A Year After Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy was a tragic storm that hit the east coast October 29, 2012. Many families lost their homes, people had no power for weeks upon weeks, students were out of school and adults were out of work. Flooding caused tremendous damage to homes and businesses and repairs took months on end. Some homes and businesses are still in the process of repairing damages caused by the storm. Just a few weeks ago, the one-year anniversary of the storm passed. Sadly, thousands of people are still not back in their homes. In places like Breezy Point and Long Beach, many people are still displaced and struggling to rebuild. Sandy was so destructive and even caused the deaths of 100+ people. In the aftermath of Sandy, neighbors, communities, friends, and families came together to help those in need. People provided shelter to those who had nowhere to go, clothing to those whose clothing was damaged or destroyed, and food to those who were not able to get into their homes or had no electric. To

see communities such as the Lawrence School District community come together to help those in need was heartwarming. Even now, people are still helping those in need due to the storm. The amount of damage and destruction caused by this one storm is unimaginable. The Long Beach Boardwalk was torn apart and it wasn't until a few weeks ago that the boardwalk was completely rebuilt. The New York Aquarium was also hit really badly and even though it reopened recently as well, many of the sites within the aquarium remain closed and under renovation due to damages from the storm. Many of the beach clubs in Atlantic Beach faced such severe damage that some of them didn't reopen at all. There were so many places affected by this horrible and powerful storm. We would never be where we are today without the help of our friends, family, and community during this time of need. Hopefully those still suffering due to Sandy will soon be back in their businesses and homes.

Rock Hall County Fair

Recently there was a County Fair at the Rock Hall Museum next to Lawrence Middle School. This year the fair, co-sponsored by the Town of Hempstead and the Friends of Rock Hall Museum, celebrated its 28th annual country fair. The county fair is a lot of fun and has something for everyone. This year the fair had craft vendors, a harvest market, museum tours, a children's craft area, woodworking, a pumpkin patch, an animal farm, pony rides, and even scarecrow making. The fair also had antique cars and a delicious food court. Every year hundreds of people attend and enjoy all that the fair has to offer. If you were not able to attend this year's fair, make sure you don't miss out on all of the fun and excitement next year.

Spirit week is one of the best weeks of the year. Spirit week is usually early in the school year. It is a week that students and staff can show their pride for Lawrence Middle School. The week starts off with Jersey Day. Everyone comes into school wearing the jersey of their favorite team. Many students even wear the jersey of the team they play for in the fall. Tuesday

was Twin Day. On Twin Day people find a friend to dress the same as for the day. Wednesday was Way Back Wednesday. On this day, 5th graders dressed like people from the 1950's, 6th graders dressed like people from the 1960's, 7th graders dressed like people from the 1970's and 8th graders dressed like people from the 1980's. Thursday was Spirit Day. On Spirit Day,

students and staff really show their spirit for LMS. On this day, everyone wears the Lawrence School District colors, which are blue and gold. Friday is Pajama Day. Everyone rolls out of bed and comes to school in their comfortable pajamas. This is a great and fun way to show school spirit.

The Town Hall Meeting

On November 8, 2013, 5th and 6th graders and the 7th and 8th graders had their town hall meetings. The 5th and 6th graders had their meeting during 6th period and the 7th and 8th graders had theirs during 2nd period. During the assembly, students and classes were recognized by teachers for outstanding accomplishments. In addition to recognizing students for their hard work,

a PowerPoint presentation showed pictures of students at the Halloween Hot Skates event. The presentation also showed pictures from LMS Spirit week. During the assembly Ms. Weiner and Ms. Sherman's 7th grade academic support class gave a presentation about recycling and glaciers. They showed a short video on glaciers and read a letter about recycling. They put a lot

of work into their presentation. At the end of the assembly, Mrs. Moore announced the students who received rock-cards for performing an act of kindness. Selected students were given prizes for their actions. The first town hall meeting of the year went great and we cannot wait to celebrate more successes at other town hall meetings throughout the year.

In 2004 David Baszucki and Erik Cassel created the awesome multi-player game, Roblox. They made the game so that a gamer is able to make an account or play without an account. Many students have played the game. It is a game that people never get bored of. The game has a great

feature that allows gamers to customize their own virtual characters. Gamers can also create clothing for their avatar or purchase virtual clothing on the game for their avatar. Gamers are able to sell the clothing they created but they must have Builders Club. Other gamers can purchase the cloth-

ing using virtual currencies called tickets and Robux. The game allows gamers to socialize with their friends. Gamers can request their friends to be part of their community. If you haven't played this game before, you should certainly try it; it is a lot of fun.

Are you RICH in Character?

