0902 - Cubs - Highland Games Night - February 2009

Continuing with the Scottish theme, the Thursday Night Cubs held a Highland Games Night where they tried out a number of Scottish sports.  The sports ranged from the ancient to the modern, and included a large amount of improvisation!

The Sheaf Toss is a traditional event from the Highland Games, where a 16lb bundle of straw is tossed using a pitchfork over a high bar.  For our indoor version, we used a minature bale of hay and no pitchfork!

There were plenty of action shots as the hay bale flew over, under or through the bar.

There were many different techniques used to get the bale over the high bar.

The Caber Toss is another ancient sport from the Highland Games.  The aim is not to throw the furthest, but to throw the straightest.

Getting the very long caber balanced proved tricky, but encouragement from team-mates helped.

Golf is played all over the world, but originally came from Scotland.  The Cubs practised their putting with a driver and a tennis ball.

The logistics of staging a game of Shinty were avoided by the invention of an innovative new game - Tabletop Shinty.

The use of toilet roll tubes instead of sticks meant no helmets were required.

End to end action on the Shinty field table.

The Hammer Throw is another event which forms part of the traditional Highland Games, the object being to throw a very heavy hammer as far as possible.

The aim of our indoor version was based on accuracy rather than distance, with the Cubs attempting to throw a wooden mallet into a bucket.
