(OC) Now, our series 'Show Me the Money." At the supermarket, do you

know the price of orange juice has gone up so much, 25% last year, eggs up

15%, milk, 6%? So any bit of savings can help.

08:16:57 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) So can you really, really save money with coupons? And brand-new

ways to use them, we're gonna tell you about all that.

08:17:05 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) First, meet Texas mom, Miranda Hicks, who has turned clipping

coupons into an art.

08:17:14 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) For her, grocery shopping isn't a chore, a kind of athletic event.

08:17:19 MIRANDA HICKS, OBSESSED WITH COUPONS

I walked out of a grocery store not too long ago with 22 bottles of

shampoo and did not spend a penny.

08:17:24 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) It's her versus the supermarket. The prize, how much can she save?

08:17:28 SUPERMARKET EMPLOYEE, MALE

You saved $113.15.

08:17:30 MIRANDA HICKS

Woo-hoo.

08:17:31 SUPERMARKET EMPLOYEE

There you go.

08:17:31 MIRANDA HICKS

All right.

08:17:32 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) The Dallas area wife and mother of two is a self-proclaimed coupon

queen.

08:17:37 MIRANDA HICKS

There's no reason to try and tell a lie because I Am absolutely obsessed.

I'm addicted.

08:17:44 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) The challenge begins every Saturday morning at 8:00 AM. She

purchases 20, yes, 20 Sunday early edition newspapers. She and her

husband sort, clip, stack, file thousands of coupons individually, by name

brand and product into three-ring binders.

08:18:03 MIRANDA'S SON, CHILD

Very boring.

08:18:04 MIRANDA'S DAUGHTER, CHILD

Very boring.

08:18:05 MICHAEL HICKS, MIRANDA'S HUSBAND

I don't know. I thought it was kind of crazy at first, sitting there at

the table cutting coupons. But then I went to the store with her the

first time, and purchased my first items with my coupons, and saw the

savings - and I was hooked ever since.

08:18:16 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) But before you wonder why, listen to their savings.

08:18:20 MIRANDA HICKS

I save between 70% and 100% each week.

08:18:24 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) $1,000 a month. And even though about half of all Americans do use

coupons, of the more than 330 billion in discounts offered by companies,

only 2.6 billion were redeemed last year. Miranda and Michael Hicks are

kind of making up for the rest of us.

08:18:43 MIRANDA HICKS

All of these would have cost us $284 and today, we only spent $94.

08:18:48 MICHAEL HICKS

It's well worth it. That's why we're, that's why we're, we do it every

day. Every day.

08:18:55 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) Well, they like win the Olympics of all of this. Our consumer

correspondent, Elisabeth Leamy, is here. Because there are new ways to

think about it, but first, I've got to say it looks so time consuming.

Does anybody have time to do it?

08:19:06 ELISABETH LEAMY, ABC NEWS

(OC) And it can be. I saw some statistic that true coupon queens spend

at least two hours a week clipping and shopping. The answer...

08:19:12 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) That's all?

08:19:13 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) The answer is CHILD LABOR. Some families now, instead of giving

their kids an allowance, are asking them to clip coupons and they give

them whatever the savings are for the family.

08:19:22 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) Oh, so you make it a big family adventure.

08:19:23 ELISABETH LEAMY

(VO) A family project.

08:19:24 DIANE SAWYER

(VO) ...to do it together. Now there are new ways to do it,

particularly online. Give us some of them.

08:19:28 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) Right. The Sunday circulars are great, but I definitely like to go

high-tech. There are all sorts of sites where you can go and clip out

coupons online, print them out, take them to the store. ,

. We did it yesterday. Here's one for hamburger helper, for example. All sorts of favorite brands that you can do

that way.

08:19:44 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) And - if you, if you do it, do you always need paper or are there

other ways to do it, too?

08:19:50 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) Coupon codes. Has anybody here heard of coupon codes? I don't

wanna have to tell you again. A lot of my friends don't know about this.

Coupon codes, instead of a paper coupon, when you're shopping online, you

type in this code when you check out. I like to use it to buy clothes.

But it also works for basics. I went to drugstore or I found one for

yesterday, $10 off. So it can really work.

08:20:10 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) All right. Apart from online, you can still phone and get coupons.

I didn't know this.

08:20:14 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) Yeah. This was new to me, too. If you have favorite products,

call the 800 number on the package and ask them if they offer coupons. We

did it yesterday and found all sorts of things, including $1 off of Frito

lay potato chips that you would put on your ice cream.

GRAPHICS: CALL COMPANIES TO REQUEST COUPONS

08:20:27 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) Right.

08:20:30 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) Yeah, so you can do that.

08:20:31 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) And even if your coupons have - expired or if they're mangled, you

say don't, don't give up on them, you can still use them sometimes?

08:20:37 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) You know, grocery stores, it's kind of like if you don't ask, they

won't tell. So it really does pay to ask them their coupon policies.

Some of them take competitors coupons, so you don't have to go driving all

around town. Some of them double or triple the face value of the coupons.

And, yes, some of them - do take expired coupons. So it literally pays

to ask questions.

08:20:56 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) And how much do you do it yourself, honest to goodness?

08:20:58 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) Oh, geez. I'm not a great coupon user. I like to use them for big

items. You can use coupons at outlet malls these days, things like that.

I'm, I'm more of a clothing shopper than a grocery shopper, truth is.

08:21:09 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) Do you use them? How many of you do it? How many of you take it

pretty serious?

08:21:12 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) Hands up. Hands up.

08:21:13 DIANE SAWYER

(OC) Not many people here. Just remember that figure of how many

billions are going unused every year. I can't stand that.

08:21:19 ELISABETH LEAMY

(OC) Right. And maybe we all would be like that woman, but if evMMERCIAL BREAK
