently dominated by the Citroën Berlingo and the Renault Kangoo.

Fiat Auto UK’s 2001 target for the Doblò is around 700 units – a realistic figure that equates to 9 per cent of the segment total. The target for 2002 is 800 units, over 10 per cent of the market segment.

EXTERIOR

The bold exterior styling of the Doblò immediately indicates that here is a uniquely versatile vehicle that redefines the established rules of car design. The front end has been specifically designed to give it a tough, uncompromising appearance, while its height and square cut-off rear end confirm its spaciousness and practicality. The main design themes maximise space, versatility, manoeuvrability, comfort and functionality, creating an MPV that’s easy to live with.

Front

The bumper is moulded from impact resistant, black polypropylene and bisects the front lighting clusters to give them maximum protection. Further down, the same material forms the front spoiler, which extends right round to the front wheelarch – again protecting against scrapes and scratches.

The headlights feature a clear lens showing the individual elements beneath. Front foglights are built into these clusters and are standard on all models.

The windscreen is very deep, giving the driver an excellent forward view over the short bonnet, which in turn slopes down in order to maximise visibility.

Side

Looking at the side of the vehicle, one can see that the front windows are curved – especially at the bottom edge. This improves lower visibility and gives the door exterior a rounded, fluid profile.

Large body-coloured door mirrors provide excellent rear visibility. These are manually adjustable from the inside. Electrically operated, heated door mirrors are an optional extra.

Fiat Doblò in UK…7

There are black rubbing strips on the front and rear doors, black sliding rear door runners and black door handles with their own protective surrounds.

The front doors are generously proportioned while the sliding side rear doors provide greater access than those of both the Kangoo and Berlingo:

Sliding side door access

|Model |Height mm |Width mm |

|Doblò |1142 |645 |

|Berlingo |1120 |570 |

|Kangoo |1093 |619 |

The Doblò also has swivel-opening rear quarterlight windows. SX versions feature steel wheels with attractive wheel covers. The ELX features 14” alloy wheels.

Rear

At the rear of the Doblò, there are two types of door, according to the version. SX models feature glazed rear doors that are split 60:40, while the ELX version comes with a tailgate (optional on SX models). Both types have a heated rear window and a rear wash/wipe system.

Whichever type of rear door is fitted, the Doblò’s loading aperture is bigger than that of the Berlingo and Kangoo:

Fiat Doblò in UK…8

Stylistically, the rear of the Doblò is dominated by dramatic vertical light clusters that echo Punto styling. These are protected by black polypropylene casings that extend down to the rear bumper. This then wraps round either side of the vehicle, mirroring the design of the front bumper.

The luggage area loading height is extremely low (535mm), which is the same as that of the Kangoo and 32mm lower than that of the Berlingo:

Loading height

|Model |Deck height mm |

|Doblò |535 |

|Berlingo |567 |

|Kangoo |535 |

Dimensions

The superior carrying capacity and interior space of the Doblò stem mainly from the fact that it features larger dimensions than the Berlingo and Kangoo. In fact it is 5cm longer than the Berlingo, 6cm longer than the Kangoo and 5cm wider than the Kangoo:

|Model |Length mm |Width mm |

INTERIOR

Inside, functionality, practicality and comfort are the watchwords. The driver and four passengers will enjoy a well thought out, ergonomic, safe and relaxing interior.

Comfort

Driver and passenger comfort are of prime importance in an MPV, and in the Doblò this begins with interior space. Comfort is enhanced still further thanks to:

• An adjustable steering wheel

• Adjustable seat height

• The front seats being positioned at the optimum height for natural leg movement and easy entry

• The generous front door apertures, which also provide plenty of headroom

• Large rear side sliding doors – the largest in its class

• Excellent rear legroom

Visibility

Large windows and a raised driving position give the driver a good view of the road ahead and to both sides. Also, the well-sized control panel is incorporated into the dashboard central area, making it easily visible.

Dashboard

The instrument panel is similar to the Punto. The main instruments are all analogue, with white characters big enough to be easily seen on their black background. Warning lights are only visible when active and lit. At night, the control panel is illuminated in orange. Instrumentation comprises:

• Speedometer

• Rev counter (ELX only)

Fiat Doblò in UK…10

• Fuel gauge

• Water temperature gauge

• Odometer and trip meter

• Digital clock

• Trip computer (ELX only)

Trip computer

A trip computer is standard on Doblò ELX, providing the driver with information about the current journey on the control panel display:

• Distance travelled

• Distance that can be travelled with current fuel load

• Average speed

• Time of journey

• Average fuel consumption

This data can be accessed by pressing the Trip button and is shown on the control panel display in either imperial or metric figures. It remains on the display until the driver cancels it or requests different information.

