What is the PE KIT?

All pupils are required to wear the ‘Budehaven School PE Kit’ for EVERY lesson. The PE kit is ALL supplied through either Wroes or Bude Sports and is purchased at the beginning of year 7.

A change of clothing for Physical Education, Games and Fitness lessons is important, both in terms of hygiene and also to ensure that the clothing is suited to the physical activity.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL ITEMS OF CLOTHING AND PE KIT ARE CLEARLY MARKED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME

Footwear will depend on the activity and boots are preferred for Football and Rugby in the autumn and spring terms.

As a guide, football studs can be of the metal type – as long as they are not worn of sharp. Plastic studs are also acceptable, however, football boots or any studded or bladed footwear is NOT to be worn on the Astro.

Skate shoes, fabric dolly type shoes and baseball type boots are not suitable for PE lessons. A running trainer or astro trainer is suitable. Laces must also be securely tied to support the foot and ankle.

Shin pads are Compulsory for football and Hockey and Gum Shields are recommended for Rugby and hockey.

For core stability/gymnastics and dance it is expected that all pupils will take part in bare feet.

Can I buy any additional items as part of the Budehaven PE Kit?

Yes. For Dance and PE GCSE, A Level and Leadership lessons polo tops are available from the PE Department. For Dance GCSE, students are encouraged to wear black leggings.

What if I FORGET my PE kit?

It is expected that pupils get themselves organised and that forgetting kit is unacceptable. Break/ lunchtime detentions will be set and department kit will be issued, letters will be sent home. In some cases parents will be telephoned/emailed if there is a persistent problem.

What if I LOSE my PE kit?

Firstly, if kit has a NAME INSIDE or is embroidered – a service offered through Bude Sports, we can collect it and get it back to the pupil. If everyone named their kit it would be easier to reacquaint pupils with lost kit. However, if you do lose your kit it is important that as soon as you realise you have lost it you go to find it. There are 3 places to look; in the changing room where you had your PE lesson; in the lost property bin outside the PE office or Stratton road office or in the foyer of the Sports Hall.

If you have a PE lesson and have not found your kit then it is expected that pupils will bring an alterative to allow them to take an active part in the lesson. This can be accompanied from a note from home.

If kit is lost and cannot be found then pupils will be expected to replace their kit.

What do I do if I have an ILLNESS or INJURY?

If you have an injury or illness which stops you taking an active part in the lesson you must bring a Parental Note explaining your situation, this should be given to the PE Teacher on the day of the lesson. You MUST also bring in your kit, get changed and take on the role of coach or umpire. If the lesson is outdoors please bring tracksuit trousers and a coat as you MUST be outside with your class. In the unlikely event that you are unable to get changed i.e. broken leg/arm etc then you will still be expected to coach and umpire where appropriate.

For long term injuries, a Doctors note may be required.

Jewellery and Valuables in PE

All students are expected to remove all jewellery: including rings, watches, earrings, chains, bracelets, including loom bands and charity bracelets (and all piercings) and bracelets to avoid causing injury during a lesson.

The only bracelets/necklaces to be worn in lessons are medi-alerts, which contain vital medical information for the student. If this is the case, students can wear a sweat band over the bracelet. However, for some activities such as trampolining, any personal adornment could be a hazard, so the medi-alert should be removed or the student needs to take part in an alternative activity. This can be arranged with the PE teacher.

Students should not have phones, I-pods with them in their PE lessons. Phones used without permission in the lesson will be removed, labelled and will be collected from Stratton Road office at the end of the day.

Any valuable items needs to either be left at home or left in lockers, at the owner’s risk.

If it is really COLD can I wear something additional to my PE kit?

Yes and this is encouraged. In cold weather students can bring in a navy blue coloured fleece/jumper/hoody and navy blue or black tracksuit bottoms.

For Football, tag rugby and hockey, pupils can wear gloves and a beanie hat if the weather is especially cold, during the warm up phase of the lesson.

What to do if it’s really warm?

If the weather is very warm, students are encouraged to take out a drink of water with them in their lessons, they also need to apply sunblock and they can wear a peaked baseball cap to provide some shade from the sun. It is important to keep hydrated.

Can I SHOWER after outdoor lessons?

Yes. If we are taking part in Rugby/Football or any activity where pupils may get sweaty/muddy/dirty etc then there are individual cubicles for pupils to use. This is NOT compulsory. However, pupils are given additional changing time to allow showers to be taken when it is very wet and/or muddy.

What do I wear for SWIMMING?

BOYS:- We prefer pupils to wear black or dark blue swimming trunks or shorts but we will allow beach shorts.

