English III - Humble Independent School District

General Information

Welcome to English III: American Literature! I am excited to share my love of literature and composition with you! This class is designed to be a survey course of American writers. Together we will utilize our skills as communicators to effectively analyze and explore various selections found within the United States and globally. Dedicate yourselves to developing your critical thinking and writing skills as we trace the birth of the American Dream from 1492 to the present.

Classroom Expectation

I desire to foster an environment where students feel comfortable participating in the learning process. Therefore, I expect students to actively ‘build each other up’ with their words and actions. Behavior that disrupts this environment or distracts the class from our common goal may result in the following: verbal reprimand, student-teacher conference, call or email to a parent/guardian, removal from classroom to principal’s office, demerits, or discipline referrals.

Classroom Procedures

• You will receive a syllabus at the beginning of each grading period. The syllabus may change to meet the needs of the class. Check for corrections on the whiteboard daily.

• All work is due at the beginning of class.

• After taking a seat, please begin your warm-up.

• Within the first few weeks of school, please find a study partner, so if absent, you may gather missed information and notes from him or her. Remember: Not all notes will be posted on the website.

• Remain in your seat until the bell rings.

Grading

A. Tests, Major Projects and Essays-60%

B. Daily work, Homework & Quizzes-40%

C. You can expect to see only three summative and approximately eight formative grades per nine- weeks grading period.

D. If you earn a failing grade on a summative assessment, you may reassess, but this is a limited opportunity (only one assignment per nine -weeks may be reassessed). Also, you must attend tutoring before a reassessment can be given. The highest possible grade that may be earned on a reassessment is a 70.

E. Grades are NEVER discussed during class. Please make an afternoon appointment to discuss your grade.

F. Check your grades online and use the class website.

G. Grade Book Symbol Key:

Z = Assignment is currently a zero, but it may be made up.

X = Student is exempt from this assignment.

Makeup Work

• Most assignments and handouts are available for downloading on the school website. Additional copies of make-up work are located in the files in the classroom. It is your responsibility to gather the assignments and the handouts upon your return to school.

• If you are absent on a due date, the assignment is due the day you return or late penalties will apply. ASSIGMENTS DUE ON must be submitted to the website on the due date regardless of a student’s absence or presence on campus.

• All late work and makeup work is to be handed to me personally. Please do not simply place it on my desk.

• Making up Quizzes/Tests: Makeups need to be completed in a reasonable amount of time. To make up a test, the maximum amount of time allotted will be one week. After that, a zero will be entered into the gradebook.

LATE WORK POLICY

A formative assignment loses 20 points each day for the first five days it is late and earns a 0 on the fifth day. A late summative assignment loses 20 points for the first two days and drops to a 50% on the third day it is late.

Tutoring

• Tuesday/Wednesday B-block lunch

• Mornings by appointment

• English III team P.M. tutoring (for make-ups):

o Monday (Bradley)

o Tuesday (Sandvick)

o Thursday (Piperi)

Please sign up on the tutoring calendar. This guarantees a time dedicated to you and your questions. If you need to cancel a tutoring appointment, please ensure that cross out your name.

Please remember: Tutoring is NOT just for a student who might fail. It is for anyone willing to come and ask thoughtful questions!

Academic Honesty

Per Kingwood High School, our academic pledge is:

“I affirm on my honor that I did not give or receive any unauthorized assistance on this assignment or examination.”

In submitting work, you agree to this policy.

KHS Cheating Policy

Cheating on an assignment or test will result in a zero being recorded for that assignment or test.  In addition, cheating is considered a level 2 conduct violation and is subject to additional disciplinary measures as discussed in the Student Code of Conduct.

You will not be allowed to reassess an assignment or test on which you have cheated.