This year, Lawrence Middle School adopted a new set of core values as part of the character education program. The middle school's core values are RICH. RICH stands for Respect, Integrity, Caring, and Honesty. The slogan that goes along with these core values is "Lawrence Middle School is RICH in character". The core values are meant to inspire students to respect one another, become hard and honest workers, develop caring and kind students and faculty, and to be honest. Each student and teacher has completed a RICH pledge card. On the pledge card they were asked to write their name and how/why they

are RICH in character. These pledge cards are

posted all around the school building. This is just one of the many ways we are promoting our core values within the school. I stopped and asked Mrs. Ward her opinion about the core values of LMS and she replied, "The core values remind us that we need to respect each other and demonstrate good decisions and character." I couldn't agree more. Ask yourself if you are RICH

in character. If your answer is yes, reflect on how you demonstrate the core values. If your answer is no, ask yourself how you can become RICH in character and exemplify the core values of our school.

Costumes and Skating and Music... OH MY!

Halloween is one of the most anticipated days by kids of all ages. Dressing up in costumes, staying up late, and FREE CANDY! Can it get any better? YES IT CAN! Every year, Lawrence Middle School hosts the Halloween event of the year...HALLOWEEN HOT SKATES! This event promises to be a fun-filled two hours with lots of costumes, skating, and

music. There are two events every year. One event is for the 5th and 6th graders and one is for the 7th and 8th graders. Students come to Hot Skates dressed up in their Halloween costumes and have the chance to win the costume contest. Students with the best costumes are selected the winners of the contest and are awarded a prize. During this two-hour event, students skate on the

skating rink, listen to music, play in the arcade, and eat delicious snacks. Teachers and staff chaperone the event and some even join the students on the skating rink. This is an event that is not to be missed and one that creates many great memories for students.

Thanksgiving Dinner Dance

All year Ms. Dowling and Mrs. Iuliano work hard to put together fun events for the students. One of the most time consuming yet rewarding events that they put together is the Thanksgiving Dinner Dance. About two weeks before Thanksgiving, both teachers and the student government members work hard to turn the gym into a beautiful banquet hall and the gym into a fun and exciting dance floor. This year on November14th, students in the 5th and 6th grade gathered in a line by the gym right after the 7th period bell rang. They were all excited for the gym doors to open and to begin dancing and enjoying the night with

their friends. After two hours of great music played by the DJ, the 5th and 6th graders were escorted to the new gym. At the same time, the 7th and 8th graders arrived and they were seated in the new gym as well. In the new gym, Mr. Perry, other building level administrators, and teachers greeted students. After all students were seated, Mr. Perry said a few words about the Thanksgiving holiday and then students enjoyed a fabulous dinner. Parents and community businesses donated all types of food for this event. Parents of the PTA were generous enough to take the time to assist in handing out food to students and making sure

the event ran smoothly. After all students ate, the 5th and 6th graders were dismissed and the 7th and 8th graders went to the gym to dance and sing. Students truly enjoyed themselves at this event. The following day in school, students were talking about what a great time they had at the Dinner Dance and how they are thankful that they had the opportunity to attend the event. As the holidays approach, it is important that we take the time recognize the things that we are thankful for in our lives.

Minecraft is a great game to play. Minecraft is a game that allows players to use their imaginations and creativity. The game allows players to build a world of their own. Players are able to play Minecraft on an iPod, iPhone, iPad, computer, or even on an Xbox. This is a game that a player can play with a friend, a group of friends, or even alone. There are many unique "characters" in the game such as Enderman, Creepers, Zombies, Wither and Enderdragon. Each serves a special purpose and presents challenges for the player

to overcome. In November, the annual MineCon convention takes place. The previ-

ous conventions were held in Washington, Las Vegas, and Paris. This year the con-

vention was held in Florida on November 2nd and 3rd. The convention is a gathering of people who play the game. At the convention, gamers are able to meet the creator and even give their opinions about the game. They can say what they would like to see added to the game. If you like to play computer games, I strongly suggest playing Minecraft. See for yourself why so many people play this awesome game.

Change, Changed, and Changing

Every year at the beginning of school, changes take place. Often times, change makes people nervous. Every September when students start school they have to change their schedules from summer mode to school mode. Students are a whole year older and begin a new a grade; they have new schedules and different teachers. Students may make new friends, join sports and other after school activities, and sometimes even change their clothing style. Fifth graders even change the school they are attending. Teachers face changes too. They need to learn their students' names and adjust to a new teaching sched-

ule. This year Lawrence Middle School faced some very big changes. Although Mr. Perry joined our school last year, this is his first full year as our Principal. We also have two other administrators who are new to our building this year. Ms. DePaola is our new Assistant Principal and Math and Science Chairperson. Ms. Herrera is our new English Language Arts and Social Studies Chairperson. Believe it or not, these are not the only changes Lawrence Middle School has welcomed this year. When walking by gym, it is hard to not notice the "UP" and "DOWN" signs hanging on the walls. We have up and down staircases near the gym

to help with people-traffic in on the stairs. This is a new rule that we did not have last year. I am sure many students have also noticed that the food in the cafeteria tastes great this year. That is because there is a new food service company in the lunchroom. In addition, many may have noticed the absence of Mrs. Beach, our former Assistant Principal. This is because Mrs. Beach is now the new principal at the #5 Elementary School. Lastly, the school is opening a new school store. Don't forget to stop by and purchase pens, pencils, or a yummy treat.

