Students explore biological concepts through an inquiry approach. Embedded standards for Inquiry, Technology & Engineering, and Mathematics are taught in the context of the content standards for Cells, Interdependence, Flow of Matter and Energy, Heredity, and Biodiversity and Change.Grading: Each quarter grade will consist of 25% Tests, 15% Quizzes, 35 % Classwork, 25% Homework.Laboratories--labs are a critical part of the learning process. All labs will require lab reports. Emphasis will be placed on safety and participation.Science Fair Project:Optional for biology students, this project will be assigned in August with a final due date of October 30, 2012. In an effort to encourage individual science investigations, biology students interested in participating will be given the incredible option of using this project grade as their 2nd Quarter test average (25% of grade). 4455160141605Wish list:Ream of copy paperHand SanitizerPaper towelTissue BoxOffice Depot/Max Gift CardHeavy Duty Pencil Sharpener**If sending in donations valued over $10, please send receipt and I will gladly submit it to treasurer’s office for credit towards parent volunteer hours.00Wish list:Ream of copy paperHand SanitizerPaper towelTissue BoxOffice Depot/Max Gift CardHeavy Duty Pencil Sharpener**If sending in donations valued over $10, please send receipt and I will gladly submit it to treasurer’s office for credit towards parent volunteer hours.Supplies: $15 Lab Fee Composition Book (lab journal) 3-subject spiral notebookSelf-stick divider tabs (optional)1” Binder (sharing with other subjects allowed)Small pack of graph paperColored Pencils (will be stored in classroom)Small pencil sharpener (will be stored in classroom)Glue sticksHighlighterPencils (no pens) Classwork/HomeworkAssignments completed at home are essential to your understanding of the course content. You will be expected to make up missed tests in class the day you return to school.? No excuses. If you are absent the day of a review for the test you are still expected to take the test the day you return to school; again check the syllabus! You must keep up! If in doubt about an assignment…email me (Irodriguezmena@).Missed labs will not be made up; Excused absences will make up those lab grades with an alternate assignment; Unexcused absences will receive an F for all grades given for that day.Classroom Expectations: Students are expected to be in their seat and ready when the bell rings. Materials (notebooks, pencil, paper, etc.) must be brought to class each day. The laboratory or room must be clean at the end of the period before leaving. Treat everyone with respect. All school rules will be followed as stated in the student handbook. All safety rules as stated in the Flinn Science Safety Agreement must be followed. You must sign and return in order to participate in labs. Keys for Success in Biology Have a positive attitude! I am here to help you succeed, so feel free to ask me for help. I am available every day after school. Ask questions. If you are unclear about something from the textbook, lab, or from discussion, ASK! Make sure that you understand how the lecture, homework, and labs interrelate. Labs and homework are designed to reinforce significant ideas from the lesson. Make sure that you see these connections. Start studying for tests early. By studying and reviewing each night you are not only helping to prepare for the test, you are also more prepared for class each day and any quizzes that may be given.