Average speed

This shows the average speed of the journey to date. Maximum journey time is

99 hours 59 minutes.

Time travelled

Time travelled is measured from the start of a journey. Stopping the car stops the timer, but doesn’t reset it to zero. The counter resumes counting when the vehicle is restarted.

Fiat Doblò in UK …11

Fuel distance

According to the amount of fuel in the tank, and assuming that the journey continues with fuel consumption at the same rate, the computer calculates how far Doblò can go before refuelling. Fuel distance calculation starts when the journey begins.

Fuel distance is not displayed when the fuel left in the tank is at ‘reserve’ level or lower. At this stage, the driver is informed about the situation via the low fuel level warning light.

Average fuel consumption

This indicates average fuel consumption from the start of a journey.

Open door warning (ELX only)

The control panel features a warning light that shows if any of the doors are open.

Windscreen wipers

All models feature front windscreen wipers with ‘intelligent’ wash. There are two continuous speeds and one intermittent. In addition, there’s a rear windscreen wiper with continuous action and wash.

Intelligent wash function

Via this system, the water jet and windscreen wipers can be activated in a single movement. The wipers start half-a-second after the water jet is activated, and continue for three wipes following release of the control stalk.

Headlight height adjustment

The Doblò’s headlight height can be adjusted from the driver’s seat.

Interior lights

The Doblò features front courtesy lights with a timing sequence (see below) plus two map-reading lights. There is also a rear courtesy light and a luggage compartment light.

Fiat Doblò in UK …12

Timed lighting sequence

To make getting in and out of the vehicle easier, especially at night in dimly lit places, two timed lighting sequences have been developed.

Entry sequence

When one of the front doors is unlocked, with either key or remote control, the light is timed to come on for 15 seconds. When one of the front doors is then opened, the light stays on for three minutes, after which the ceiling light goes out and does not light up again until one of the doors is opened. If the door is closed during these three minutes, the light will then go off after seven seconds, or when the ignition is turned on, whichever is sooner.

Exit sequence

Having switched off the ignition, the light is on a 3-minute timer (unless more than two minutes elapse between shutting off the engine and removing the key). When one of the front doors is opened, the light stays on for a further three minutes, which avoids draining the battery if a door is left open.

Parking sensor

A reverse parking sensor is available as an optional extra on the Doblò ELX.

‘Follow-Me-Home’ headlights

‘Follow-Me-Home’ headlights are particularly useful at night if the Doblò has been parked in an unlit garage, or when the way to a house or building needs to be illuminated after the engine has been switched off.

Flashing the headlights within two minutes of turning off the engine activates this function. Each ‘flash’ adds 30 seconds to the time the lights remain on, up to a

maximum of five minutes, thus providing reassuring illumination as the driver exits a garage or walks up a path.

Fiat Doblò in UK…13

Independent electric windows

All Doblò versions feature electric front windows which can be opened or closed after the ignition has been turned off (up to two minutes). This is only possible when the doors are closed.

Central dashboard unit

Within the central console, key switches are grouped round the hazard-warning switch in a convenient and readily accessible position. These include switches for the heated rear window, front foglamps, rear foglight and electric windows. Either side of this unit there are two air vents, and below these are the ventilation controls.

There is then a non-slip oddment compartment on the tunnel.

Stereo radio cassette/CD player

Within easy reach of the driver, the sound system is housed in a binnacle above the central dashboard unit.

There are two types available on the Doblò: the standard stereo radio cassette or the optional stereo radio CD player. Both have been developed in collaboration with Blaupunkt.

These stereos feature two anti-theft systems:

• On the cassette radio, the system has a four-digit code which is requested every time the battery is disconnected.

• On the CD radio, the system has a communication protocol with the body computer’s control unit. When the stereo is fitted to another car, with no body computer, it won’t work because it doesn’t recognise the control unit with which it is meant to communicate.

Fiat Doblò in UK…14

The units also have an automatic ON/OFF, which means that they can be left on for up to 20 minutes after the engine has been turned off. Then they turn themselves off automatically to avoid draining the battery.

The stereo radio CD player features speed volume control, whereby the volume automatically increases and decreases along with engine speed.

