FORMING QUESTIONS IN FRENCH

I. WITH INTONATION

II. WITH EST-CE QUE

Tu as un v?lo ? Vous ?tes fran?ais ? Elle vend des ordinateurs ? Ils habitent ? Qu?bec ?

Est-ce que tu as un v?lo ? Est-ce que vous ?tes fran?ais ? Est-ce qu'elle vend des ordinateurs ? Est-ce qu'ils habitent ? Qu?bec ?

III. WITH INVERSION

As-tu un v?lo ? ?tes-vous fran?ais ? Vend-elle des ordinateurs ? Habitent-t-ils ? Qu?bec ?

Note that with inversion the subject pronoun is inverted. In other words the order is reversed between the subject and the verb.

Some things to remember with inversion: You must use a hyphen to join the subject and verb. You will always hear and pronounce the sound "t" between the verb and subject. To make the "t" sound if you have the il/elle/on-form of the verb after a vowel, you actually insert the letter -t- between the verb and the pronoun.

Il a un job Elle travaille On habite ? Provo

A-t-il un job ? Travaille-t-elle beaucoup ? Habite-t-on longtemps ? Provo ?

If you add the interrogative expressions they will go in front of the verb:

O? habites-tu? Quand travaille-t-il? Avec qui d?nez-vous ce soir ? Pourquoi sont-ils en retard ? Qui aime-t-elle ? Que fais-tu ?

Now that you know the ways, let's make a sondage!

You are a French journalist researching an article on how American teenagers help out at home. Interview at least FIVE of your classmates and find out the answers to TEN of your questions. Be sure to use inversion when making your questions. Here are some possible things to find out:

how many do the dishes how many cook how many do the food shopping
