Unit? 2A Grammar Notes Forming Questions

? The simplest way to form a question in French is to put a question mark at the end of a statement. This method is considered informal.

? To convey this in spoken French, your voice needs to rise up in pitch. example: Do you (familiar) like French class? = Tu aimes le cours de fran?ais?

? A 2nd way is to put estce que/qu' directly before a statement. This method is considered more formal.

example: Do you (formal) speak French? = Estce que vous parlez fran?ais?

? A 3rd way is to put d'accord (OK?) or n'estce pas (isn't that right?) at the end of a statement.

examples: We're arriving at 3:00, OK? = Nous arrivons ? trois heures, d'accord? She's singing at noon, isn't that right? = Elle chante ? midi, n'estce pas?

? A 4th way is to invert the word order by placing the verb first and the subject after and putting a hyphen between them. Inversion is considered more formal.

example: Do you (formal) speak French? = Parlezvous fran?ais?

? With inversion, if the verb ends in a vowel and the subject pronoun is il, elle, or on, t is placed between the verb and the subject pronoun.

example: Does she speak French? = Parletelle fran?ais?

? If the subject of the verb is a noun, put the noun at the beginning, then invert the verb and the subject pronoun that would correspond to the noun.

examples: Does the teacher speak English? = Le prof parletil anglais? Does Marie dance? = Marie dansetelle?

? il y a = there is, there are ? c'est = it is

? The inverted form of il y a is y atil (is there?, are there?). ? The inverted form of c'est is estce (is it?). examples: Is there a flag in the classroom? = Y atil un drapeau dans la salle de classe? Is it a book? = Estce un livre?