The rear seats can be folded down and stored away for maximum space and interior flexibility. On SX versions, the rear seats fold down as a complete unit. On the ELX, the rear seats are split 60:40 (optional on SX versions).

The seats are upholstered in soft yet hardwearing cloth, and are colour co-ordinated to match the exterior.

Acoustic comfort

Low noise levels inside the cab improve both on-board comfort and preventative safety. The driver can concentrate better and stress is thus reduced. Fiat’s acoustic

Fiat Doblò in UK…17

engineers have worked hard on the Doblò to contain engine, road and wind noise, and keep vibration to a minimum.

Internal noise

Internal noise is particularly low because of work done on reducing outside turbulence, and vibration transmitted through the vehicle’s structure. The aerodynamic nature of the Doblò keeps wind noise to a minimum, while a special ‘soundproofing package’, comprising sound-deadening material reduces still further the noise that makes its way into the cabin.

Noise transmitted through the structure has been reduced by limiting vibration from various sources and by improving the body’s acoustic response. The particular areas targeted include:

• The engine

• Internal balancing (thus less vibration generated)

• Engine mountings

• Stiffened support brackets and revised bushes

• New air filter and venturi on the petrol engine

• New elements that improve the aspiration of the diesel engine

• The exhaust system

• Repositioning the catalytic converter

• A new flexible section that absorbs engine vibration

• New elasticised mountings

• The bodyshell

• Enhanced rigidity

• Better soundproofing

• Better connections with vibrating components

Fiat Doblò in UK…18

• Suspension system

• Shock absorbers with hydraulic stops, which decrease vibration on rough roads

• New larger top bushes (upper suspension body attachments) with rigid body connections

• Ferrule body connections on the rear suspension, which guarantee good road vibration filtration

The Doblò easily complies with the target of 74 dB(A), the EC noise pollution limit.

Ventilation system

Doblò SX models feature a highly efficient ventilation system with a four-speed fan. Aside from the vents that feed air to the windscreen and side windows for demisting purposes, there are four other adjustable ones mounted in the dashboard, and further openings below that bring warm or cool air to occupants’ feet.

In addition, as part of the ventilation system there’s air recirculation, which isolates the cabin from external pollution. When travelling through smoky tunnels or polluted cities, the air recirculation function prevents outside air from entering the vehicle.

Manual climate control

Doblò ELX comes with manual climate control, which includes a pollen filter. This is an optional extra on SX models.

Load space

Doblò provides a class-leading volume of 3000 litres at the rear, with the rear seats down, which is 200 litres more than Berlingo and 400 more than Kangoo.

Fiat Doblò in UK…19

Maximum load volume with rear seats down

|Model |Volume (litres) |

|Doblò |3000 |

|Berlingo |2800 |

|Kangoo |2600 |

With the rear seats in place, Doblò also provides the best luggage space in its class – 750 litres. That’s 126 litres more than Berlingo and 150 litres more than Kangoo. And in comparison with a normal C segment hatchback, that’s twice the load capacity of a Ford Focus. Put another way, it is possible for a family of five to drive off with all their mountain bikes loaded in the back.

Maximum load volume with rear seats up

|Model |Volume (litres) |

|Doblò |750 |

|Berlingo |624 |

|Kangoo |600 |

A load capacity of more than 200kg in the rear means the Doblò can accommodate five individuals’ large suitcases, each weighing 40kgs.

CONNECT Satellite Navigation/Carphone/Infotelematic System

Customers will soon be able to specify Doblò with CONNECT in various levels as an optional extra. Functions such as the satellite navigation system, dual band hands-free GSM carphone available with voice activation, voice recorder, trip computer and audio controls can be operated via a dashboard-mounted monitor.

At present, certain aspects of the UK system are still in development and are anticipated to become available later this year. In summary, there will be three levels to choose from:

POWER AND PERFORMANCE

Doblò comes with two engine options – petrol and diesel. These engines are reliable and cheap to run.

The principal criteria followed in their development were those of fuel consumption, performance and ecological acceptability. With regard to the environment, both engines satisfy the EEC Phase 3 emissions requirements.

FIRE 1242cc 8V engine

One of the objectives in this engine’s design was to maximise torque at low speed in order to make urban driving as easy as possible, and to minimise fuel consumption. As a result, it benefits from new inlet pipes, camshaft and an active pinking sensor.