On November 7th, the PTA and our school administrators invited Mr. Halligan to speak to the 7th and 8th graders about cyber bullying. The assembly was called "Ryan's Story" and was about Mr. Halligan's son Ryan. The assembly was very sad but also very important for us to hear. Ryan Halligan was a 13-year old middle school boy who committed suicide because he was being bullied. Mr. Halligan told us about the time after his son's death when he was looking at his son's yearbook. He said Ryan had written comments on the pictures of the kids who bullied him. He said that it broke his heart to think about the amount of pain his son was in from being treated so horribly by others. Students in his school had called his son gay and one girl went as far as to pretend to like Ryan all throughout the summer. They messaged on AOL all summer long. When school started again in the fall, Ryan approached the girl. The girl

told Ryan that he was a loser and that she didn't want to have anything to do with him. She told him that she was only joking during the summer and that she was never interested in him. She and her friends had thought it would be funny for her to pretend to like him so that he would reveal personal information about himself. It is sad that Ryan had to be part of such an awful joke. During the assembly, Mr. Halligan stressed the importance of being an upstander instead of a bystander. He told us that if we know of anyone that is being bullied or of someone that is bullying others, we must tell an adult. He also begged us to get help if we are being bullied. Do not be a bully and do not allow others to get bullied! We need to have zero tolerance for bullying!

Going Into the Other Half... Of Middle School

Being a 7th grader is awesome. I just entered the 7th grade. 7th grade is very different from 5th and 6th grade. First, 7th grade students have a different teacher for every subject. This is nice because we do not have to sit in the same room all day long. However, getting from class to class can be tricky. As 7th graders we can join a sports team! The 2-year wait is finally over! Any 7th grader can try out to be on a sports team.

Teams that 7th graders can tryout for include soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and softball. Also, any 7th grader can walk onto the lacrosse, football, wrestling, cross-country, and track teams. Finally, the 7th and 8th grade music program is combined. 7th graders who participate in band or orchestra perform in the same ensemble as the 8th graders. Over all, 7th grade is a new experience and a symbol of growing up.

KEEPING CLEAN! ? Before applying makeup, always make sure your face is clean. ? Wash your face with soap and water. ? If you have sensitive skin, do not use harsh facial washes or soaps. ? Do not use face soaps that contain alcohol or fragrances. ? Make sure to use unscented moisturizers. ? Make sure your face is dry before applying any makeup to your face.

FOUNDATION TIME! Makeup is expensive! Remember, a little goes a long way.

? It is not necessary to dump a lot of foundation on a brush. ? When using foundation you need to put a little bit on at a time. ? Blend foundation all over your face (cheeks, chin, forehead, nose, and eye-

The Samsung Smart TV is an awesome experience for people who love to watch television, play video games, check their email and love to watch movies. The Samsung Smart TV makes all of that possible. Have you ever imagined using Skype through your television? Now with the Samsung TV you are able to chat with a friend through SKYPE. I recommend buying this television if you like to play games such as "Homerun Derby". The graphics are fantastic and it enhances the gaming experience. The television has other great qualities such as the voice command. You can change the channel and turn the television on and off using the voice command feature. If you do not want to use the regular remote or the voice command, there is a third device you can use to control your television. You can purchase the keyboard for an additional one-time fee. The TV also has the ability to download music. The television has many more amazing features. If you are purchasing a television in the near future, this is the TV I recommend.

Nutella Cookies!!

Who doesn't love an easy recipe that results in something yummy and delicious? The recipe below is incredible and simple to make. For alternatives and variations to the recipe, just Google "Nutella Cookies". Make these cookies to bring to a holiday party or when having guests over. You are sure to impress with these simple and mouth-watering cookies.

