Job Description for Home-Start Family Support Worker

Employer: Home-Start Southern Oxfordshire, 197 Broadway, Didcot, OX11 8RU

Hours of work: Part time: 31 hours per week

Salary: NJC (National Joint Council for Local Authorities) pay scale point 12: £21,589 per annum, pro rata

Contract type: One-year post (with possible extension, dependent on funding)

Responsible to: The Scheme Manager

Purposes of the job

• To contribute to the effective day-to-day operation of the scheme in accordance with the Home-Start Memorandum & Articles of Association, Home-Start Standards & Methods of Practice, Home-Start Agreement and Home-Start Quality Assurance Standards.

• To maintain high standards of practice in supporting families within Home-Start’s ethos.

• To ensure equality of opportunity, fairness and diversity in all aspects of the scheme’s work.

• To implement good safeguarding practice in all areas of work.

Main Responsibilities

Supporting the work of the Home-Start scheme

• Undertake work as delegated by the trustees and Scheme Manager to support the scheme’s strategic management, development and funding.

• Support the implementation and review of all Home-Start policies and procedures.

• Comply with the scheme’s administration, record-keeping, monitoring and financial systems.

• Input data to the Home-Start monitoring and evaluation online system.

• Contribute to the scheme’s Quality Assurance self-assessments and reviews.

• Promote the work, ethos and practice of the scheme. Publicise the Home-Start groups as required.

• Contribute to the development of the Home-Start network locally and nationally.

Supporting families and working in partnership

• Liaise with referrers and other professionals and community groups.

• Evaluate referrals and undertake home assessment visits to determine families’ needs.

• Review support to families at regular intervals, and at the end of Home-Start support.

• Provide electronic, written and verbal reports for other agencies, and for funders.

• Represent the scheme at multi-agency meetings concerning supported families.

• Undertake designated responsibilities to safeguard and promote children’s welfare.

Group work

• Plan and run each group to create a safe, welcoming environment. This includes moving, setting-up and clearing away equipment and seating, and maintaining play equipment in a clean and safe condition.

• Provide appropriate and imaginative play opportunities, encouraging positive interaction between parents and their children.

• Encourage and support attendance and social interaction.

Growing Minds project in Berinsfield

• Develop a plan in order to become familiar with the local area, community and services.

• Develop effective working relationships with partners to ensure successful delivery of the project.

• Work with parents in the home to encourage involvement in their children’s learning, providing emotional and practical support as required for other identified needs.

• Evaluate the project on an on-going basis with the Scheme Manager, to ensure effectiveness and to contribute to evaluation for funders.

The post holder may be required to undertake any other duties that fall within the nature of the role and responsibilities of the post as detailed above.
