COURSE OBJECTIVES

Elementary Spanish I is a course that allows beginning language learners to hear Spanish and experience its cultural diversity while incorporating technology to enhance language skills. The text, Aventuras, embraces a communicative approach, incorporates culture, through community and connections, and introduces students to authentic language material (realia) and literary pieces from various Spanish speaking countries.

All four skills involved in learning a foreign language (listening, speaking, reading and writing) will be integrated into the course work and evaluations. The average student who completes SPN 1121 can expect to (1) understand most Spanish spoken at a slower than normal pace and some Spanish spoken at a normal pace; (2) answer and ask questions on a variety of everyday topics, describe people and places, and narrate mostly in the present tense and some in the past tense; and (3) read almost any simple Spanish text.

This semester, we will focus on the following linguistic themes:

Lección 1: greetings, farewells, expressions of courtesy, identifying yourself and others, and telling time.

Lección 2: words related to people, places and classes at the university

Lección 3: words related to family and professions

Lección 4: pastimes and sports; places in the city

The grammatical scope is:

Lección 1: nouns and articles, numbers 0-30, present tense, ser, subject pronouns, telling time

Lección 2: present tense –ar verbs, forming questions, estar, and numbers 31-100

Lección 3: descriptive adjectives, possessive adjectives, present tense of –er/ir verbs, tener and venir

Lección 4: ir, stem changing verbs, verbs with irregular yo forms

The cultural focus includes:

Lección 1: greetings: verbal and non verbal

Lección 2: choosing a major, studying in Hispanic countries

Lección 3: the Hispanic concept of family

Lección 4: soccer

SPECIAL NOTE: This is an online course. Students are expected to be able to send and receive email, and to send and open attachments. Student must be able to use an online voice board tool, and complete exercises in Vista Supersite. (online learning platform).

VISTA HIGHER LEARNING SUPERSITE PLATFORM

Vista Higher Learning Supersite Website:

Vista Higher Learning Student Support

Call: 800 248-2813

Help tab on Supersite contains loads of tutorials and FAQ.

ASSIGNMENT ATTEMPTS:

Most assignments have UNLIMITED attempts with the exception of the oral quiz, which is only 1. Accent marks are a part of the language and will be counted. Please be careful when spelling out words. Be sure to use words from the text. I realize there are many synonyms in Spanish based on regionalisms, but the Supersite will expect you to use vocabulary from the text.

On your student calendar, you will see an average amount of work assigned. Please DO NOT wait until the last minute to complete these Supersite activities. They are designed to pace yourself through the Lección and prepare you for the exam.

VISTA HIGHER LEARNING CALENDAR

There is a tab for you to see the number of assignments due on the Supersite and their due dates. It will also give you the average amount of time to complete them. Remember, this is to complete them, not learn the material. Do not wait until the last minute to complete these assignments. I will not accept procrastination as an excuse. Also, if your computer is unable to handle the Vista Supersite, you must find a computer on one of our IRSC campuses.

WEEK TO WEEK DOCUMENT (FOR PACING)

I also suggest you use the Week to week assignment document found on Blackboard to pace yourself.

VISTA SUPERSITE FORMAT

• Preparación: vocabulary and tutorials, listening and written practice exercises, games from vtext, workbook and labmanual.

• Aventuras: fotonovela, video practice activities from v text and videomanual

• Cultura: reading and/or video followed by practice activities

• Gramática: tutorials by topic (there are 4 in each lecciٕón) followed by practice activities from vtext, workbook, labmanual

• Lectura: reading followed by practice activities

• Vocabulario: tutorials and flash cards

• Repaso: practice quizzes for vocabulary and grammar

Note: in most cases, all areas of the Supersite will be assigned, but depending upon the complexity of the lección, not all lecturas will be assigned. Feel free to read those on your own as they provide valuable “comprehensible input” which will lead to “comprehensible output” (Krashen’s theory of I +1)

ORAL ASSESSMENTS ON Supersite (25% OF GRADE)

There will be 4 oral quizzes. Each is assigned on the Supersite Voiceboard. You are to follow the directions on the exercise. I have provided sample answers and basic instruction relating to the lexical and grammatical concepts being assessed. If you have any questions, please contact me BEFORE the due date. It should be your voice on the recording and the recording should be free from background noise (TV, dogs barking, kids crying, etc).