GIRLS:- We prefer pupils to wear swimming costumes NOT BIKINI’S, colour is not an issue.

What if I really enjoy the activities in my lessons and want to learn some more?

Throughout the year the PE department holds regular practices and play fixtures against other schools. There are also inter-form activities to get involved in; including the ‘Aspire Progamme’ in years 7, 8 and 9, interform competitions and the Budehaven School Games Day in the Summer term. An extra Curricular programme is circulated to every form tutor and Coordinator of Learning and Personal Well-Being at the start of every half term and you can come along to get involved. You could also ask the PE staff when the activity you are interested in is practicing. There is also an ‘Enrichment Board’ at the Stratton Road entrance and the programme is published on the school website.

There are school teams for all the major sports, practices are held at lunchtimes and afterschool, there are also additional ’30 minute Flash’ extra curricular clubs at lunchtime for specific year groups throughout the week.

How do I know how well I am doing in PE?

As in all subjects you will be graded using the school Attitude to Learning grades, current PE levels are subject to change with the introduction of the New PE Curriculum September 2014.

GCSE and A level students will be given grades based on their progress and attainment at 3 reporting times during the year.

Non-Uniform Days and PE kit?

Students are still expected to bring their SCHOOL PE in on non-uniform days, this is to ensure that students safely continue in their PE lessons, the same expectations apply with regards footwear and jewellery.

SPORTS TEAMS and PRACTICES

Where can I find out when PRACTICES are on?

Each new term there is a new practice list/ Enrichment Activity List; these lists are given to every form tutor for them to display in the form room. There is also a notice board outside the PE office and in the Sports Hall with a practice list attached and the Enrichment Activity noticeboard at Stratton Road Office.

It is expected that students will wear their PE kit and trainers for their practices.

Fixtures for the week are posted outside the PE office and in the Sports Hall, they will also be posted on the Budehaven School Web site. However, it is important to note that fixtures may be subject to change, due to bad weather, staff illness or issues with other schools. Some fixtures can also be rearranged at short notice, members of the team will be notified if there are any changes in fixtures.

In addition we publicise additional courses run through the County and individual Sports Governing Bodies.

How do I know if practices are CANCELLED?

Firstly, practices are not cancelled unless there is a good reason ie, staff absence, very poor weather, loss of facilities etc.

If the decision has been made to cancel a practice then a notice will be posted on the PE department notice board and sports hall door, messages will be given to students via registers/student receptionists or a member of the PE department.

Ultimately it is the responsibility of the pupils to check if practices are on the day before their practice is due to take place.

Will practices/matches be cancelled on the day?

This will ONLY happen in extreme circumstances which include; staff absence, poor weather conditions or late cancellation by the opposition. If this is the case we always ensure pupils know at lunch time and pupils are given the opportunity to phone parents from the PE office.

What happens if I get into the TEAM?

There is a huge opportunity for all pupils to represent Budehaven School in intra-school competition and all teams are managed by a teacher or qualified teaching assistant. These managers will select players from practices and team sheets will be posted on the notice board at the top PE office. Team Captains are given the role of checking players’ availability.

What if I CANNOT attend a PRACTICE or a match?

It is the responsibility of the pupil to see the team manager or teacher leading the practice. If you do miss a practice but tell the teacher the reason this will not prevent you being selected for the team. If you can not play in a match which you have been selected for it is very important that you tell the team manager and captain so another pupil can be given the opportunity to take your place.

How will I know when MATCHES will take place?

As a department we are trying to publish FIXTURE LISTS for our major sports and get information posted on our WEBSITE. The lists are not easy to produce due to changes to fixtures for various reasons including, transport, teacher availability, meetings, parents’ evenings and poor weather. However, we are addressing these issues and hope that publishing of fixtures further in advance is achieved. Fixture lists are displayed in the top PE office and in the Sports Hall: there are ‘what’s going on this week’ notice boards in the sports hall and top PE office. Staff at both Stratton Road and Valley Road entrances will also have fixture lists for the week and term.

As a parent how do I know my child is in a school team?

All team sheets are published for pupils to see at the PE office, it is the responsibility of the pupil to tell their parents what they are doing. Dates, times and transport arrangements are always on the team sheets.

Can I come and WATCH my child take part in sport?

It is encouraged that parents attend and watch school matches. We are at present developing a player and spectator charter to enhance our extra-curricular sport and the enjoyment of pupils and parents alike.

THE PE OFFICE IS SITUATED NEAR THE ASTRO AND PE STAFF ARE ALWAYS WILLING TO DISCUSS ISSUES WITH PUPILS.

If you wish to contact a member of the PE department please do so on the school number (01288 353 271) and we will endeavour to return any call missed as soon as possible.
