24th Annual Downtown Holiday Mixer

15th Annual Holiday Tree Decorating Contest Winners Announced

The Chamber's Women's Networking Committee held their 15th Annual Holiday Tree Decorating Contest. 21 businesses participated in the contest and the winners were announced at the annual women's holiday social, which was sponsored by MMI Preparatory School and hosted by The Pines Restaurant & Spirits. Skuba Entertainment provided dj entertainment and m agic m irror photo booth fun for the evening and Billig-Helmes Insurance provided a crystal wine stopper favor to each guest who attended. EMAIL IT TO dguydish@ The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute and the Board of Ambassadors and Associate Board hosted their eighth annual Spirit of Hope Celebration on Friday, November 8th the at Mohegan Sun Pocono in the Keystone Grand Ballroom. This event benefits the Cancer Institute's CommunityBased Cancer Screening Navigation Program. This program helps low income and un/underinsured individuals in northeast Pennsylvania get their recommended colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer screenings. FNCB Bank announced the winner of their "Great She Shed Giveaway" is Hazleton Area based Country Heart Farm. Open to non-profit organizations in the Bank's service area, the FNCB Bank "She Shed" giveaway was held to find a new home for the temporary drive-thru building ? The She Shed ? used during construction of the Bank's new Main Community Office in Dunmore. The $15,000 building features a fully plumbed restroom, heat, air conditioning and is wired for electricity. Country Heart Farm, located at 311 Hanna Street, Sugarloaf, provides comprehensive equine assisted psychotherapy and uniquely formatted hands-on educational programs to children of all ages and abilities. Children who attend programs at Country Heart Farm are most often abused, neglected and/or at risk for failing in the traditional educational settings. Many are high-risk youth from at or below poverty level households. Additionally, Country Heart Farm has a comprehensive therapy program for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Hazle Compounding announced that its compounding pharmacy received accreditation from the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board (PCAB), a service of Accreditation Commission for Health Care (ACHC). This accreditation demonstrates commitment to the highest industry standards for quality and safety. Immanuel Christian School held its Dessert Evening of Hope on November 9th. It was a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the school. There were over 150 in attendance including current and former students, teachers and parents, local churches and donors. Attendees were treated to a program highlighting the impact that ICS has had on the community over the years and how it plans to continue to bless the City of Hazleton in the future. St. Luke's Miners and St. Luke's Sacred Heart campuses' Skilled Nursing Facilities have been named by U.S. News and World Report as "Best Nursing Homes" for short-term rehabilitation care. St. Luke's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center located at the St. Luke's Miners Campus in Coaldale received a short-term rehabilitation rating of High-Performing (4 out of 5) by U.S. News. It has 48 beds. Sacred Heart Hospital Transitional Care Facility in Allentown received an overall rating of 5 out of 5 and has a short-term rehabilitation rating of High Performing. It has 22 beds. Employees from FNCB Bank, recently donated $1,700 and 220 gifts to 17 local families as part of the Bank's "Adopt-A-Family" holiday project. More than 200 FNCB staff members participated this year in Adopt-a-Family, the Bank's signature holiday gift-giving event. The program matches local families in need from the Catherine McAuley Centers of Lackawanna and Luzerne County, Children and Youth Services of Wayne County and Victims Intervention Program in Honesdale with those wishing to donate.

Community Reading Day

Community Reading Day was held in late November. More than 2,000 students were treated to a story by business and community volunteers. More than 70 volunteers read to over 80 classes in the Greater Hazleton School District, Holy Family Academy, and Head Start classrooms. Highmark Blue Cross sponsored the event. JLHLearns About the Importance of Community Service

Pictured Yesenia Tufino and Karen Pujols, among other JLH students, took a short break from the November 11th session activities. Students learned about the Importance of Community Service and how they can be active participants. Speakers included Pat Ward, President and CEO, United Way of Greater Hazleton, who explained the United Way and its member agencies; Bob Curry, Founding President, Hazleton One Community Center, provided the class with the history and a tour of the Community Center; and Krista Schneider, Executive Director of the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress brought the students up to speed on the role of the Alliance and of the status of the projects underway and planned for downtown Hazleton.

JLH Provides Thanksgiving Fun for Helping Hands Children

Students from the Junior Leadership Hazleton Class held a Thanksgiving Party at The Helping Hands Society in Hazleton. The JLH project team played games, helped with seasonal crafts, provided snacks and read to the children about Thanksgiving. The children were given books donated by the Weatherly PTA.
