Genetics Project: Design a Species

Genetics Project: Design a Species

Create and Imaginary Creature. The creature must have at least 4 genetic traits from the following list

2 Single Allele Traits

1 Codominant Trait or 1 Incomplete Dominant Trait (designate which it is)

1 Multiple Allele Trait or 1 Sex Linked Trait (designate which it is)

What to do:

1. Describe and Sketch each of the traits on the list, showing genotypes and phenotypes for each.

2. Show the genotype and phenotype for two examples of your creature. You may choose the genotype but the two examples must have different genotypes.

3. Using one of your single allele traits or the sex linked trait create a sample pedigree for your creature which includes at least 3 generations. Show a key for what trait you are using as the affected individuals. You can show the genotypes of the individuals if you want. Be careful not to make any impossible situations!

4. Create 3 practice problems using any of your traits. You must also show solutions to these problems.

Questions:

1) An oval face marries a heterozygous round face. Will they have any oval faced kids?

| |r |r |

|R |Rr |Rr |

|r |rr |rr |

Key: rr x Rr Yes, they have a 50 % chance of having an oval faced child.

2) Can 2 curly haired people have a straight haired child? Show the cross or crosses to prove your answer.

| |H |h |

|H |HH |Hh |

|h |Hh |hh |

Yes, if both parents are heterozygous for their curly hair they can have a child with straight hair.

| |R |R |

|r |Rr |Rr |

|r |Rr |Rr |

3) An oval faced woman claims that a homozygous round faced man is the father of her oval faced child. Is this true?________ Show the cross to prove it. Key: rr x RrR

No, the dad would have given the child a dominant gene so it is not possible.

All children would be heterozygous round face.

Notes:

I have shown a complete example project on the back of this paper.

You may NOT use the example traits provided on the sample on the back

Be creative!!!!

You may choose EITHER a sex-linked or a multiple allele trait. I have shown both.

You can receive extra credit by creating more traits.

These projects will be displayed in the hallway so make them look good and include your names on the front!!
