What exactly is a homeschool portfolio?
A homeschool portfolio is a collection of your child's academic work and is created to provide a detailed record of what your child has learned. It should show proof that your child is learning adequately, mastering concepts, and showing progress.
The first step in knowing what to include in a homeschool portfolio is finding out what your state's homeschool requirements are. Once you know, you'll be able to determine how detailed your homeschool portfolio should be. Note that some states do not require a homeschool portfolio. However, it's still a good idea to keep one, especially when your child enters high school and he or she plans on attending college.
A solid homeschool portfolio can include a number of different things, including, but not limited to:
Reports/ report cards Attendance record Book logs Worksheets Writing assignments such as essays, book reports Tests/assessments List of curricula / materials used Photos of projects, experiments, and educational field trips

10 Tips for Organizing a Homeschool Portfolio
1. Keep a homeschool portfolio for each child and each academic year.
2. Use a 3-ring binder with tabs for different subjects and assignments (book reports, tests, etc).
3. Start with items pertaining to your state's required subjects; then, add on anything else from extracurricular activities, field trips, projects, etc.
4. Make sure all items are dated and kept in chronological order.
5. PIck a few assignments from each subject and make sure they are spread out throughout the year (beginning, middle, and end).
6. Use clear page protectors to prevent ripping and any other damage.
7. Go through the binder every month and store as you go.
8. Keep a separate section for awards and certificates.
9. Include an attendance sheet. Some states have a required number of school days that must be met each year.
10. Print your child's Time4Learning reports on a regular basis. There are various ones to choose from: attendance, duration, and student score. You can search within the last week, month or by entering a date range.
