Re: August Exam Session 2008

At this time the Ministry wants to determine which independent schools are hosting Grade 10-12 exams in August 2008. Schools are not required to host the August exam session.

To assist independent schools in making their decisions, the following should be considered:

1. Grade 12 exams must be written at the district/independent school level. Grade 12 exams are no longer offered at Post Secondary Institutes across the province.

2. The number of exams offered in August 2008 has been reduced. Grade 12 exams offered are: Biology 12, English 12, Francais langue premiere 12, Chemistry 12, Principles of Math 12, Communications 12 and BC First Nations Studies 12. All Grade 10 and 11 exams will be offered in August.

3. The August 2008 exam session will be a combination of paper and electronic format. Chemistry 12 and Principles of Math 12 are available only in paper-format. English 12, Communications 12, Francais langue premiere 12, Biology 12 and Social Studies 11 will be offered in paper and electronic format.

4. All other August 2008 exams are available electronically only.

5. Grade 10/11 (and BC First Nations Studies 12) exams with open ended components require local marking (e.g., English 10).

6. Exam delivery is by Purolator. This means the Ministry does not control when exams will be delivered to a site. Acceptable delivery sites are district offices or schools.

7. Schools are responsible for deciding if they will offer summer school, rewrites or a combination of the two.

8. For August 2009, the ministry direction will be to provide all exams in electronic format only and offer only those exams required for graduation. No optional exams will be available.

Independent schools are encouraged to convey their decisions to all school staff in an attempt to ensure students are given clear information prior to the end of the school year. If the decision is to host exams, please communicate the need for all students and staff to route questions and registration through the designated contact.

Independent schools are requested to complete the attached questionnaire and return it to the Ministry -
