PASSAGE 1

Do you have a cat as a pet? Even if you don’t, you are probably familiar with the habits and appearance of the domestic cat. The cats which are kept as pets are related to tigers, lions and leopards.

All members of the cat family have padded paws, which enable them to move quietly. They all have claws, which can be extended for grabbing onto rough surfaces and for catching and holding their prey. Their claws also can be retracted, or pulled in, for silent walking.

Domestic cats, as well as their larger relatives, also have keen senses which are important to their success as hunters. Cats are noted for their ability to see in very dim light. This ability enables them to hunt at night.

PASSAGE 2

Sunday is a family day for the Lee family. They often go out together. Last Sunday Mr. Lee decided to take his family up to Victoria Peak.

“We are taking a ride on the Peak Tram today. It is one of the oldest forms of public transport in Hong Kong. It has been operating since 1888. It’s older than the bus and the train, though not the rickshaw,” Mr. Lee explained.

The family first went to tea at Maxim’s. The dim sum was delicious. They had fried noodles, barbecued pork buns, spring rolls and shrimp dumplings.

They then crossed the harbour by the Mass Transit Railway and got out at Central MTR station.

“Oh, Daddy, look how beautiful that bus is!” Sally exclaimed.

She was pointing at an open-top double decker bus. There were brightly-painted figures on both sides of it. The figures all leaned forward as though they were already on the Peak Tram. The bus took them to the Garden Road terminal.

“What a long queue!” Jacky said.

The family queued up for about fifteen minutes until their turn came. Jacky eagerly got on the tram and took a seat by the window. When the tram was filled up, it started off and slowly climbed up the steep hill. The buildings and ships got smaller and smaller.

“We’re nearly four hundred meters above sea level. The buildings look like matchboxes and the ships look like toys, don’t they?” Mr. Lee asked the children.

It was a fine clear day and so everyone was able to look across the deep blue harbour to the outlying islands. Charles recognized Cheung Chau and Lantau.

Then they spent the whole afternoon walking around the Peak and admired the beautiful views. Mr. Lee took many photographs of his family. They had dinner at the Peak Restaurant. Then they returned home with happy memories of the day.

In most animals, dental decay is a rare problem. In man, and especially in the affluent West, the disease has reached epidemic proportions.

The cause of tooth decay in human beings is a bacterium that feeds on the sugar in our food. It digests the sugar more easily by converting it into an acid.
