Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails Wow it looks like spring the weekend of February 18 & 19 with the amount of visitors to the greater Hazleton Rails to Trails. With that being said, we are all looking forward to getting out on the trail and enjoying the beautiful outdoors surrounding the Greater Hazleton Area. The volunteers of the GHRT do a yeoman's job of keeping the trail in tip top shape all throughout the year, but the spring brings on more work keeping the trail maintained for all to enjoy. The GHACP receives no state, federal, city or township funding to maintain the trail so it's up to the volunteers to keep the trail one of the best liked trails in NEPA. Spring brings on so many chores to recover from the ravages of winter including washouts of the trail surface, cutting back brush to keep the trail open, weed whacking to keep the trail berms open, planting trees and shrubs, maintaining our environmental area, starting new projects and so on. The trail is what it is now because of help from so many local companies, businesses, schools and others volunteering to keep the trail maintained. Here's your chance to help out with your employees along the trail this spring and get your company listed among the others that care for our environment and our free National Recreation Trail. Companies typically schedule 4-6 hour trail maintenance days to help our dedicated volunteers who will guide the work efforts in addition to the GHACP supplying gloves, tools, drinking water, media coverage to help you and your employees enjoy a fun work party that benefits all our area. Please call the GHACP at 570-455-1509 to schedule.

Scholarship Program The GHACP volunteers are again planning on giving out two $6k scholarships to local individuals who will be going for higher education in technical fields and agree to live and work in the Greater Hazleton Area for three years after graduation and hopefully make our area home for the rest of their lives. Please watch your mail. By the time you are reading this you should receive a mailing from us that includes an application and flyer to display at your facility for your employees. If you don't receive this info please contact us.

Zee Medical provided First Aid/CPR/AED & Bloodborne Pathogen training to members in January. This training will be scheduled again in the fall, so anyone who was not able to attend this training, please stay tuned to

our events calendar and email reminders for that date.

Women's Luncheon

Our women's luncheon programs are held bimonthly and are open to all women from throughout Greater Hazleton. Dr. Rachel V. Leskosky, Family Chiropractor at Life Expression Wellness Center, kicked off our luncheon series in January by presenting Chicken Soup & Chiropractic. The event was sponsored by Hawk Mtn Labs and it was held at Bonanza Steakhouse.

Mountain Council of Governments

At its January meeting MCOG had a presentation on LTAP by Christian Goetz. LTAP provides needed training for the public works divisions of local municipalities. Former President and founder of MCOG was given the title of "Member Emeritus" entitling him the opportunity to attend all meetings and functions of MCOG and to act in an advisory capacity if needed. Also for the first time the COG instituted dues for its members. At the February meeting a presentation was made by the autism awareness group SAFE. They detailed their mission and upcoming activities. Also the OSM Vista representative Jessica Wykoff did a presentation making members aware of programs available for abandoned mine land reclamation. The member municipalities voted to hold our annual Spring Fling on April 20th at Sand Springs. This evening meeting is highlighted by presentations from State Government agencies and our State Legislators. It was also decided that MCOG would sponsor a "Law and Order Forum" on May 19th at Lackawanna College Hazleton. MCOG also instituted a "Friends of MCOG" initiative to raise money to further the continued existence of the MCOG. Grants and other sources of funding have diminished in recent years so the MCOG is appealing to businesses in the community to donate funds to help pay for the administration of the COG. "Friends of MCOG" is a way for businesses and individuals in our membership area to contribute to the Mountain Council of Governments in order to enable it to continue its mission of facilitating intergovernmental cooperation in the financially arduous times. All donations are welcome. Please make checks payable to: "Mountain Council of Governments" and send to 20 West Broad Street, Hazleton, PA 18201.
