Two transportation grants have been presented to K-12 school groups to assist with field-trip transportation costs to Michigan attractions; one scholarship has been awarded to a high school graduate attending a Michigan institute of higher learning to study in the field of tourism and hospitality.Science teacher Andrew Urquhart with Kalkaska High School received a $250 transportation grant to help take students in his Geology of the National Parks course to the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore in May 2014.“The students spend a semester covering all of the major national parks in the national park system,” Urquhart said. “Many of the students in our geology course have never had the opportunity to visit Sleeping Bear, so this simple one-day tour is very special to them. The students get to see the amazing scenery Sleeping Bear has to offer while getting a free, geologic dream tour of all the stops most visitors never notice or even get to see.”Dr. Leonard Seawood, superintendent of Benton Harbor Area Schools, received a $250 transportation grant to help take fourth-grade students to the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids in September 2013.“Fourth-grade students are expected to learn social studies standards by examining fundamental concepts in government and civics through the lens of Michigan history and the United States,” Seawood said. “The Gerald R. Ford Museum experience will enhance learning by providing students with the opportunity to develop social understanding and civic efficacy on Michigan.”Shannon Shabluk, daughter of Mike and Lisa Shabluk of Thomas Township, received a $500 scholarship to study culinary arts at Baker College of Muskegon. Shabluk is a graduate of Nouvel Catholic Central High School in Saginaw.“Baking and pastry is my passion,” Shabluk said. “I hope to work toward owning and managing my own bakery.”The Circle Michigan Foundation was formed in 2012 by Circle Michigan to serve Michigan schools and students through the annual award of K-12 field-trip transportation grants and higher-education tourism and hospitality scholarships. The application deadline for the next grant/scholarship cycle is June 30, 2014.
