Crested Butte Music Festival Launches SoundTrack Program for Youth

Free tickets to performances & musical encounters new for this season

CRESTED BUTTE, Colo. (May 26, 2015) – This summer, Crested Butte Music Festival (CBMF) is launching SoundTrack, a new initiative to bring the Festival’s dynamic music programs to local and visiting youth and their families. There are two main components to SoundTrack: musical encounters and live performances.

“Building on the Festival’s core mission to make music accessible to a wide-ranging audience, SoundTrack is offering a number of informal, interactive listening and learning experiences for children,” says Festival Director Alexander Scheirle.

Musical encounters are relaxed, interactive explorations of music led by festival performers and staff. For example, youth ages 2 – 18 (divided by age group) will be introduced to the instruments of the orchestra by guest violinist Charles Yang and can try out an instrument on July 8 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. A limited number of 30-minute, private introductory lessons will be available immediately after. Youth ages 7 – 18 also can take a rare, behind-the-scenes look at opera during the rehearsal of Don Pasquale and take part in an interactive talk with CBMF Music Director of Opera David Stern on July 17 from 12:30 – 1:15 p.m. All musical encounters events are free, but registration is required.

A limited number of free tickets for youth ages 6 to 18 are available to select live performances, including contemporary music, symphony, chamber, opera and gypsy jazz. One child’s ticket is available with the purchase of one regularly priced adult ticket. Frequently, SoundTrack tickets are paired with musical encounters such as Charles Yang’s performance with the Festival Symphony Orchestra on July 9 at 7:30 p.m. and the weeknight opera performances of Don Pasquale on July 22 and 23.

Also of special note is a free family concert by Trout Fishing in America, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. at Big Mine Ice Arena in Crested Butte.

For every event attended, youth receive a sticker to put into the SoundTrack passbook that local children received at Crested Butte Community School. Passports also can be obtained at the CBMF ticket office at 326 Elk Ave. in Crested Butte. To reserve or purchase tickets for SoundTrack and see a list of musical encounters, visit and click on Education and SoundTrack.

The festival offers once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for all ages to enjoy more than 50 world-class performances in intimate venues from June 25 – Aug. 9. For more information, visit , pick up a ticket brochure at CBMF’s office at 326 Elk Ave. in Crested Butte or call 970.349.0619.
