Chinese Inspector J. H. Barbour, who

has been subjected to a charge of Incom-

petency, filed by his stenographer, F. N,

Chase, has been exonerated by Commis

sioner-Gener- al

and Labor. The charges were made last

February, but complete Investigation could

not be made until recently. The letter of

exoneration was received by Mr. Barbour

yesterday. There had been bad blood be

prosecution, was carried on by Charles F.

Lord as attorney. On account of the sus

Seattle Detectives and Highwaymen

SEATTLE, March 28. Two masked

highwaymen engaged In a pitched battle

with Detectives Byrnes and Kennedy this

evening, after holding up three citizens

from whom they got $27. The detectives

ran across the robbers after the latter had

executed the three hoW-up- s.

Attorneys of Hyde and Dimond Ask That They Be Released,

SAN FRANCISCO, March 2S. The pre liminary heaving of E. A. Hyde and Henry Dimond, accused of obtaining Government lands by fraudulent means, was resumed today before United States Commissioner Heacock. The attorneys for the defendants asked tha,t they be discharged on the ground that tha United States had not been defrauded. They alleged that if a fraud had been commit ted, it was against the States of Oregon and California and in that case, the accused men were answerable to tnose states. The indictment was also attacked on other technical grounds.

Struck bt Paluino Sung. While at

work unloading the cargo of the indra-pur- a,

at the Alaska dock at 9 o'clock yes terday morning, Jerry Driscoll, a well

known stevedore, was struck by a falling sling full of block tin and seriously Injured. The Injured man was Immediately taken to St. Vincent's Hospital, where an examination of the Injuries sustained showed the left collarbone and two ribs to have been broken, beside numerous bruises about the body. Owing to Mr. Driscoll's age, he will be Incapacitated for work for at least several months. He was resting easily last night though in some pain.

Teamster Injured bt Engine. While

Li. Algruppa, an Italian teamster, was driving across the track of the Southern Pacific Railway, on Hawthorne avenue and East Water street, at an early hour yesterday morning, his wagon was struck by a locomotive which was backing along the track. The wagon was demolished. the engine was derailed and the man was badly Injured. His right foot was man gled and his head was gashed, and there were many wounds on his body. He was removed In an unconscious condi tion to -- t. Vincent's Hospital, where he received attention from City Physician Zan.

McCully, the United States naval attache to the Russian navy, probably will leave for the lront April L United States Ambassador McCormlck will present them to Foreign Minister Lamsdorff March '30. Captain Judson and Lieutenant McCully have been well received by the authorities and are being shown every courtesy and atten tion by the military and naval staffs.

George Quann, the

son of

John Quann, a rancher living near Kalls- -

pell. was drowned in the Flathead River

this afternoon by the upsetting of a row

boat.

Quann with a companion named Mock

had gone to the river to test a new can

vas boat. In some way the boat was up

set. Mock clung to it and reached the

shore? but Quann sank before assistance

could reach him. His body was recov

ered two hours later.
