TV: THE LAST DAILY SCREEN FOR A THIRD OF ADULTS

TWICE AS MANY `ADDICTED' TO SMARTPHONES The days of Johnny Carson and The Tonight Show

tucking Americans into bed at night may be long over, but the number of adults who say a television is the last screen they typically see before bedtime remains fairly steady.

More than a third -- 35 percent -- say TV is the last screen they view before going to bed. That's down only slightly from the 37 percent who said TV was their last screen each day in 2015. A report from CivicScience reveals, however, that more Americans are using their mobile phone before hitting the pillow. Its survey shows 37 percent of adults say a smartphone is typically the last screen they look at. That's up six points compared to when the question was asked three years ago.

At the same time, tablets (7%), e-readers (2%) and smartwatches (1%) all held steady. "Compared to 2015, mobile phone and TV usage still are the most popular choices of devices before bed -- making up a combined 72 percent of responses in 2018 and 68 percent in 2015," CivicScience concludes. The survey, based on 10,282 responses, shows television still has a late-night hold on Baby Boomers. Among that demo, 53 percent report TV is the last screen they use before bed. Even among Gen Xers, 41 percent say TV is their go-to. Perhaps that has something to do with life stage. CivicScience reports that more than half (52%) of parents and grandparents say they use TVs as their last device. Although smartphones do best among Millennials, even among that demo nearly one-in-five (19%) credit TV as their final pre-bed screen. Among those Americans who say a television is their final screen during a typical day, CivicScience asked whether they considered themselves "addicted" to TV -- and 37 percent said yes. That compares to 70 percent of people who said they're "addicted" to their smartphone.

If there's an unexpected result, it's the number of people who say they don't use any screen before bed. That number has jumped by 50 percent during the past three years, with nearly one-inten (9%) adults reporting they avoid screens altogether before bedtime. Even more surprising, it's Gen Zers who are most likely (14%) to not use a device. That may have something to do with several studies that have shown the type of blue light emitted by screens can interfere with sleep. "Although the change is gradual, time will tell if overall device usage before bed continues to decline," the report says.

ADVERTISER NEWS CNBC reports that Target for the first time ever will offer

free, two-day shipping with no minimum purchase required this holiday season. It's part of a bid to win over shoppers from rivals like Walmart and Amazon. The retailer says that starting Nov. 1 and running through Dec. 22, "hundreds of thousands of items" will be eligible for free, two-day shipping

on . In March, it began offering the perk to its credit card holders or for those orders over $35. Also this holiday season, Target said its "Drive Up" service -- where shoppers can place orders online and have them brought directly to their cars -- will be at nearly 1,000 stores, ahead of a planned rollout schedule. And its same-day delivery option via Shipt will be available nationwide... Meanwhile: Walmart said it's expanding two-day shipping and in-store returns to many items sold by third parties on its website next month, just ahead of the busy holiday shopping season... Chain Store Age says Starbucks is expanding its fledgling Princi format with an outpost in New York City. The coffee giant's third freestanding Princi location will make its official debut tomorrow in Manhattan, just minutes away from bustling Times Square. In 2016, Starbucks announced it had joined a global investment team to expand Italy's Princi into international markets... Sears Holdings Corp. will not publish a printed version of its iconic catalog this holiday season, one year after bringing it back into circulation for some members of its loyalty program, according to The Chicago Tribune. The digital Wish Book will be online in early November. Kmart, also owned by Sears, has a toy catalog this year that's already been released. Sears announced last week that it's filed for bankruptcy... McDonald's says it will launch new breakfast items and a new classic meal deal, Reuters reports, as the world's biggest fast-food chain looks to boost traffic at its slowing U.S. business. McDonald's CFO Kevin Ozan said on a post-earnings call that the number of customers in the U.S. had fallen in the third quarter. The company's same-store-sales in the market also missed expectations. McDonald's did not provide more details on the new menu items.

MOST AMERICANS COOL TO STORE CREDIT CARDS Store credit cards are everywhere, but that doesn't mean

consumers like them. Seventy-four percent of Americans have had a store credit card -- and half of those with a card regretted getting it, according to a new report. The study looked at credit cards offers from 50 of the nation's largest retailers. Most offered some sign-up bonus or reward. But they came with a high interest rate: The average annual percentage rate of the reviewed cards was 24.97 percent. Some even went higher -- one card had an APR of 30.49 percent, the highest in the survey, and three others had an APR of 29.99 percent.
