Greek and Latin Roots and Affixes

Rationale

“People with a good vocabulary do not have special lives; they just have more words to express themselves.” Have you ever needed the perfect comeback but were at a loss for words? We all have wished we could go back in time to say something daring or smart at the perfect time. If you have ever wanted the right words to say in a situation, you need to increase your word power. Many words that you encounter in literature, in class, or on standardized tests (think CRCT and SAT!) have parts that can be easily identified, thus leading you to figure out the rest of the word through context and an educated guess—without having ever seen the words before! After you complete this unit, you will recognize and use decoding skills to determine the meanings of words.

2. Given an audio file of 10 words, the student will write, with correct spelling, the words and give the definition to the words on a 20-point scale.

3. Given examples of words used in context, the GATE student will read and write 5 words (using a prefix, base, and suffix), define them, and then create a sentence where the context points to the definition of the student word on the provided worksheet guide. The grading scale will be on a 5-point scale from an established standard.

4. Given an example of text like the CRCT or SAT, the GATE student will read and accurately select the multiple-choice answers using their decoding skills and context clues on a 100-point scale from an established standard.
