YOUTH BASKETBALL RULES

3rd-8th Grades Boys

1) LEAGUES: Boys in grades 3rd-8th are eligible.

Players are placed in leagues by grade.

2) THE BALL: 3rd – 6th grade will use an intermediate size (28.5) ball.

7th & 8th grade will use a full size ball.

3) BASKET: All Players will shoot at a 10-foot basket.

4) TIME REGULATION: Each game will consist of two (2) twenty (20) minute

halves. There will be a three (3) minute break between halves. The clock will stop during the last two (2) minutes of the game for all violations such as free throws (5-8 grade), jump balls and out-of-bounds.

The game will be stopped for substitutions at the five (5), ten (10) and fifteen (15) minute mark of each half.

5) TIME OUTS: Each team is allowed two (2) per half. They may not be

carried over to the next half.

6) DEFENSE: Man-to-Man Defense ONLY!

Help defense and switching are legal.

A) 3rd grade: No stealing off the dribble.

B) 4th grade & up: May steal the ball off the dribble.

7) FREE THROWS / Free throws will be shot for 5th – 8th grade games on FOULS shooting fouls or bonus situations (7 team fouls in a half).

3rd and 4th Grade: No Free Throws will be shot. 2 points will be awarded for shooting fouls and bonus situations.

7th & 8th grade players will foul out at 5 individual fouls.

8) FAST BREAK & PRESSING: Grades 3 and 4 are not allowed to press at all. They

are also not allowed to fast break.

Grades 5-6 may press and fast break in the last five (5) minutes of each half only.

5th and 6th grade may fast break if a defender steals the ball near or outside the three point line.

Grades 7-8 may press or fast break at any time.

a) A team will be considered to be presssing when any defender is in the back

court as the offense attempts to advance the ball up court.

b) A team will be considered to be on a fast break when the offensive pattern has begun before all defensive players are in the fore court.

c) Pressing is not allowed when a team has a ten (10) point lead or more.

9) LANE VIOLATIONS: 3rd and 4th graders will be allowed five (5) seconds in the

lane. Grades 5-8 will only be allowed three (3)

seconds in the lane.

10) PLAYER PARTICIPATION: (Coaches Responsibility)

a) Each Coach must assign a player a number for the substitution system. (Numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, will start your first game of the season).

b) On each substitution the next five players on the rotation should be put into the game.

c) If there is an injury or a player does not show for the game, the coach must skip the missing players number and substitute the next player in the rotation.

d) The rotation will carry over to the next game. (So if you ended last weeks game with player number 2 players number 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 should start the next game.

11) ALL OTHER RULES FOLLOW THE WIAA REGULATIONS.