Reduced fuel consumption comes about as a result of lighter components – for example, the inlet manifold is made entirely from a polymer and glassfibre material. On-board comfort has been improved, thanks to reductions in vibration and noise emanating from the engine.

Respect for the environment has also been a guiding force in the development of this engine: the exhaust now features a close coupled catalytic converter, which reduces emissions when the engine is still warming up. A non-return fuel feed system, which eliminates the recirculation of fuel in the tank and reduces vapour formation, also minimises atmospheric pollution.

To reach fuel consumption objectives and maintain performance at the same time, the engine features a Weber electronic multipoint injection system – a system previously reserved for higher segment models.

European On Board Diagnosis (EOBD)

In line with EEC regulations, EOBD is a diagnostic apparatus that detects unacceptable emissions levels and signals this on the instrument panel so that the driver can take appropriate measures. It also communicates with the vehicle’s central computer, whose socket links-up with workshop diagnostic equipment, so that technicians are provided with a comprehensive fault and error code list.

In terms of its emissions control function, EOBD controls the following:

• Catalytic converter (that neutralises pollutants)

• Lambda sensors that analyse the composition of exhaust gases and then relay this information to the control unit. This then regulates the engine’s air/fuel ratio.

• Combustion. This must always be complete because if an unburnt fuel molecule reaches the exhaust, it can cause a misfire, which may damage the catalytic converter.

EOBD is connected directly to the CPU’s (central processing unit) memory. It is via this that the error codes are obtained – i.e. any diagnosable malfunctions that might

Fiat Doblò in UK…25

have occurred. Thus, connecting the vehicle up to a single plug provides a technician with an immediate, thorough and reliable diagnosis.

Fuel tank

The fuel tank capacity is 60 litres (all versions).

Fiat Doblò in UK…26

TRANSMISSION

Both the Doblò’s petrol and diesel engines are mated to Fiat’s C513 manual gearbox. All gear ratios have been calculated according to the nature of the vehicle, and its operation is particularly smooth and slick. Positioning the gearstick on the dashboard, in line with the steering wheel, brings advantages in terms of ergonomics, ease of operation and additional cabin space. It also makes changing gear 10% faster.

The C513 transmission now benefits from new Borg Warner synchromesh on all forward gears, plus better and easier systems for engaging first, second and reverse gears. It is also quieter and produces less vibration.

SUSPENSION

Given the wide range of tasks demanded of the Doblò, its suspension has been designed to cope with all sorts of road surfaces and terrains. It has been specifically engineered to absorb bumps from the road, reduce lateral roll and forward pitch, while at the same time ensuring maximum adherence of the wheels to the ground.

Front suspension

The front suspension comprises MacPherson struts, with coil springs, a high resistance steel crossmember that’s designed to support heavy loads, and double-acting hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers.

Rear suspension

The rear suspension comprises a rigid axle and leaf springs.

This simple design, which is robust and easy to maintain, optimises rear suspension behaviour according to the vehicle’s use, especially when the vehicle is carrying a heavy load or one that is unevenly distributed.

By using particularly strong suspension components (leaf springs, shock absorbers, body attachments, etc.) Doblò handles just as well fully laden as it does when it’s empty.

BRAKES

Doblò features a particularly effective braking system that comprises:

• 257mm ventilated discs at the front

• 228mm drum brakes at the rear

Bosch 5.3 four-sensor ABS, with integral EBD (Electronic Braking Distribution) is an optional extra on SX and ELX models. EBD automatically apportions braking effort between front and rear wheels according to the way the vehicle is loaded.

Any problem is signalled on the dashboard by an ABS warning light. Any problem with the EBD is signalled by the simultaneous illumination of the ABS warning light and the brake warning light.

The brakes work on a diagonally split safety circuit, which ensures that in the unlikely event of fluid loss in one circuit, there will be an effective and balanced braking effect via the other one, acting on one front wheel and the diagonally opposite rear wheel.

STEERING

Power steering is standard on all Doblò versions.

The steering rack is particularly quick, at just 2.2 turns lock-to-lock, and the turning circle is just 10.5 metres (all versions).

SAFETY

When asked what they look for in an MPV, customers rank safety among the most important features. They want a vehicle that’s solid and feels safe, one that’s going to keep them out of trouble but also protect them if an accident actually occurs. So when Fiat’s designers and engineers set out to create the Doblò, safety was at the top of the agenda – preventative safety, active safety and passive safety.

