The Adult Education Department's Literacy Center Volunteers

In an Op-Ed piece in the February 6, 2003 edition of the New York Times, Bob Herbert wrote that there are over 200,000 undereducated, jobless young adults in New York City. They are finding it difficult to achieve a basic livelihood, in large part, due to their lack of "standard" educational credentials. They are among the growing number of adults in our city who do not have basic reading and writing skills, much less a high school diploma. Here at Thirteen, a proud few are determined to extend a helping hand. Strong, persistent and goal-oriented, these individuals have committed themselves to vigorously fighting the growing epidemic of inadequate education. They are the elite team of volunteers from Thirteen/WNET's Adult Education Department.

Thirteen's volunteers include Native Americans, Asians and Hispanic immigrants. Their drive to help improve the lives of others is abundantly demonstrated in their

hard work. One of our important tasks is to extend Thirteen's resources to an inquiring population. The volunteers work tirelessly to provide information and to assist people who contact us.

Our volunteers include Lilia Revueltas, who recently suffered a mild stroke. Despite her ordeal, Mrs. Revueltas is again servicing our GED in Spanish and Learn to Read students on Fridays. On Mondays and Tuesdays, Helena Bruder and Aura Mansilla help adults who inquire about GED Connection, GED in Spanish, and Learn to Read programs. On Wednesdays, Jorge de Solo, along with his team partner, Florence Dober, assists adult students requesting information. Last but not least, Hank Freyman volunteers his services on Thursdays. As do all our volunteers, Mr. Freyman understands that quality education will help our communities flourish.

On Tuesday, June 24, 2003, Thirteen's Adult Education Department, in partnership with the Office of Adult and Continuing Education of New York City's Department of Education, The City University of New York, and other partners showcased student achievement with special recognition for recent GED graduates.

One hundred seventy-five guests attended Thirteen/WNET New York's Annual GED Graduation and Student Recognition Ceremony in our broadcast studio. Our GED graduates wore caps and gowns, and the day was filled with excitement!

There were several moving and inspiring student testimonials and performances. The distinguished speakers included Brenda Blackmon, UPN 9 News; Maurice DuBois, NBC's Today in New York; and Thirteen/WNET New York's Rafael Pi Roman, Host of Inside Trenton and Thirteen's News Hour.

Our student guests were from a variety of adult education agencies, alternative high schools, library-based adult education programs, ESL programs, and community based organizations. Many students were from the Office of Adult and Continuing Education (Region 4) of the New York City Department of Education.

Our guests were overwhelmingly positive about the GED Graduation and Student Recognition Ceremony. Many described the entire day as very rewarding.

Special accolades to all those who helped to make this day a huge success ?perhaps the best GED Graduation and Student Recognition Ceremony in the department's history.