TO RECEIVE YOUR GRADE ON YOUR ORAL QUIZ:

1. Please allow me 48-72 hours to grade, once the deadline has passed and depending upon the number of classmates. There will be specific oral feedback given to each student for each quiz. This is very important for you to listen to so you can demonstrate improvement on each quiz.

2. I will be using a rubric to grade the oral recording part. Rubric is located on our Blackboard homepage.

Pre/POST SKILLS ASSESSMENT

Located on Angel, these pre/ post skills assessment are vital to the growth of our language program and in capturing data to assist with student success. The actual skills scores will be posted on Mariner in the Learning Outcomes column, but will not be calculated into your semester average. This is MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT!!!!! However, as an incentive to do well on this test, I will give 5 points for the first exam for completing the Pre Skills test and 5 points toward final exam for completing the Post skills assessment. Please do not use your text, answer the questions to the best of your ability. In Spanish I, your initial pre score should be relatively low, since technically you are a beginner. If you can max out the score on the pre skills test, then you should transfer to the next course (SPN 1121 or SPN 2220). As an incentive to do really well on the post skills test, students who improve their pre skills score by 20 points, will receive 10 points on the final.

You have 60 minutes and 1 attempt at this test.

The date this test will be available is:

Pre test : tba

Post Test: tba

ACADEMIC PROGRESS

I will send Reach Out! notices out to students who are in academic difficulty.

Reach Out!-Notices will be sent to students who are in danger of failing and/or who are not keeping up with coursework. Notices will be sent via regular mail or email. Please make sure your mailing address is current with the IRSC Mariner system. ALSO: Beginning Jan 2010, students will receive emails via their IRSC emails. If you have not activated your IRSC account, you must do so. Failure to activate your account may be critical to your academic progress if you can’t receive alerts and emails from me.

I will also post grades after each unit test on Blackboard’s grade book. Your Supersite grade book will only be accurate to reflect the Supersite activities. The test grades and averages after each test will be posted on Blackboard’s grade book.

Withdrawals:

The last day to withdraw Dec 4. Please contact me if you are considering a withdrawal. There are many strategies involved in learning a language and together we can identify the areas of deficiency and help you succeed in this course.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS:

Ms. Tempone is not obliged to accept any quizzes, online assignments or tests not completed during the time periods listed in the schedule. If an emergency should arise, please contact me BEFORE the assignment deadline and we can discuss options. Extensions will only be considered if and only if the student (not the parent in the case of dual enrollment students) contacts me within 48 hours of the assignment deadline. In the event this falls on a weekend, leave a message for me or email me. If I do give you an extension to any of the deadlines, in no case is that extension for more than one week beyond the dates listed. All extensions for exams will be taken on the Main Campus in the ASC Lab. Students who are granted extensions may be subject to point penalties depending upon the reason for the extension. Students may not be given more than one extension during a semester.

CHEATING:

All work completed should be that of the student. This includes the use of online translators. Students in violation will receive a zero for that assignment. Instructor reserves the right to refer this incident to the VP of Student Affairs for further disciplinary action.

CONTACTING ME THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER:

Students should only use Blackboard course email or my office voice mail (772 462 7704) to correspond with me. Do not use my IRSC email, as I need a paper trail of our correspondence, not to mention the email is self contained within our Course homepage. I check our course email frequently, but I do not check it on weekends. Even though you have 24/7 access to work on course materials, I am not available 24/7 for instruction. Please allow at least 24 hours for a response.

Please read all emails and attachments that I send.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

1. Maintain contact with me. Call me if you are experiencing difficulty; don’t wait. Call or email me at the first sign of difficulty. Oftentimes, I can make some suggestions that will help. My goal is for each and every one of you to succeed.

2. Complete all Supersite Activities. Don’t cut corners. Students in a live class spend up to 3 hours in class and then complete outside class assignments. Taking an Internet course is no easier than attending a live class. You should spend no less than 1-2 hours per day on your course work.

3. Read my emails; utilize course resources such as Grammar Tutorials, flash cards and practice quizzes.

4. Don’t procrastinate. Keep up with the work. Don’t wait until the last minute for tests/oral quizzes.

OVERVIEW OF ASSIGNMENTS
