The Role of Leaders in Supporting a Social Emotional Learning and Substance Misuse Prevention Program—2 hours.

This brief session by an international LifeSkills Training© (LST) Master Trainer will enable Administrators to make decisions about a Social Emotional Learning and Substance Use Prevention Program for elementary and/or middle school classrooms. Highlights of the session include the transferable positive behavior skills taught by the evidence-based LST program, and the prevention and education-oriented outcomes. As long as funding allows, subsequent instructor certification training for your choice of future instructors, curriculum, and student supplies are offered at no charge by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. A BSAS contractor, Social Science Research and Evaluation (SSRE), will send the Certified Instructors a short yearly confidential survey to inform future planning and support.

Combined Elementary and/or Middle School Training Options—1 day

Research has shown that when the LifeSkills Training© Program is offered to elementary and/or middle school students, their rates of substance misuse are lower, and these encouraging outcomes persist as they get older. Recent literature has documented decreased prescription drug misuse rates when it is implemented with fidelity in middle school.

LifeSkills Training© Certification Training Description for Grades 3-6

LST consists of a series of class sessions in the 3rd or 4th grade, ideally followed by another series in the 2 subsequent grades. Each grade level program can also be offered independently. The instructors in the daylong training will be certified to deliver the entire program and can order supplies for any grade(s) 3-9 as funding allows.

LifeSkills Training© Certification Training Description for Grades 6-9

LST consists of a series of class sessions in the 6th or 7th grade, ideally followed by a shorter series of booster sessions in the 2 subsequent grades. Trained instructors will be offered curriculum for the 6th-7th grade, and can order all materials for the next 2 grades as funding allows. Anecdotal feedback indicates that teachers like the social/emotional learning that LST brings to the classroom, and they inspire their colleagues to be trained. The instructors’ training, curriculum, and student supplies are offered at no charge.

More information will be available at the Introduction Sessions and/or Trainings, or you can contact Kathleen.Herr-Zaya@state.ma.us or 617-624-5143.