Ingredients ? cup + 1 tbsp of all purpose flour 1 large egg 1 cup of Nutella

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees 2. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl 3. Roll dough into small balls 4. Place on cookie sheet about two inches apart 5. Push down slightly on the dough with the back of a spoon so that they are slightly flattened 6. Place in oven and back for about 10 minutes

7. Take out of oven, let cool, and ENJOY!

The Lebron Hype

Lebron James can easily be called the best player in the NBA. Additionally, many children and teenagers view him as a role model. But can Lebron live up to the hype surrounding his name? Some criticize Lebron for his decision to join the Miami Heat in 2010 over the New York Knicks and others, while disappointed with his decision, understand that he needed to do what was best for his career. Others expect so much from Lebron that they criticize him for only having won two championship rings. Think about it, he won TWO RINGS; most players never even win one ring. Still, others are upset with him because he thinks he is better than Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. The Cleveland Cavaliers selected Lebron as the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA draft. In his short ten-year career he has been recognized time and time again for his outstanding performance. In addition to winning two NBA championships, he has also won four NBA Most Valuable Player Awards, two NBA Finals MVP Awards, two Olympic gold medals, an NBA scoring title, and the NBA Rookie of the Year Award. Will Lebron live up to all of the hype? Is Lebron really better than Michael Jordan? Lunch... We Need More Time!

A common feeling around the school is that lunch periods should be longer. Daily lunchtime has been a big issue for students. The least anticipated sound of the day is when the whistle blows while students are eating in the cafeteria. The noise of the whistle means that students must either go outside for recess or that they must all move into one cafeteria, even if they are not finished eating. If you ask students if they need more time during lunch, most will answer with a quick and certain yes. There are many reasons that students would give to support why they feel their lunchtime should be extended.

Lunchtime is a time when students socialize with their friends. It is a time when friends sit and chat, when they discuss their favorite television shows, the lat-

est news in sports, and yes, even help one another with homework. Students need to have time to be kids and just talk, run around, and laugh. These are all important and all things that cannot be done inside the classroom. Lunchtime is also an opportunity for students to see those friends that they may not have classes with during the school day. Students sometimes need a little more time to socialize with others while they are eating or when they are finished.

Another reason that lunchtime should be extended in LMS is that students need time to digest their food before going to class. By the time students are done getting their lunch and finished eating, it is time for them to clean up and go to class. This leaves very little time for digesting food. Every student and teacher wants to

relieve growling stomachs, stomachaches or pains and be able to move around better. If students are eating their food quickly and then running off to class, they may get cramps in their stomach from eating fast and not digesting their food.

A third reason for extending the time allowed for lunch also goes along with relieving growling stomachs. Many times when finished eating, you realize you are still hungry and want a second helping. The short lunch periods that we have at LMS do not allow for seconds on food or for time to eat an additional snack that you may have brought with you from home. Having experienced short lunch periods for my three years in LMS, I really think longer lunch periods are necessary.

Peanut allergies are very dangerous and life threatening. If a person has severe peanut allergies and eats something with peanuts he/she can go into anaphylaxis shock. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may even lead to death.

Recently, the Lawrence community was deeply saddened by the death of a friend, classmate, and student due to a peanut allergy. In memory of this jovial student, we must bring more awareness to peanut and other food allergies.

Peanut Allergies

Recently on a staff development day, all Lawrence Middle School teachers were given detailed information on allergies and the proper protocol to follow should a student or staff member suffer an allergic reaction. In addition, staff were informed about administrering epinephrine (Epi-Pen) if necessary. An Epi-Pen is a medical device that is used to administer a measured dose of epinephrine. This is used to prevent anaphylactic shock. Once admnistered, an ambulance must be called and the victim should be brought to the hospital.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates that the peanut allergy is one of the most common causes of food-related death. Due to this statistic, we must become more aware of what we are eating and who we are eating near. We must pay close attention to the types of foods we bring into school and be mindful of those around us at all times. It is important to always check lables before buying something, even if you do not think it contains peanuts. Remember, always be allergy aware!

Bye Bye Hannah Montana... Hello Miley Cyrus?

As most people already know, and as many have seen on MTV's video music awards, Miley Cyrus has changed since playing Hannah Montana on Disney Channel. In fact, she has changed so much that some parents do not want their children listening to her music at all. She is no longer that sweet and innocent Hannah Montana and her latest music videos prove this. Some even argue that Cyrus is going crazy. Her music and videos do not send a great message. However, even with all of

the controversy surrounding her music and changes, people seem to still be enjoying her music. "We Can't Stop" was one of the top ten songs of the summer and her newest release "Wrecking Ball" was one of the most played radio songs for the month of October. What are your thoughts? Terrible Teacher

Today in September, it was my first day of school, But when I saw my teacher, she wasn't pretty or cool.

She assigned a smelly locker for my binders and books; I hesitated for a new one, but the teacher gave me a look.

Her last name was Orta; Miss Orta was her name. She always thinks what students are doing is a game.

Miss Orta sent me all the way in the back where I couldn't see; This teacher seemed really mean to me.

She banged a ruler on everyone's desk to look up at the board, But whenever I raised my hand, I always got ignored.

The worst part that happened at the end of the day Was that she gave me detention and I needed to stay.

I didn't know why, but I didn't do anything wrong; At least I knew Miss Orta was gone!
