Newspaper Book Project

Where the Red Fern Grows

Newspaper Book Project

EXTRA!!! EXTRA!!! Read all about it!!! For this book project, you will be creating a newspaper that captures your book's characters, plot, setting(s), and conflict(s). Your paper will contain the following elements:

1. Masthead

The masthead is the title of the newspaper. You will create a title that reflects the setting of your book or some other plot element.

2. Lead Story

• On the front page write a 5 paragraph lead story that explains the plot of your novel. Be sure to include a headline! The plot should include:

o the main characters

o the main problem that they face

o events that lead up to how the characters solve the problem

o how the book concludes.

3. Editorial

• On page two, write a 3 paragraph or more editorial that gives your opinion on your book. Remember, you're writing to persuade your teacher and other students to want to read the book. If you disliked the book, then your editorial should persuade us to not read the book. Give detailed reasons for your feelings, and use examples and quotes from the book to elaborate on your thoughts.

4. Pictures

• Throughout the entire paper, add 5 pictures reflecting characters, places, and conflicts in your book. You should draw the pictures after you have typed out your final copy of the newspaper, so make sure to leave space for each picture. Make sure that each picture is NEAT, and add a sentence underneath each one to explain what you have drawn.

5. Optional Ideas – You must choose two to add to your newspaper!

• Write an obituary for a character if one dies in the story

• Create 2 Classified Advertisements – these might describe someone or something that the characters need or are looking for in the story

• Create a word search using 15 terms from the book – these might be characters’ names, places important to the book, or other terms you think are important to the story

• Create an advertisement section selling items that would have been popular at the time or items the characters may have used.

• Create a weather section where you give a forecast of the weather or describe a horrible storm like the one in the championship coon hunt.

• Write a feature article on one of the more interesting characters of the story.

PROJECT OPTION #2: Poster Project on your Book

After reading your book, you will construct a poster that advertises your book. Your job is to create an advertisement that will convince others to read your book. The poster will include the following elements:

1. TITLE AND AUTHOR OF THE BOOK

2. EDITORIAL OF THE BOOK: Write two paragraphs stating what you liked about the book and characters, how the book made you feel, and what the book made you think about in general. Would you recommend this book to others or not?

3. FAVORITE PASSAGE: Select a passage from your book, and copy it to your poster. This passage must be significant to the story line in your book, and it must consist of 75 words or more. Then, in 2-3 sentences, explain WHY you chose this passage from the book to put on your poster.

4. CONNECTIONS: List 5 connections (text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world) that you made as you read the book. Then, in 2-3 sentences for each connection, explain WHY/HOW you made this connection.

5. CHARACTER POEM: See the back of this page for an explanation of this portion of the poster.

6. PICTURES THAT SHOW THE BOOK: After reading your book, draw or go through some old magazines, and find 5 pictures that resemble characters, places, conflicts, or ideas present in your book. Make sure this part is neat! Underneath (above, or next to) each picture, write a sentence explaining what the picture represents in your story.

You are expected to be creative with your project. You are encouraged to TYPE the written parts of this projects and glue them to the poster board to keep things neat! After viewing your project, we should get a feel for the book and feel inclined to read it.

Writing A Character Poem

To introduce others to a character in your book, you will create a six line character poem. This poem should give us a glimpse into the physical appearance and personality of the character.

The following is the format for the poem:

LINE ONE- Name a character in your book.

LINE TWO- List three words/adjectives that describe the character's appearance.

LINE THREE- With what or with whom do you associate that person?

LINE FOUR- Identify three actions words (words that end in –ing) associated with the character you chose for the poem.

LINE FIVE- When or where are these things done?

LINE SIX- What is your opinion of or reaction to that person?

Write the rough draft of your poem here:

Line 1: _________________________________________________________________________________

Line 2: _________________________________________________________________________________

Line 3: _________________________________________________________________________________

Line 4: _________________________________________________________________________________

Line 5: _________________________________________________________________________________