Preventative safety

This refers to those aspects of the vehicle that inspire confidence and well-being in the driver, promoting alertness and the instant ability to cope with any situation.

Doblò drivers are kept comfortable by the adjustable seats, the carefully considered driving position and the smooth ride. This reduces stress levels, which in turn aids alertness – thus contributing to a situation in which accidents are actually prevented from happening.

The interior of the cabin is also light and airy, well heated and ventilated, inherently quiet and all controls are ergonomically positioned for quick and easy use – an important consideration in an emergency situation, especially after dark. Excellent visibility and good lighting play their part here, as well.

Active safety

This refers to characteristics and features that will actively prevent an accident from happening.

The key elements in Doblò’s active safety are its suspension system, its responsive engines and precise steering. Then, of course, there’s the optional ABS with EBD – a feature that can contribute to keeping a driver out of trouble and then come swiftly into play in the event of a dangerous situation arising.

Passive safety

Passive safety features relate to those that will minimise the effects of an accident, should it occur.

Built into Doblò’s bodywork are special crumple zones that are designed to collapse in a controlled manner and absorb the force of any impact from any direction. Consequently, at certain points it is reinforced: where the bonnet restraining hooks are located; in the dashboard; along the floorpan; and in the roof.

Firmly attached to the body, the doors contribute significantly to protection from both front and lateral impacts. The geometry, strength and positioning of the door locks prevent them from opening accidentally during a collision and, at the same time, remain easy to open after an accident. They also offer protection from lateral impacts, thanks to tubular anti-intrusion bars.

Doblò benefits from an extremely strong body. Its torsional rigidity is

111,000 daNm/radian.

Crash testing

Numerous tests were carried out in the Fiat Safety Centre at Orbassano – even harsher than those undertaken by European NCAP and the American Std. 208.

Crash tests included monitoring the behaviour of the car during front and lateral impacts at 40 mph and 30 mph respectively. In both these tests, Doblò performed extremely well.

To assess possible damage from low speed collisions, an additional series of special tests have been carried out. This is because in many European markets (primarily Germany and UK) insurance premiums are set using a rating applied by the insurers. This rating is based on the amount of damage from certain types of collision, average repair costs and the statistical frequency of accidents.

Doblò performed very well in these tests, and is in one of the UK’s lowest insurance brackets.

PASSIVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Airbags

Doblò features a driver’s airbag and front passenger airbag as standard. Front side airbags are an optional extra on the ELX. The airbags are made from 6/6 nylon and are inflated by inert, non-toxic argon gas. A diagnostic check system constantly monitors all components and electronic systems relating to the airbags, so as to prevent accidental inflation.

The driver’s airbag is located in the steering wheel and has a capacity of 42 litres.

The front passenger airbag has a capacity of 90 litres and can be deactivated by inserting the ignition key in a special lock at the extreme left-hand side of the facia.

The optional 10 litre side airbags are housed in the two seat backs, so no matter what position the seats are in, they will always be in the optimum position to protect the occupant in the case of side-on impacts (which account for 23% of collisions).

By the end of this year, customers will have the option of Smart 2 airbags. With Smart 2, the airbag control unit identifies the severity of an accident, the position of

the occupant, if they are belted in or not, and therefore decides the timing and force of (dual stage) airbag inflation. All this happens in less than a blink of an eye.

Head restraints

SX versions feature two front and two rear adjustable head restraints as standard.

The ELX features three adjustable head restraints at the rear. The third is available as an optional extra on the SX.

Seatbelts

SX models feature four, 3-point inertia reel seatbelts and a fifth, 2-point static lap belt for the centre rear seat.

The ELX has five 3-point inertia reel seatbelts.

Front seatbelts are height-adjustable. The inertia reel system, with pyrotechnic pre-tensioners and load limiters, is particularly efficient and designed to work in conjunction with the airbag.

When an impact is detected (above a certain magnitude) the pyrotechnic pre-tensioner activates and reels in the seatbelt so that it restrains the seat occupant and allows the airbag to inflate properly. At the same time, a load limiter prevents the seatbelt from causing any harm.

FPS (Fire Prevention System)

Doblò features a fully integrated fire prevention system comprising:

• An inertia switch

• A fuel-flow stop valve on the delivery line

• A fuel-flow stop valve on the return line

• Aluminium heat shield on the underbody

• A fuel cap valve to prevent leakage in rollovers

• Flame-retardant cabin upholstery

• A highly flame-resistant fuel tank

Steering column

Frontal collisions, particularly at high speed, can cause the steering column to be forced up into the cab. To either prevent this from happening, or minimise its impact, Doblò has a telescopic lower column structure. To protect the driver’s legs from

Fiat Doblò in UK…34

impacts against the steering column, all lower parts of the dash conceal energy absorbing elements.

