TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT

Crisis Planning and Safety Programming Implementation for Youth Receiving Behavioral Health Services Training

(Provided by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities)

Background: The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) seeks to expand best practices and the interventions that are needed in the toolkits of those who work with Georgia's youth and families. Crisis planning and prevention with children and adolescents requires that everyone involved with the child and his/her family work together for solutions. This requires working with the youth themselves, families, schools, and other caring adults to build on existing strengths to meet the needs that set up the crisis situation. The goals of the Crisis Planning and Safety Programming Implementation for Youth Receiving Behavioral Health Services training are: 1) to provide participants serving children and adolescents receiving behavioral health services with an integrated theory and approach to crisis planning and safety programming; 2) to use training and technical assistance to build a community-based approach to crisis management and risk prevention for young people and their families; and 3) to impart and implement a bestpractice crisis planning and safety programming methodology that promotes protective capacity in a community-based context in Georgia.

This training is sponsored and funded by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, Division of Mental Health as part of the Department's support of System of Care in Georgia. A system of care incorporates a broad array of services and supports that is organized into a coordinated network, integrates care planning and management across multiple levels, is culturally linguistically competent, and builds meaningful partnerships with families and youth at service delivery and policy levels.

Description: In crisis planning and safety programming, staff develop collaborative relationships with families and learn from them about the uniqueness of each family. Treatment goals and interventions are developed in collaboration with the family, and family strengths are used to promote crisis prevention. The intent of crisis planning and safety programming is to expand a family's competence by "changing patterns of transaction," both within the family system and between the family and community systems so that the family makes better use of its resources for crisis prevention and intervention.

Training participants will achieve the following learning objectives: 1. Be able to identify the benefits of family-centered, strength-based

practice. 2. Differentiate between crisis and safety situations. 3. Be able to reach agreement with youth and their families about safety

concerns. 4. List five dimensions in creating and developing long-lasting safety and

protective responses with families. 5. Identify five steps in facilitating the development of an effective crisis

plan with youth and their families. 6. Become familiar with how to mobilize a network of people for

managing a crisis situation and for programming for safety situations.

Audience:

The intended participants for Crisis Planning & Safety Programming Implementation for Youth Receiving Behavioral Health Services include staff of child and adolescent serving agencies and departments at varying levels of responsibility, Regional Office staff, chairs of LIPTs, and DBHDD Regional Program Specialists as well as families and family advocates. No registrations, online or faxed, will be accepted after the deadline(s). When submitting registration online, an email will automatically be sent to the email address you provided; this email confirms receipt of your registration. This email is not an approval to attend the training. There are often more registrants than we are able to accommodate and the DBHDD reserves the right to utilize various factors in selecting participants. Notification that you have been approved to attend typically will be sent two weeks prior to the date of the session for which you registered. This notification will be sent via email from the DBHDD Training staff. Exceptions to this timeframe may occasionally occur, depending on when the training was announced. At times, email from us may be automatically sent to your spam/junk email folder. If you have not received a notice 10 days prior to the

CEUs:

event, please be sure to check your spam/junk email folder for the email correspondence prior to inquiring about your status. You may wish to adjust your email settings to allow email from RegistrationMHDDAD@dhr.state.ga.us to be received by your in-box. If you have not received an email indicating whether you are approved or not approved to attend the training by 10 days prior to the event, please email RegistrationMHDDAD@dhr.state.ga.us to inquire about your status. Application has been submitted for 10.0 CEU contact hours for the 2-day training through the UGA School of Social Work for this seminar. Certificates of Attendance also will be provided to those who attend the full training as scheduled. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, or if you leave more than 15 minutes early on either day, we will not be able to issue a Certificate of Attendance or CEUs for your participation.

It is the goal of DBHDD to continue to provide those working within the publically-funded DBHDD system with free, high quality opportunities to acquire credits needed for professional license renewal. DBHDD policy regarding issuance of CEUs is based upon State Law and the guidelines set forth by the Georgia Composite Board which state that "participants must attend the entire presentation in order to receive continuing education credit." Please plan to arrive early or on time for all Department-sponsored training events. If you are more than 15 minutes late arriving for a seminar, you will be welcome to remain for the balance of the presentation, but we will not be able to issue continuing education credits to you as a participant. This policy applies to early departures and phone calls as well ? if you leave more than 15 minutes early, or are out of the room for more than 15 minutes while the training is in session, we will not be able to issue CEUs for your participation.

We have instituted this policy in an effort to cut down on unnecessary interruptions during the presentation and to ensure that our ability to offer CEUs is not put into jeopardy. Participants are expected to make prior arrangements for management of work related emergencies so that such events do not interfere with their full attendance and participation in the training as scheduled.

While there is no charge to participants for these CEUs, those who require CEUs for licensure are responsible for (1) completing the Evaluation Form and (2) signing the Attendance Sheet for CEUs after the completion of the training. Certificates will be mailed to participants who have completed all of the forms required for CEUs at the conclusion of the training. No CEU contact hours can be issued to any attendee who does not complete the required forms and attend the entire training event as scheduled.

Please Note: While there is no fee for this training, participants are responsible for their own meals, snacks and lodging arrangements. Please bring a light-weight jacket or sweater as trainers have no control over room temperature.
