Advent: To Be or To Do

I had a good conversation with a friend a few years ago about what we should do vs. what we should be. We are really good at keeping busy and thinking that we have to keep doing more and more. The Advent season is filled with planning for Christmas, shopping for Christmas gifts, attending Christmas programs at schools for our children and grandchildren.

The first reading from Zephaniah states, "Be glad" because of what God has done for us, his protections and his mercy. Be grateful. Be not afraid. Be not discouraged. Be renewed. God is in our midst. God is in our day-to-day events, good or bad.

The Responsorial Psalm invites us to be confident and unafraid, to be strong and courageous in the Lord. He enters the world to save, to save us who believe in him. That brings up a good point, we are to be believers: believers in the incarnation (the Son of God on earth), believers in his love for us, and believers in his mission-- salvation for all.

The 2nd reading invites us to be kind people, calm people, prayerful people, and peaceful people.

And when we become all these things, the good works will naturally flow from our being! ? Gratitude will turn into thanksgiving. ? Generosity will turn into sharing. ? Courage will lead to courageous acts. ? Peace will help us bring peace to tense and anxious situations. ? A just heart will guide us to live just lives at home and school, in work and play, and in society at large. The crowd, the tax collector, and the soldiers heard that message from John the Baptist in the gospel today.

In other words, bring Jesus into our hearts and his good works will flow from our mouths, hands, and feet. Each of us will have a unique role in his works.

May the Advent season be a time to reflect on why God came to our world, what he wants us to be, and what he wants us to do!

Come Holy Spirit!

Thank you to everyone who was able to contribute to the Meals on Wheels Christmas gift bags.

Our Middle School Youth Group was able to fill 150 gift bags with a variety of treats and gifts for the recipients of Meals on Wheels. Most of these clients never leave their homes and do not have family in the area. Thank you for sending them Christmas hope and joy. A big thank you to all the youth that helped put these gift bags together. They did such a fantastic job!