Steering wheel

The steering wheel is constructed of soft materials and also has an energy absorber, which reduces the likelihood of injury in the event of contact with the driver.

Bumpers

The polypropylene-based bumpers serve to absorb the force of minor impacts.

Dashboard

All dashboard surfaces are smooth and rounded, with no sharp corners or projections. It is also well padded and constructed from soft materials.

Doors

Solidly attached to the body, the doors have an especially rigid structure, being reinforced by lateral bars and lower tubing to minimise both head-on and side-on impacts. Anti-burst locks prevent the doors from opening during an accident and, at the same time, ensure that they are easy to open afterwards.

Seats

At the leading edge of the seats is an upward tilting ‘ramp’ and stiff transverse ridges that act as an ‘anti-submarining device’ – preventing the occupant’s body from sliding out from under the seatbelt.

Fuel tank

The fuel tank is specially insulated against fire and is not affected by low temperatures – down to minus 40° Centigrade. It is designed to resist splitting in a major collision.

Pedestrian safety features

‘Soft’ front bumpers, collapsible door mirrors, smooth surfaces and no sharp corners all serve to protect pedestrians and cyclists in the event of contact.

SECURITY

Doblò’s security package includes:

Fiat CODE II engine immobiliser

This anti-theft system prevents Doblò from being started by immobilising the engine management system. The ignition key contains a transponder that transmits a secret code to the engine’s control unit whenever it’s switched on. This cannot be ‘cracked’ by a scanner because it changes every time it’s used.

Remote central locking

Remote control central locking is standard on all models. This works on all five doors.

The ignition unit

This is installed by means of screws with pre-set breaking points. When subjected to force, the screws break and the unit become unusable.

Window etching

All windows are etched with the vehicle’s chassis number and logged with the National Vehicle Security Register.

Stereo radio cassette/CD player

The stereo radio cassette or CD player have special security systems.

Load bay cover

A strong, rigid load bay cover conceals valuables from prying eyes and doubles as a shelf. The glovebox is lockable.

QUALITY AND RELIABILITY

Doblò’s bodyshell is manufactured for long term durability and all mechanical parts carry comprehensive guarantees. Quality was built into it from the start and applied right through the manufacturing process:

• CAD/CAM techniques at the design stage eliminated or strengthened those areas of possible stress and long term fatigue.

• Robotised welding and computer checking of the dashboard assembly enhance reliability.

• A sophisticated, computerised system of bolt tightening ensures precisely the correct amount of torque is applied.

• In many cases units are sub-assembled off-line and then fitted in place by robots.

• State-of-the-art anti-corrosion treatment includes:

• The entire bodywork consisting of zinc galvanised steel

• Some key exposed areas zinc-coated to a depth of 20 microns

• Box sections injected with wax-based oil to prevent internal corrosion

• The entire bodyshell immersed in electro-cataphoretic dip

• Plastic front wheelarch liners to prevent stone chipping and build-up of corrosive mud, snow and salt deposits

As a result of these processes, Doblò comes complete with:

• A three year mechanical warranty

• A 36 month paintwork guarantee

• An eight year corrosion perforation warranty

ECOLOGY

Fiat has always taken environmental considerations seriously when producing vehicles – both in the manufacturing process and in the way they operate on the roads. Furthermore, ever aware of the need for conservation of resources, a programme of recyclability in Italy has been developed to maximise the usefulness of the Doblò’s components at the end of the vehicle’s life.

Ecology

• 1.2 SX engine runs on 95 octane lead-free petrol and channels exhaust gases through a three-way catalytic converter with lambda sensor to neutralise noxious elements.

• Asbestos-based friction materials have been eliminated from brakes and clutches.

• Cadmium has been eliminated from plastic dyes and as a coating for nuts and bolts.

• CFCs have been eliminated from foam padding and from the air conditioning system.

• Aromatic solvents, fluoride and formaldehydes have all been eliminated from the manufacturing process.

• A vapour-check device in the fuel tank prevents vapour escaping into the atmosphere.

• Decibel reduction and sound deadening systems keep noise pollution to a minimum.
